Abstract

Since the implementation of Learning from Home (LFH) policy, all of the learning activities are carried out online. Both lecturers and students have to deal with virtual class. As the organizer and facilitator, the lecturer in this case must be able to create not only efficient but also interesting class. The use of assistive media that can be accessed by both parties anytime, anywhere should be considered. This writing is composed in order to recommend some English course activities especially designed for online session. The activities are developed based on the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy by utilizing the use of various applications and social media commonly used by students. The learning design is established in accordance with General English Course syllabus for first semester students in Informatics Engineering, Indraprasta University, yet it is also applicable for any classes that have the similarity on the learning target. Abstract

As grammar or structure is part of English lesson, it is important to find out why the students seem difficult to understand about it. Some of them even do not like this grammar material. The use of L1 could be one of the solutions for this problem. This research is aimed to view the students’ perceptions of L1 use in teaching grammar. The instruments used in the research were questionnaire and interview to senior high school students. The results show that 91.4% of the students had positive response to the use of L1 in teaching English grammar since it will help them to understand English grammar. Yet, the reason for those who gave negative response should also be considered before using L1 in teaching English grammar. Abstract

Learning style is one of the important aspects for both students and teachers so that learning objectives achieved. Students have their own characteristics and strategies that distinguish them from one another. Student learning styles focus on personality learning or problem solving in the classroom. Therefore, the aim of this research is to analyze the students learning styles who Indonesian millennial students use in English language learning. The subjects of this research is the second semester students at Universitas A Pontianak. The population of this research is six students that will take randomly. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method as the research design. The researcher will apply the questionnaire to collect the data. The questionnaire will adopted from the VARK Learning Styles Questionnaire version 8.01, it provides 16 questions item with four optional answers (A,B,C,D). The expected result is to provide useful information for all readers about learning styles especially in English language learning and also get better understanding about the best way of learning. Abstract

The application of two or even three languages is very possible for students at the Junior High School level in metropolitan cities because they are usually directed by their families and environment in adapting to challenges. Especially in private schools in big cities, such as Jakarta, learning languages other than Indonesian are also applied, such as learning in Mandarin and also English. The use of languages (English and Mandarin, in addition to Indonesian) at home also needs to be considered, because it really helps the implementation of language acquisition at home and teaching at school. This study aims to examine students' skills in speaking in three languages. This study uses a qualitative method in comparison with the results of the end-of-semester assessment which is the result of the application of the use of the three languages for students, at home and at school. Abstract

The use of mobile technology for everyone is like a necessity in daily life. No one can ignore the impact of mobile technology especially from android mobile system that led the progression of technology todays. However, this technology development can be utilized by language learners to increase and encourage them in mastering the English language use. They can utilize the application inside the android system in improving pronunciation accuracy. Furthermore, it can help teachers to teach their learners in using English language spoken. Everyone knows that learning pronunciation needs time to take some practices. The writer initiated the application of learning English pronunciation by using a default application inside android system. The application calls as Google Voice Search. It can be used as learning strategy to improve the accuracy for learner and to be aware about the mistake which has been made by them. This Google voice Search system can be used as self-evaluation in pronouncing English language. This study investigated the first semester students of English Department in Jakarta. The writer designed the study as learning strategy to help learners aware about their mistake in pronouncing English language. The use of android mobile phone is shown the progression of most 72% learners’ pronunciation growing better and it improved learners’ confidence in using English orally. They also stated that they really like this application because it led them to be more technology savvy. It can facilitate the learners in pronouncing English accurately when they use in spoken English. Keywords: Android, Application, Pronunciation, Google Search Voice

Abstract

Students are having diverse learning styles, personalities, needs, interests, and intelligences, which affect students’ engagement to the teaching and learning processes including English Language Teaching and Learning. And therefore teacher should accommodate those diversities by differentiating the instructions that provide varieties of activities students can choose based on their own interests. Using Digital Choice Board under the framework of differentiated instructions philosophy, teacher’s effort to engage the students by giving them “Merdeka Belajar” and freedom to choose can be implemented. This paper discuss the implementation of Digital Choice Board to engage students in EFL teaching and learning and provide evidence how Digital Choice Board can improve students’ engagement in learning narrative text.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, the government issued the policy of study from home (SFH) by which it revealed pros and cons from society. From the website of gtk.kemdikbud.go.id, it was stated that starting offline learning is still being discussed because the covid-19 pandemic is not over. This situation really annoyed the primary school teachers for their teaching learning process. Concerning with this unclear decision, it is necessary to explore the teachers’ perceptions towards the learning process that has been done since it may be used as a consideration for the government to prolong the study from home. To get the data of this study, open and close-ended questionnaires were used for 30 respondents who were domiciled in Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, and Bekasi. They are all primary school teachers who are teaching English. Afterwards, the results of the survey were analyzed using a quantitative and qualitative method in finding the teachers’ perceptions towards online learning, Finally, the results showed that there are two categories of teachers’ perception, i.e., negative perceptions and positive perceptions. The negative perceptions of the teachers are related to the internet connection, uncooperative students’ parents, lack of facilities, students’ laziness, and students’ understanding of materials; whereas the positive perceptions of the teachers are the increase of teachers’ knowledge of technology, flexible time in teaching, capable of using variety of teaching applications. Abstract

The development of authorial voice of university students in their academic writing is critical. This paper presents a summary and critical highlights of the pedagogical research, tools and interventions that aim to inculcate awareness and development of authorial voice in the academic writing of university students. The aim of this review is to make a case for a more student-facing and reflexive authorial voice learning tool. The paper argues that the majority of research and intervention that focuses in authorial voice stems from a researcher-facing or assessment perspective. The paper concludes by calling for a voice-specific learning tool that will attempt a more reflexive, student-facing approach to teaching novice student-writers about their authorial voice. Abstract

Reading strategy is an essential skill required by the students to gain knowledge and information about certain reading texts. The purpose of this study is to provide an extensive literature review on reading strategy. Articles were located through publish or perish software, Google Scholar, and Scopus. We analyzed 92 articles from 2016 to 2021. Mendeley software was applied to manage and resume the references. The researchers reviewed this database and attempted to classify articles using VOSviewer software. Eight clusters have reviewed the words most frequently occurring in each group were achievement, examination, attitude, comprehension, evidence, case, contribution, and case study.
