Abstract

This study aims to develop a textbook on the subject of Information Technology and Computers with a self-regulated learning approach. This research uses Development and Research method through 4D Model. The definition stage is carried out by determining the characteristics of the textbook that will be developed through the initial study. The design stage, namely by choosing the format and design of the textbook to produce the first correction (draft). The development stage is carried out to produce the second draft, third correction, and the final product of the textbook. The second correction is obtained through the revised expert validation results that have been recommended. The third correction is the acquisition of small group test results by taking randomly. Based on the results of field tests on students who are taking Computer Information and Technology courses, the final product is obtained from the textbook. One of the textbook features and tools developed is the project task feature. Based on the validation of the textbook and its supporting tools, the criteria are very feasible and ready to be used and can guide student learning independently through the features in the textbook. The development of this textbook is expected to help in developing not only Information Technology and Computers but also other materials that use computers. Abstract

Textbook plays a significant role in the field of English Language learning and teaching in Bangladesh. English For Today is the textbook for higher secondary level (Grade 11 & 12) which is designed by the NCTB (National Curriculum and Textbook Board) on the basis of communicative approach. Based on the previous studies, it is assumed that though the textbook is designed under the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), it has failed to meet the demands of the learners and teachers in terms of bringing communicative competency. Keeping this issue in mind, the study aims to examine the textbook through in-depth analysis using the criteria from CLT. Qualitative descriptive analysis was used for this study to analyses the textbook in terms of how communicative, authentic and meaningful it is and whether it is accuracy or fluency oriented. The findings of the study reveal that most of the activities of the textbook do not reflect the principles of CLT approach which limits the student’s freedom of practicing all the language skills and as a result they end up being incompetent communicator. Finally, the paper concludes with some recommendations for the authorities to bring necessary changes in the activities and contents of the textbook in order to be an effective tool for both the language learners and teachers. Abstract

Mentally retarded students learn English with difficulties. The limitation is related to the mental problems as the main obstacle to learn English. The use of digital tools can be very beneficial in teaching and learning English for mentally retarded students. There were several types of research related to mentally retarded students but there was no research about the digital literacy practices of special school teachers in teaching English. This paper investigates the digital literacy practices of teachers in teaching English for mentally retarded students. The participants of this research were 15 special school teachers from three special schools around Jakarta, Tangerang and Kediri. The data of this research was gained through an open-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and online observation. The result showed that teachers in special schools were able to use some applications and digital tools in their teaching such as Ms Office, Video, Whatsapp, Google Form and Cap Cut. Their functional skills have been well-developed. Moreover, they could operate and use these digital tools for teaching and it was affected by teachers’ ages and work-period. In line with digital literacy practices, the findings showed that teachers have already used some digital tools in some ways based on Hague and Payton framework: teachers could create digital contents such as power point, video, voice recording and images (creativity), 86.7% of teachers have selected useful material by watching the downloaded video before giving them to the students (critical thinking and evaluation), 73.3% of teachers used digital tools to introduce their students to foreign cultures to raise their tolerance among citizens (cultural and social understanding), teachers used video to promote collaborative learning (collaboration), 53% of teachers found no difficulties to find and select information (finding and selecting information ability), 86.7% of teachers liked to review the information then shared them with others (effective communication) and 66.7% of teachers used trusted websites to download teaching materials (e-safety). On the other hand, the findings showed that special school teachers faced some challenges in using digital tools for teaching mentally retarded students such as difficulties in downloading teaching materials, lack of internet access, less-focused students, number of students in class, short teaching period and in availability of teacher’s guide. With these conditions, teachers were expected to upgrade themselves by being long-life learners and being open-minded for any updates. Moreover, this paper contributed to English language teaching literature especially for mentally retarded students. Keywords: Digital Literacy; Special School; ELT

Abstract

Since late 2019 the world is transmitted of corona virus diseases- 19. During this pandemic many sectors in the world are changing. Teaching and learning model also changed, almost 4 semesters university may not implement face to face/ direct teaching and learning process, but it should be applied online. Speaking is one of the most fundamental language skills which also used to apply in online, and during this remote learning speaking practice is quite tricky, because it’s need to be responded directly and showing speaker’s gesture and eye contact. Synchronous and asynchronous speech online is needed to overcome that situation. In synchronous students and lecturer are doing virtual discuss and speaking practice through Google meet, and the asynchronous process is done by recorded video or voice then students need to submit through Google classroom or Microsoft Team, while in synchronous model students and lecturer are doing virtual meeting and interact directly. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive method to explain how speaking online is implemented in process of teaching and learning during this pandemic. There were 115 students as a sample, and the data collection is taking through survey, interview and test. based on the result, it shows that online teaching and learning speaking through synchronous model is the most effective, because in this model lecturer can give feedback automatically while doing virtual learning, and students also are able to communicate directly and practice in the spot time with doing self-repair. Beside of that, teaching speaking also can be implemented through video record with simulate the picture while speaking, that model is quite effective to treat student’s speaking skill and they are able to speak and avoid their anxiety. Abstract

Internship is essential for polytechnic students to apply their knowledge on a particular subject. In applying the knowledge, students are required to do internships at offices that are in line with their study program. In this case, reading comprehension becomes the main focus of the application in doing the internship. This study aims to describe the implementation of reading comprehension during the internship program at the international relation office of a public university in Bandung. The reading comprehension is applied in three activities: collecting information on exchange programs, searching for the information on short programs, as well as gathering information on important dates of university’s partners. Data collection methods applied in this study are observation and library study. This study shows that reading comprehensions such as scanning, skimming, and making interpretations are highly utilized in the tasks: seeking essential information in universities official websites, checking the availability of short programs for foreign students, and finding the differences on important dates among countries university’s partners. These works are important for both interns to improve and apply the knowledge and the university to get the updated information on global education and mobility.
