Abstract

The level of thermal comfort is influenced by climate factors and human factors and perceptions of space, changes to space will affect the level of comfort of the space. This study aims to determine the level of thermal comfort of the space in Bale Paon and Bale Dangin in traditional houses in Penglipuran Village. This article discusses the influence of space design on the level of thermal comfort in traditional houses in Penglipuran Village, Bangli, especially in the Bale Paon and Bale Dangin buildings. This study uses a quantitative method with data analysis using Building Performance Simulation using software. The results are in the form of thermal performance modeling and parameters that affect the comfort of space in traditional houses in Penglipuran Village. Factors that affect the thermal conditions of space include the layout and orientation of the building mass, the shelter and building envelope around the building mass, and building materials that form the walls, floors and roofs.

Abstract

Character Building of Streetscape through Buildings, Pedestrians and Public Art in the R.E. Martadinata Corridor, SurakartaA visual study of the streetscape character of Jalan R.E. Martadinata examines how this main commercial corridor in the Pasar Gede Surakarta area shapes spatial experience through its visual elements. Using a qualitative case study approach, the analysis focused on buildings, roads, sidewalks, urban elements, and public art. Results show the corridor's visual character is formed by the continuity of two-story shop house facades, where approximately 50–55% of second-floor facades retain their original form, creating strong visual rhythm. Conversely, ground floors have undergone intensive commercial modifications, producing heterogeneous visual variations. Sidewalks function as active visual spaces, particularly after the 2012 revitalization introducing 12 Chinese zodiac motifs and Javanese roof symbols. Public art—including lanterns, coin ornaments, and festival decorations—serves as marker elements reinforcing area identity. Overall, the streetscape's visual character results from interactions between tradition, modernization, and cultural expression.

Abstract

Cultural Heritage Regulations and Urban Transformation Sectoral Morphology in Bandung's Asian-African Colonial DistrictThe Asia-Africa district of Bandung must reconcile colonialism and modernity. The 2009–2025 cultural identity conservation measures of Bandung are criticized in worldwide urban heritage disputes. Qualitative-descriptive methods included field observations, photography, historical colonial maps, and morphological analysis using Homer Hoyt's sectoral model and Lefebvre's spatial theory Alun-Alun to inclusive social space sectoral growth is shown by layered maps (1826–1987). Results indicate regulatory movement from conservative to integrative, UNESCO Historic Urban Landscape compliance, legal consistency, and community participation difficulties. The Bandung urban heritage lab supports identity-driven, sustainable city development.

Abstract

Houses often develop to fulfill the biological, psychological, social, and economic needs of families, and even function as production and business spaces. Houses owned by roof tile entrepreneurs in Wirun Village, Mojolaban, Sukoharjo, show diverse spatial patterns as a result of the combination of residential and business activities. This research aims to identify the influence of residential and business processes on the spatial arrangement of houses. The research used a qualitative descriptive method through field observation and interviews with categorization. The results showed that the spatial arrangement of roof tile entrepreneurs' houses prioritizes the production process. Most of the house area is used for business, especially roof tile production activities. The building facade is designed to support the loading and unloading process. The circulation pattern is mainly determined by the needs of roof tile production. Therefore, the spatial arrangement is more business-oriented, reflecting the integration between residential space and economic activities in the house.

Abstract

Strategies for Enhancing Visual Accents through Luminance Contrast Control in Semi-Outdoor Galleries Lighting is a key element in shaping the visual perception of a gallery. In the semi-outdoor gallery of Kampung Susun Kunir, daylight dominates during the daytime, while artificial lighting is not yet optimal and fails to create visual accents due to limitations in luminaire positioning on the exposed ceiling. This study aims to formulate strategies for enhancing visual accents through luminance contrast control. Simulations using DIALux were conducted to analyze luminance values and ratios, both in surrounding walls (immediate) and vertical surfaces (ambience). The results show that artificial lighting is ineffective during the day; however, interventions in the form of additional spotlights and linear spotlights at night successfully increased visual contrast across display surfaces. These findings underscore the importance of adjusting lighting to spatial conditions and serve as a foundation for developing efficient and adaptive lighting guidelines for community exhibition spaces to support artwork legibility and improve visitors’ visual experience.

Abstract

Stigmergy as a Time-Based Architectural Design Transformation StrategyThis article explains that conventional architecture still tends to see buildings as static objects, so changes after occupation are often treated merely as operational effects rather than as part of design strategy. This view limits the understanding of architecture as a system that continuously develops through interactions among users, materials, activities, and the environment. The study proposes a conceptual model by synthesizing the agent–medium–trace relationship, identifying five stigmergy systems in spatial contexts, and reformulating the link between system mechanisms and phases of temporal transformation. The results reveal four phases of spatial transformation—Activation, Intensification, Structural Shift, and Reconfiguration—which operate through five systems: controlling, guiding, protecting, direction, and zoning. The article’s main contribution is the Strategic Temporal Transformation Matrix, which positions time as a strategic framework for understanding design transformation and supporting adaptive spatial and environmental systems that evolve gradually over time.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of architecture through a semiotic approach, analyzing architectural elements such as façades, ornaments, spatial arrangements, and materials as signs that communicate messages to society. The goal of this research is to explore the relationship between the physical elements of a building (signifiers) and the meanings they convey (signified) within cultural and social contexts. The methodology involves a literature review focused on interpreting symbols, forms, spaces, and materials in architectural design. The results show that architectural meaning is shaped by cultural and social contexts, with design elements reflecting identity, function, and values accepted by users. This research highlights the role of architecture as a dynamic medium of communication, offering new insights into how architectural meanings are constructed and interpreted through the signs embedded in design elements. It broadens the understanding of architecture not only as a physical structure but also as a cultural and ideological expression.

Abstract

The study of the stove as part or element of a vernacular architecture in the literature is more widely discussed regarding cultural aspects and practical uses. This study aims to examine to what extent considerations of micro-climate and building physics are applied by the indigenous people of Kampung Naga in the configuration of the cooking stove in their houses. We select a simulation research design as the primary method of analysis. We use the Ansys Student 2025 R1 version to conduct 2D Fluent flow and 2D heat transfer simulations. The findings confirmed that the traditional stove of the Kampung Naga community which consists of Hawu and Parako reflects a genius design consideration by the local people which shows its capability to control the buoyancy-driven natural convection and heat distribution in the two burners of the stove as well as preventing the heat from affecting the surrounding wooden and bamboo materials.

Abstract

Accurate spatial documentation is essential for rural settlement planning, particularly in hilly areas where conventional field surveys are time‑consuming and often lack detailed topographic information. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) mapping in improving spatial data accuracy and survey efficiency for settlement planning. The research was conducted in Puspo Hamlet, Purworejo, a rural settlement located in a complex hilly landscape with slopes of 15–35°. An exploratory case study approach based on spatial analysis was applied, integrating UAV aerial surveys, field observations, and photogrammetric processing using Structure‑from‑Motion techniques. The UAV survey covered approximately 35 hectares and produced high‑resolution orthophotos with a ground sampling distance of 3–5 cm/pixel as well as DEM and DSM datasets with horizontal accuracy of ±10 cm and vertical accuracy of ±15 cm. The results show that UAV mapping provides highly detailed spatial information while reducing survey time to about two days compared with more than one week using conventional survey methods.

Abstract

Cooling, lighting, and noise are crucial aspects that must be considered for building comfort, significantly influenced by the performance of design elements. As a primary solution before resorting to mechanical systems, passive design elements, such as windows, ventilation, building form, and orientation should be utilized optimally. However, some mosques indicate a decline in the use of these elements, particularly in cooling and natural lighting. This study analyzed the effectiveness of passive design in mosques in Banda Aceh. The case study of 10 mosque buildings reveals that passive design elements fail to meet cooling needs, leading to a high dependence on mechanical systems such as air conditioning (AC). The natural lighting (daylighting) functions effectively due to the implementation of side lighting and top lighting systems, while noise management is also optimal through strategies such as managing the source, using barriers, and proper zoning. The study concluded that passive design optimization in mosques needs to be carried out, especially in terms of cooling.
