Abstract

Abstract. The aim of this study is to compare the grammatical functions contained in Yun Dong Ju's poem entitled 길 (Gil/The Road) in the book Puisi untuk Rakyat Indonesia (Poetry for Indonesian People) translated by Chung Young Rim. The data were analyzed based on the syntactic structure in the source language, which is Korean, and its translation into the target language, which is Indonesian, to implement the study of syntactic theory and its application in the field of comparative literary translation. The method of this research was descriptive contrastive qualitative. Meanwhile, the data collection techniques were observing and taking notes. First of all, the researchers explained the grammatical functions contained in the poem both in Korean and Indonesian, and then compared the syntactic function data. The results of the study on Yun Dong Ju’s poem entitled (Gil/ The Road) that focused on the comparison between the grammatical functions in the source language and those in the target language showed that there are 4 times occurrence of the addition of subjects and 1 time occurrence of the addition of adjunct in the target language; 5 changes in grammatical functions, 4 deletions of grammatical functions in the target language, and 2 diction differences in grammatical functions. Furthermore, there are 2 data that show no changes in in its grammatical functions. The changes in the syntactic structure found in Yun Dong Ju’s poem entitled길 (Gil/The Road) occurred to avoid ambiguity in conveying meaning since in Indonesian, clear subjects and adjuncts are needed. Abstract

Abstract. Learners’ perception plays an important role in evaluating the teaching and learning process and has an impact to the teacher’s performance during the teaching and learning process. Applying descriptive qualitative method with case study design, this study highlighted the learners’ perceptions and their preference of oral corrective feedback utilized by the teachers during the teaching and learning process. By using purposive sampling, this research involved one teacher and two learners as research participants at an English course called Amsterdam Institute located in Makassar. The data, collected through semi-structured interview and observation, resulted that the learners found themselves facilitated in responding the teacher’s utterances since the teacher’s oral corrective feedback were helpful to lead the learners’ accuracy or just to help them acknowledge their errors in terms of grammar, lexis, the use of L1, and particularly in phonology (pronunciation). Furthermore, inconsistencies between the students’ preference and the teacher’s feedback use in terms of the time to provide oral corrective feedback are identified.  Students preferred being given time to work out their error, while teacher mostly gave feedback directly. Thus, it can be concluded that giving more time for students to provide self-repair can be a way for students to make sense of error they committed. The results further highlight a significant impact for teachers’ beliefs on their corrective feedback practices, especially for those teaching using a tailor-made system. Abstract

Abstract.  This study intends to examine the role of Arabic in comprehending Islamic law. This research was conducted to provide an overview of Arabic for observers of Islamic law, focusing on the elements of nahwu, shorof, balaghah, and mantiq. This is because the Quran and Hadith, the primary sources of Islamic law, are written in Arabic. This research was a literature study using the descriptive analysis method to examine the importance of mastering Arabic in the study of Islamic law. Sources of research data were obtained from various references that include books, journals, and other references related to the research theme. The result showed that Arabic is essential for comprehending the Al-Quran and Hadith as the primary sources of Islamic law. The Arabic language used by the Qur'an was much higher than the Arabic language that developed in the community. In Arab society during the Jahiliyah era, the Arabic language had reached its qimmah (glory) and was mature in terms of its grammar, vocabularies, uslub (language style), and balaghah. Al-Qur'an and hadith cannot be separated from Arabic, hence the accuracy with which both are read and comprehended will determine whether or not Islamic law is established.Keywords: Arabic, Al-Qur’an, Islamic Law, Spirit of Islam

Abstract

Abstract. Genre as a spectrum of textual manifestation signals its textual presence through linguistic devices. In the tourism text, the signal of its presence is marked by a transition from one movement or organizing activity to another. Translating genre is central to the work of translators. The fact is the translation process often does not take one line and translators often overlook the role of contextual specifications. This difficulty is also compounded by the fact that the readers’ understanding when reading the translation text often has difficulty in obtaining the meaning. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify and explain the translation of an Indonesian-English tourism text genre focusing on message segments to determine the moves and rhetorical functions of the discourse structure and how they may contribute to the readability of the text. The study was descriptive qualitative research. The data was extracted from a variety of documents related to Madura tourism. The data collection technique was document review and the data analysis was interactive model analysis. The results of the study showed that the message segments of the Indonesian-English tourism text translation were constructed with three moves (explanation, illustration, and argumentation) and three rhetorical functions (description, definition, and cause and effect). These moves and rhetorical functions in the translation of the Indonesian-English tourism text genre contributed to the results of the readability of the translated texts, i.e., they were fully comprehensible without unnecessary effort in the part of the readers. The findings suggest that genre analysis of the message segments of the tourism text translation can be a good alternative for communicating the intentions of the source texts.  Thus, this can be a good practice for translators to consider when translating texts and other related texts as well.Keywords: Genre, Message Segment, Translation, Tourism

Abstract

Abstract. The perspective formed by the mother tongue frequently influences the vocabulary used in speaking and writing while learning a new language. To make identifying and selecting the appropriate vocabulary according to the terminology commonly used by native speakers in the nursing field easier, Mandarin learners, notably those studying nursing, need vocabulary references that are organised systematically based on vocabulary domains. This study aims to serve as a resource for the processes in learning to increase overall proficiency in Mandarin for nursing. A Thesaurus of Modern Chinese (TMC) contains the lexical-semantic structure of Mandarin. Therefore, Chinese learners can learn the syntactic language that native Chinese speakers regularly use. This study examines the scope of vocabulary case studies in nursing from this thesaurus. The research strategy looks for relevant terminology in the nursing sector. This study also investigates the value of knowing Chinese to help nursing careers and the exposure to learning Mandarin in the nursing industry by related vocabulary. Abstract

Abstract. Written corrective feedback (WCF) is believed to be one of the essential factors in the improvement of students' academic writing in English as Foreign Language (EFL) context. WCF is crucial for EFL students as they may face both language barriers and problems related to academic requirements during the process of writing. Hence, EFL students tend to have more challenges than L1 students, especially in making pieces of academic writing. This current research aims to find out the criteria of effective WCF that help EFL students on their academic writing. This current research employed qualitative approach. The current research isa descriptive qualitative research design. It employed interview as a data collection method. Interview guidelines were used as the instrument of data collection. Participants of the study are four students in an English Education Department in a private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The participants experienced the process of writing a research report as the fulfillment of getting an undergraduate degree. The research found that criteria of effective WCF i.e. WCF should be understandable, focused, and direct. These findings imply that teachers should consider how to give WCF to the students. The criteria of effective WCF found in the current study could be reference and guideline by the teacher about what kind of WCF that help students better in their academic writing. Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to analyze the students’ language learning strategies (henceforth LLSs) in online CLIL-oriented classroom and to explore the students’ suggestions toward their online learning in relation to their LLSs. Through a mixed-method, this research involved nineteen students who were enrolled in the psychology department's "International Class" at an Indonesian private university. Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire was distributed followed by conducting semi-structured interview. The finding revealed that all of the participants utilized all of LLSs such as memory strategies, cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies. Cognitive and metacognitive strategies were considered as the most dominant strategies used during online learning, while affective and social strategies were the least preferable strategies. Based on the student’ response, this might be due to the fact that students are fully responsible for managing the overall learning process and evaluating their learning more frequently to achieve the learning goals, including content knowledge and academic language learning, when using online learning modes, either synchronous or asynchronous, Thus, some suggestions were addressed in terms of lecturers’ scaffolding, structured pre-class activities and collaborative learning. In conclusion, the students adopted high cognitive and metacognitive strategies followed by compensation strategies and other strategies such as social, memory and affective strategies respectively. Yet,CLIL teachers were also suggested to provide online learning activities which also facilitate social strategies as it was deemed by students to have more active participation in online classes. This provides some insight and pedagogical suggestions how EFL teachers or content teachers to facilitate their students to have more effective learning process based on their learning strategies.Keywords: Language Learning Strategies; Online CLIL classroom; Students’ voices

Abstract

Abstract. Culture-specific item or CSIs are languages unique features which differentiate a language to another. The Javanese language and English are two languages which has a big gap in the lexical, social, and cultural. In producing the translation from Javanese to English and vice versa, the translator must consider a lot of things mainly the CSIs feature of the text to avoid a misleading information. The equivalence of SL to TL must met so that the audience get the exact information that the writer in SL wants to employ. This study aims to analyze the cultural loss and gain in some words related to the words in ST and TT in order to see the significance of those words to each of the language. The language used in this movie is Javanese language with English subtitle. This study applied descriptive qualitative research methodology which does not use any numerical data counting. Documentation, transcription, and note-taking are used to collect the data. This study used Aixelá’s term of CSIs and applied Newmark’s categorization of CSIs. Five categories are found in the data of the study which has ecology with geographical features, material cultures with time, social culture with addressing term, social norm, social activity and religious term, organization with political term, and gestures and habit with interjection and politeness manner. The loss and gain in the translation is bound to happen, to cope with the loss and gain, reduction, addition, generalization, compensation, and deletion is used by the translator. Keywords: Culture-Specific Items, Tilik, Loss, Gain, Translation

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of the present study was to explore the phrase that functions as an adjunct in the articles which are written in two version of the language: English and Bahasa Indonesia. Therefore, it can be seen in the deep structure of the article whether the translations are kept to use the same structure from the English or to use another one in the Indonesian translation. This will reveal the strategy that the translator uses in translating the articles. News Articles from www.bbc.com were taken as the data of the present study. In gaining the data, purposive sampling technique was used. This technique was to find out more comprehensive data. There are twenty-two data studied in this study which comprises eleven English and Indonesian text in equal. The data were the same articles that were written in English and their translations, in Bahasa Indonesia. Results of the present study show that, first, there were different variations of constituent constructing the phrase when written in both languages. Second, two different constituents can create a new phrase in which there is no such a head representing the phrase. Third, a preposition in Bahasa Indonesia can precedes the adjectives.Keywords: English, Indonesian, Adjunct, News Portal

Abstract

Abstract. This study compares and evaluates three alternative theoretical models of the relevant writing relationships. The reading dimensions of this model include components of understanding of places and parts. Dimensions include components of spelling, vocabulary, word structure, and story structure. These models differ with respect to the order in which the dimensions of reading and writing are related. The interactive model allows the use of reading knowledge in writing, and vice versa. Other models (read-to-write; write-to-read) only allow knowledge to move in one direction. These models are evaluated based on the model. The ability to explain the relationships found in the extensive corpus of reading and collecting data from 256 second graders and 251 fourth graders. The interactive model fits the data better than the read-to-write model at the second grade level and the write-to-read model at both grade levels and the read-to-write model are superior to the write-to-write model.  Specific relationships are examined and pedagogical implications.Keywords: Analysis, Model Comparison, Reading, Writing.
