Abstract

Various criticisms toward corruptions in Indonesia, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic were conveyed by the public through social media, one of which was social criticism through the Tekotok’s animation on YouTube. This study aims to uncover the meaning behind the sign and how social criticism is depicted in the animation of the Tekotok’s Hones Translator Corruptor. This study uses a critical paradigm approach and used Roland Barthes’ Semiotics as a theory to uncover the meaning in the animation and discover myths. The research shows that Tekotok’s Hones Translator Corruptor displays social criticism that often occurs in real life, such as satire about the corruptor’s behavior, corruption and power relationship, and the lack of punishment for perpetrators of corruption. The myth found in the Tekotok animation is that the first actor who acts feels like a victim to be released from prosecution. The second asks questions about people in lower positions.

Abstract

The pandemic has changed the work order and old patterns that have prevailed in the media. This paper highlights the changing work patterns and news media production in Surakarta City-Indonesia regarding the pandemic. The data were collected by interviews and observations of journalists assigned to cover the area of Surakarta and the newsroom. The results showed a change in the pattern of coverage, number, and broadcast pattern or news packaging model and changes in editorial policy. The orientation of the news is no longer merely to “worship” exclusivity. It requires high creativity so that it does not lose information. The pattern of coverage previously had to go by interviews and direct observations to become a mediated pattern. It became considered taboo for journalists in the era before the pandemic. Photos and videos no longer have to match the news narrative but can be used as substitute objects as long as they have relevance. The format of voice-over news has been changed a lot in the form of live broadcasts, and mini talk shows to fill the program's broadcast duration, which was affected by the decrease in the number of news reports reported by journalists during the pandemic.

Abstract

Besides their economic value, banknotes have a symbolic value through an expression of cultural identity that forms a nation. Generally, the customary design of banknotes in most countries issued by financial authorities is the portrait of notable male leaders. This research examined the banknotes for the 2022 emission yearissued by Bank Indonesia to emphasize the frequent representation of male and female images used in the issued currency. Using the interpretivism paradigm with semiotic methods, this research found that on the surface, Indonesian banknotes in the 2022 emission year seem to show a sense of appreciation for women and femininity in Indonesia but in essence still lack a sense of justice towards women.

Abstract

This paper is written as input for managers of higher education in Communication Studies in regards to the phenomenon of new digital communication technology development, as well as communication theory and research in Indonesia. While many communication scientists outside Indonesia have been talking about the importance of unifying the realms of mass and interpersonal communication theories in the era of digital technology, the teaching of communication theory in Indonesia has not accommodated such convergence. This has resulted in the absence of new/digital communication technologies in the existing communication research. Using the historical perspectives and previous works of communication scientists, a new perspective in the teaching of communication theory can be formulated, one that unifies the boundaries between mass and interpersonal communication. In addition, communication research that considers the presence of new communication technologies should also be pursued.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to elaborate and assess participatory development communication strategies employed in women's empowerment program by an Islamic non-governmental organization, specifically Lembaga Lingkungan Hidup dan Penanggulangan Bencana (LLHPB) 'Aisyiyah (Environment and Disaster Management Institute) Probolinggo City, East Java, Indonesia in 2020 to attain family food security during the Covid-19 pandemic. The three series of activities that constitute this empowerment program include training on planting vegetables, training on vegetables and fish cultivation in buckets, and engaging the online 'Aisyiyah Market group. This study utilized a case study methodology, collecting data through documentation and interviews with six informants who were committee members and members of 'Aisyiyah who are active in the empowerment initiative. This study demonstrates that, generally, the circumstance that the committee retains complete authority during crucial decision-making phases contributes to the practice of participatory communication in empowerment program. According to this study, the three activities used monologic and dialogic communication modalities in varying methods. Because collaborative member involvement only occurs when planning the formation of the 'Aisyiyah Market group, the level of member participation in the other two activities is still at a low level and only reveals involvement at the implementation and post-implementation stages of the activity.

Zakat campaigns in Indonesia have utilized social media as a platform to address various zakat management problems. This research examines the message strategies used by zakat institutions in their campaigns on social media. Messages are an important component in the success of a campaign to influence the voluntary behavior of campaign targets. The message strategy theory applied in this study refers to Tafesse and Wien, including informational, transformational, and interactional messages. This research uses a quantitative approach, employing muzakki zakat in Dompet Dhuafa Waspada, North Sumatra, as the respondents. Data analysis technique used the SEM-PLS approach with SmartPLS 4.0 software. The research results show that the informational and transformational variables had a significant effect on the decision to pay zakat. Meanwhile, the interactional variables had no significant effect on the decision to pay zakat. Therefore, the role of message strategy in zakat campaigns on social media is important to increase zakat fundraising.

Abstract

As an emerging country, Indonesia is facing many environmental problems, with some of the most critical being plastic waste, severe deforestation, and climate change. Under such conditions, communication science plays an important role in pointing to the best way to inform the public so as to stimulate engagement and action to solve these problems. In this article, a systematic literature review of papers on environmental communication published in three leading communication journals in Indonesia was conducted. The findings show that despite the severe environmental problems in Indonesia, a limited number of studies on environmental communication have been published, and only a few methods and designs have been used. Therefore, more attention from communication scholars and intellectuals in Indonesia is needed to address environmental problems in their research. Creating an environmental communication division in existing communication associations is proposed as a practical solution, among others, and is discussed in the outlook section of this study
