Abstract

Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory has gained significant popularity since its launch around 40 years ago. Many cross-cultural literatures rested on this theory. However, along with the development of social research, this theory has been a target for criticisms about its methodology, nature, size, inconsistency, and outdated data. Therefore, this study aims to test the consistency of the cultural dimension’s theory, especially Hofstede’s national culture score. Quantitative content analysis was employed in 600 contents posted on Facebook accounts of several universities in Australia and Indonesia to see the polarization of the cultural dimensions, which were compared with Hofstede’s score. The Mann-Whitney U-test was also carried out to see the significance of polarization in each dimension. The results of this study confirmed the inconsistency of Hofstede’s cultural dimension score in one of six main findings. The implications of the findings are also discussed in relation to several criticisms of this theory.

Abstract

The SARA (Ethnic, Religion, Race, and Intergroup) hoax is one of the disquieting hoaxes as it has the potential to cause conflict. Some Indonesians might not know that the SARA information they get is factual or hoaxes, which can lead to prejudice. Conflict in Tanjung Balai and Depok shows that exposure to SARA hoaxes can affect individual behavior. This study aims to describe individual experiences in interacting with SARA information and performing conflict management. This study uses phenomenological methods and in-depth interview instruments, allowing researchers to interact with the world of the informants’ conscious experiences. The results indicate that the informants access various information related to the main activities. The internet has become the preferred media gratification. From the information-seeking activities, some SARA information was found, and some SARA information were hoaxes. SARA hoax has three meanings and has the potential to cause conflict. Hence, informants applied different conflict management styles in dealing with conflicts that arose.

Abstract

This article discusses the state of research in the field of communication science in Indonesia, focusing on the research development themes. Data were gathered via a survey distributed to communication science study programs in Indonesia that are members of the Association for Higher Education Communication Sciences (ASPIKOM). This paper is strengthened by a review of research findings published in various international journals. The data indicates that communication science research in Indonesia has been trending toward technological advancements, primarily focusing on new media and socio-cultural communication. Most research findings are presented at national/international seminars, with the proceedings serving as the final product. Additionally, based on the data, it can be concluded that while communication science continues to develop in Indonesia, it is still not being used as a vehicle for collaborative learning to advance communication science.

Abstract

Indonesia-Malaysia is two neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. The geographical proximity makes the two countries have a lot in common. However, this similarity does not guarantee that the two countries can coexist harmoniously. One of the problems in the relationship between the two countries is border-related issues, such as illegal fishing in the border area. This issue has been widely covered by the Indonesian mass media, including Metro TV and TVRI. This paper tries to see how Metro TV and TVRI reported the arrest of a Malaysian fishing boat near the border. This study uses a semiotic social visual analysis as a research method and the main theory of social reconstruction of reality. The research findings show Metro TV interprets this incident as illegal fishing and sovereignty violations. Meanwhile, TVRI interpreted this incident as illegal fishing and the achievements of the Indonesian marine police.

Abstract

This paper revisits the academic culture of Communication studies in Indonesia, which has been stagnant since the political tragedy of 1998 to 2021. The autocratic political system of the New Order, on the one hand, and the liberalization of education, on the other, have triggered it, resulting in the phenomenon of ‘dark academia’. This paper wants to address this research question: how is the portrait of communication studies in Indonesia during the last decade? Data were extracted from the collaborative research findings using qualitative methods, organized by the Central Committee of ASPIKOM for the period 2019-2022. The data primarily are generated from the profiles of Communication study program filled out by the ASPIKOM members, as well as from the unstructured interviews and analysis of government policies. This paper finds stagnation in the discipline of Communication studies, particularly the domination of these three special disciplines: Communication science, Public Relations, and Journalism. A combination of bureaucracies in higher education and the global-digital scale of knowledge capitalism hindered academic autonomy and knowledge production within communication sholars.

Abstract

Social media is a platform used by feminist activists for activism. It overcomes spatial and temporal barriers, and helps spread the movement's message more quickly and efficiently. The participatory culture encourages the feminist movement to develop more massively. Many argue that social media helps feminist activists to empower women. Related to the statement, this study observes how activism practices in social media represent women's voices and problems. This study also seeks to reveal the problems in the movement. The researcher observed five accounts of feminist activists on Instagram (@Indonesiafeminis, @lawanpatriarki, @perempuanfeminis, @muslimahfeminis, @perempuan.merdeka). Through the virtual ethnography method, the researcher found a representation problem when digital feminist accounts published the problems experienced by women through their content. These accounts only represent middle-class women's problems. There is also an ethical problem because these accounts tend to be reactive by ignoring the ethics of doing activism.

Abstract

An individual’s subjective assessment of the probability of negative consequences could influence the willingness to perform certain behaviors. Previous literature had identified socio-psychological factors that influence behavioral intention in various contexts. However, their influence on perceived risk and behavioral intention in a pandemic is rarely discussed. Using quantitative approach, empirical data were obtained through a survey of Denpasar citizens aged 17-30 (n=212) and analyzed using the PLS-SEM method. The result suggests that perceived risk could be influenced by interpersonal discussion, trust in institutions, and information-seeking ability. Meanwhile, efficacy belief and perceived risk could influence the intention to wear masks. On the other hand, media and internet exposure do not show significant influence on perceived risk.

Abstract

Climate change poses a significant threat globally. Due to the heavy nature of the issue, climate change news tends to be very negative. Overly negative news can cause psychological disruption and make people avoid the news. The news media plays a huge role in climate mitigation, adaptation, and people’s perspectives on climate change, making it crucial for them to communicate climate change effectively. Constructive journalism may be the solution to this issue. With constructive journalism, journalists avoid negativity bias by focusing not only on the negatives but also on the solutions and positives when reporting a story. This study conducted a quantitative content analysis on 123 climate change articles reported by Kompas.com in 2020 using the six elements of constructive journalism. This research found that Kompas.com’s climate change articles in 2020 were not constructive. The articles emphasized the consequences of climate change with minimal constructive elements to balance the negativity.

Abstract

The contribution of local media in articulating its control function to restore people’s rights and encourage the implementation of good local governance cannot be separated from the professionalism and critical support of the media crew. This is because the relationship between local media and regional authorities is still prone to conflict, complex, and bound by certain emotional-cultural aspects. Using critical discourse analysis, this study examines specifically the editorial texts of two local mainstream newspapers, Flores Pos and Pos Kupang, related to some strategic issues, especially corruption issues, within the Provincial Government of NTT. The study found that the reality of local media can be co-opted by the interests of media owners and local governments. It also confirms that local media are not absolutely neutral or interest-free. The neutrality of local mass media is also influenced by the dominance of media owners who have power relations with regional authorities.

Abstract

Convergence as a model of newspaper mediamorphosis has been carried out since 1995 or a year after the internet entered Indonesia. Bisnis Indonesia started its convergence by launching Bisnis.com in 2006. This study aims to find out the dynamics faced by Bisnis Indonesia in maintaining the firewall, which is the ethics of journalism in commercialization. This is related to media convergence that tends to strengthen the capitalist character of the media. The research method was carried out with a qualitative approach, where the data collection technique was triangulation. The researchers interviewed ten informants from the management and two from customers using the purposive sampling technique. Internal informants range from the president director, editor-in-chief, and reporters. This study finds that convergence can be a solution for Bisnis Indonesia to get out of circulation problems and find revenue to continue their media business. However, it becomes a challenge to maintain the independence of the newsroom.
