The researcher has used four tools: 1) a questionnaire for teachers to determine the most important reading comprehension skills for IX-standard students, 2) an achievement test (pre & post), and 3) the suggested computer-based programme for the reading texts. The results of the study revealed that the computer-based programme has been effective to develop the reading comprehension skills of IX-standard students. In light of these results, the researcher recommends that language teachers should use computers as a tool for enhancing students’ reading comprehension. Abstract

As part of a larger research on EFL student teachers’ TPACK development, this study explores a preparation program aimed to train EFL student teachers to be technology savvy and at the same time develop their skill on technology integration in teaching English through reflective based activities. It involved 42 EFL student teachers and a teacher educator in 16 weeks learning interaction that focused on technology integration for classroom purpose. A case study design was utilized by obtaining data from observation of online classroom interaction, semi-structured interview with the teacher educator and the student teachers and documents of student teachers’ submitted tasks. The data were thematically analysed to reveal types of reflection-based activities employed to develop EFL student teachers’ competence in integrating technology in teaching English and their responses toward the activities. The findings reveal that at least four reflection-based activities (lesson design, digital story, reading reflection and reflection during the learning) were employed to foster the student teachers’ skill of technology integration in teaching English. Despite some challenges in their enactment, the reflection-based activities were positively responded as indicated by the EFL student teachers’ active participation in online classroom interaction and their positive views regarding reflection-based activities. Abstract

Writing, one of the productive skills, is a language skill teachers need to pay more attention to. When teaching her writing skills, the teacher must develop a learning model based on the student’s needs. This study aims to develop and test an academic writing learning model based on a process-genre approach to improve students’ critical thinking skills. Researchers use a research and design (R&D) approach related to 4D theory, which consists of four main phases: definition, design, development, and dissemination. The research was conducted at UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten with participants from a student group, lecturers and two expert persons. This result indicates that the learning model using the process-genre approach proved to be valid, practical, and effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills. With these findings, each lecturer will be able to develop their learning model according to the needs of their students and lecturers so that they can support efforts to achieve their expected goals. Abstract

The English final examination is no longer a high-stake test since National Examination (NE) was abolished in 2021 and replaced with the Ujian Satuan Pendidikan (USP). Therefore, this study explores the washback effects experienced by Indonesian EFL teachers and students and discovers teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the implementation of USP. Six participants, three Indonesian English Foreign Language (EFL) teachers, and three Public Vocational High School students in Singosari were interviewed to meet the research goals. The findings indicated that focusing on teaching to the test, cheating, and feelings and attitudes were the washback effects of the English final examination in implementing USP. Then, the English final examination still harms the teaching and learning process and teachers’ and students’ feelings and attitudes, even though it is not a high-stake test. Besides, the implementation of USP also reduces the washback effect of the English final examination. Keywords: Washback effect, final examination, teachers’ and students’ voices

Abstract

Many studies have been conducted on politeness strategies employed by EFL learners in social communication or classroom contexts. As a result, it is fascinating to analyze the extent to which scholars have explored this issue. By examining 20 published articles in reputable journals in a decade (2011 – 2021), this literature review study aimed to investigate the politeness strategies employed among EFL learners and the pedagogical implications of politeness strategies in EFL classrooms. The findings showed that there were five politeness strategies used in social communication, including positive politeness, bald on-record, negative politeness, off-record, and do not do FTA. Nonetheless, the latest strategy was not employed in the classroom context. Each strategy chosen by EFL learners was due to the power, social distance, age, and cultural background. These findings shed light on the pedagogical implication of politeness strategies, which should be implied in the teaching learning process and in designing the course and preparing the materials. Abstract

The Third Culture Kid (TCK); is the term used to describe individuals whose formative years are spent outside their origin’s culture. A TCK is defined as an individual whose sense of belonging is not specified to any particular culture for their self-definition. This paper will be looking at the effects of English learning as the second (L2) and/or foreign (FL) language on the establishment of language and cultural identity in Third Culture Kid (TCK). The target group selected in this paper is specifically the TCKs from non-native English speaking background. The aspects to be explored are the impact of L2/FL on native language (L1) in general, and then delving deeper into the effects of English as the L2/FL on the TCKs’ L1 specifically. The paper will also be discussing the process of language identity formation in the TCKs with respect to English learning, the construction of these students’ cultural identity, and the role of teachers as cultural mediators in the classroom for this particular cohort. The theoretical framework for the analysis on the cultural aspect will be using the Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions structure as a reference.
