Abstract

This research discussed the issues of discrimination occurred toward the black female characters in The Hidden Figures movie. It aimed to describe the types of discrimination and to explain the impacts toward the black female characters. The researcher used the qualitative research as the method and feminist literary criticism as the approach of this research. The data derived from narrations and dialogues in the movie script related to the research questions. The findings of this research showed that there were two types of discrimination portrayed in the movie; those are derogation and denial. The findings also showed that the impacts of discrimination toward black female characters emerged in psychological and economic fields.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang interpretasi makna tanda pemali dalam masyarakat etnik Jawa yang berdomisili di Samarinda. Adapun tujuan dari penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui pemali apa yang diketahui serta dilaksanakan oleh masyarakat etnik Jawa dan makna tanda yang tekandung dalam pemali yang dilaksankan oleh masyarakat etnik Jawa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian lapangan serta menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif denga metode deskriptif. Data penelitian ini berupa pemali yang didapatkan melalui informan yang mengetahui tentang budaya pemali dan masih melaksanakannya. Selanjutnya, data dikumpulkan dengan metode wawancara, rekam, dan catat. Kemudian, dianalisis dengan teknik reduksi data, transkip data, dan penyajian data. Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan makna tanda pada setiap pemali dengan menggunakan teori semiotika teori kebohongan (The Theory Of Lie) milik Umberto Eco yang dapat dilihat dari dan makna konotatif /metafora (tanda mengelabui atau membohongi) adalah bentuk akibat yang akan menjadi tanda pemaknaan tingkat dua dan makna denotatif atau makna nyata (sebenarnya) yang sesuai kamus adalah pemaknaan tingkat satu, sehingga dari pemali tersebut akan diketahui tanda mana yang mengelabui (konotatif) serta makna sebenarnya (denotatif) pada pemali masyarakat etnik Jawa. Dalam penelitian ini didapatkan 103 pemali yang diketahui dan 30 pemali yang dilaksanakan.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types and the purposes of conversational implicature uttered by all characters in In The Heart of The Sea movie by using pragmatics approach. The design of this research is qualitative research employing content analysis approach that focused on textual investigation. The data of this research is utterances, which contains conversational implicature spoken by the characters in that movie. This research has one data source which is the movie script of In The Heart of The Sea movie. The data of this research are categorized as types of conversational implicature are analyzed based on Grice’s theory (1975) and the purposes of conversational implicature used theory by Brown and Levinson (1978). The result of this research shows that two types of conversational implicature are found in the utterances of the characters in that movie, they are particularized conversational implicature and generalized conversational implicature. Five purposes of conversational implicature also found in this research, they are to protect speaker itself, to show power and politeness, to give information, to entertain the audiences (humorous) and to have lack specific information.

Abstract

Penelitian ini fokus pada analisis kepribadian tokoh utama dalam novel Posesif karya Lucia Priandarini (2017) dengan menggunakan pendekatan psikologi sastra. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian studi pustaka dengan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif yaitu mendeskripsikan suatu bentuk data yang berupa kata-kata yang terdapat dalam novel. Teknik pengumpulan data ialah teknik baca dan catat serta teknik analisis yang terdiri dari reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Penelitian ini menggunakan  teori fakta cerita Robert Santon (alur, tokoh dan penokohan, latar), psikologi sastra (psikoanalisis Sigmund Freud) dan tipe kepribadian Hippocrates-Galenus. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan alur pada novel adalah alur maju. Tokoh utama bernama Lala Anindita, selain itu penggambaran latar dalam novel secara garis besar berada di kota Jakarta. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, tokoh Lala di kategorikan ke dalam tipe kepribadian koleris karena sikap maupun sifat yang dimiliki Lala termasuk ke dalam ciri-ciri dari kepribadian koleris. Selain itu, terdapat empat dorongan id, ego dan superego yang ada dalam diri Lala. Dorongan id Lala mampu terpenuhi oleh respon ego atas dasar pertimbangan respon superego. Id di tunjukkan ketika Lala memiliki obsesi untuk menang kompetisi, ingin bebas atau lepas dari represi sang Ayah, obsesi untuk mewujudkan cita-citanya dan obsesi untuk mendapatkan cinta. Respon ego di tandai ketika Lala dapat memenangkan kompetisi, kenyataan bahwa ia harus menuruti keinginan ayahnya, dapat mewujudkan cita-citanya serta mendapatkan cinta dari pria bernama Yudhis. Respon superego ditandai ketika Lala berjuang untuk memenangkan kompetisi, mempertimbangkan keinginan untuk lepas dari represi sang Ayah, mempertimbangkan jalan yang dilakukan untuk mewujudkan cita-citanya serta menjadikan Yudhis kekasihnya untuk mendapatkan cinta.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan secara sistematis makna denotasi dan konotasi dalam tuturan pernikahan adat Kutai dengan menggunakan teori semiotika Roland Barthes. Objek penelitian difokuskan pada permasalahan yang berkaitan dalam menyampaikan pesan-pesan mengenai nilai budaya yang tercermin di setiap prosesi pernikahan dalam tradisi masyarakat Kutai. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh dengan wawancara langsung ke masyarakat Kutai yang memahami tuturan dalam pernikahan Adat Kutai. Merekam suara narasumber sebagai data dan mencatat segala hal yang perlu dicatat. Selanjutnya diperkuat dengan studi pustaka yakni dengan arsip perpustakaan daerah Kota Samarinda. Berdasarkan hasil pembahasan, menyimpulkan bahwa: 1). Makna denotasi pada prosesi pernikahan adat Kutai memiliki beberapa tuturan yakni Meminang, Kebun belukar, Nyorong tanda, Uang sumahan, Bepacar, Bealis, Naik Pengantin, Naik mentuha. Proses yang dilakukan untuk melamar seorang gadis kemudian menyerahkan seserahan baik berupa benda maupun uang. Tradisi ini dilakukan sebagai syarat dalam proses pernikahan adat Kutai. 2). Makna konotasi pada tuturan prosesi adat pernikahan Kutai yakni Meminang, kata kebun belukar yang dilambangkan sebagai seorang anak gadis yang akan diikat oleh laki-laki untuk dipersunting. Nyorong tanda, seserahan berupa benda agar terjaganya rahasia rumah tangga yang selalu sejalan mengarungi kehidupan berumah tangga. Bepacar, menandakan agar terhindarnya dari bencana serta aura mempelai wanita makin bercahaya. Bealis, menandakan agar mempelai wanita terlihat manis dan cantik. Naik pengantin, melambangkan kesulitan dan kebahagian di dalam rumah tangga serta mendapatkan hal-hal baik dikehidupan. Naik mentuha, sebuah kesiapan sang mempelai dalam melepaskan diri untuk mengarungi bahtera rumah tangga.

Abstract

Gaya bahasa digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan maksud dan tujuan yang ingin disampaikan oleh pengarang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan gaya bahasa yang terdapat pada lirik lagu dalam album Ruang Tunggu karya Mohammad Istiqamah Djamad. Lirik lagu merupakan karya tulis yang berisi kata-kata indah dalam setiap baitnya, lirik lagu yang menjadi daya tarik berupa permainan kata makna dan gaya bahasa. Permainan kata seperti gaya bahasa dan makna dengan tujuan untuk memperkuat nada yang disesuaikan dengan lirik lagu sehingga pendengar semakin terbawa dalam suasana irama lagu.

Abstract

This study discussed about the phenomena in the society which human shown their existence and adapted on literary work. This study used Hermann Hesse’s work entitled Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair’s Youth Novel. This study used Satre’s existentialism study on the ideas of finding the characteristic of Satre’s existentialism in hesse’s works. This study also used Gill and Kenan’s explanation to get through understanding of the main character acts, narrations, dialogs on the research itself. This study aims to examine the characteristic of Sartre’s existentialism in the novel and how the representation of existentialism in the main character. The researcher used qualitative-phenomenology theory to describe human experiences in a certain phenomenon. The results of this research that, there are three conception of Sartre’s existentialism found in main character, Emil Sinclair which is Abandoned by God, Despair and Anguish. Also the researcher concluded that the main character became atheist in the end of the story which he did not choose the two world represent of religion path and the rebellion path. He wants to lives among the society peacefully full of conscious and consideration.

Abstract

It is started since the canonical story of Adam and Eve, individuals are labeled right after their birth as, “it’s a girl” or “it’s a boy”. This binary system of women (girl) and men (boy) continues to have a default setting that women should align with her gender that is feminine, while men should be masculine. The presumption of the default alignments also intersects to the expectation of individual’s sexuality, that is, heterosexual. The situation then dichotomizes people’s normality. This process is called social construction of gender which was asserted by Judith Butler. This research analyzed gender construction in The School for Good and Evil novel by Chainani using Judit Butler’s Gender Performativity theory. There were two discussions taken in the research. First is the identification of social construction in the novel. Second is the identification of how the two main  female characters perform their gender despite the social construction of gender inscribed to them. The research used qualitative method. The researcher used a close reading process to do the data collection technique. The result of this research reveals that the social construction of gender in the novel were surrounded all aspects of human life. The society constructed body features, appearance, roles, traits, sexuality, and punishment based on individuals’ gender category. It is also found that the two main female characters were gender fluid that at certain stages they were conforming to the construction but also negating the construction.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out all utterances by the main characters Margaret Tate and Andrew Paxton that contains implicature and its context in The Proposal movie. This research was categorized as qualitative research and used content analysis approach. The researcher used The Proposal (2006) movie as the source of data. The data were taken from the utterances between the main characters Margaret Tate and Andrew Paxton that contained implicature based on implicature theory by Grice and its context used context theory by Hymes. The findings reveal that the researcher got 23 data of conversational implicature and 14 data of conventional implicature. 15 data from 23 data of conversational implicature are done by Andrew. From the data that the researcher found, component of the context that prominent between Andrew and Margaret was participants. From 15 data of conversational implicature done by Andrew, the contexts of participant are vertical dimension. Vertical dimension is a component that relates to social factors such as age or social status. The seven data of this research were vertical dimension of social status between Margaret as a boss and Andrew as her assistant. Then, the other eight data were social status of both of Margaret and Andrew as a fake lover. The context of participant in this research became the benchmark for the researcher to find the implied meaning.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the classes struggle conducted by the five main characters of Alita: Battle Angel film (Dr. Ido, Alita, Dr. Chiren, Hugo, and Nova) by using two theories of Tyson about social class and class struggle. The form of research design was qualitative with content analysis as its approach. Words in the forms of narrations and dialogues were the data of this research and taken from Alita: Battle Angel film script. The findings of this research showed three different social classes identified from the five main characters. (1) Dr. Ido, Alita, and Dr. Chiren were identified to come from the middle class. (2) Hugo was identified from the low class. (3) Nova was identified as the one from the upper class. Furthermore, the forms of class struggled conducted by each character was different. Yet, this finding did not apply to Dr. Ido character since he did not conduct any form of class struggle due to his desire of wanting to live in Iron City only. On one hand, for Alita, Dr. Chiren, and Hugo posed one similar strong reason of conducting their class struggle which was that to change their life condition into the better ones by living in Zalem. On the other hand, Nova’s reason of conducting his class struggle because he wanted to defend the status quo as the highest leader of Zalem.
