Abstract

Learner autonomy has been playing an essential role in EFL learning for over thirty years. In Bangladesh, English speaking classrooms are mainly teacher-centered, and only limited space on learner autonomy paves the way for this study. The study focuses on the present scenario of practicing learner autonomy in an English-speaking classroom and the challenges of implementation at the tertiary level. In Bangladesh, enormous work has been done on developing English speaking skills, but a few works have been conducted on practicing learner autonomy in an English-speaking classroom. The study was non-experimental research and followed a casual-comparative design. The research used mixed methods for data analysis. In the quantitative approach, descriptive statistics and inferential statistics have been used. The results have been analyzed by SPSS 28.0 (Statistical Package for Social Science) and Microsoft Office excels. For qualitative approach, focused group interview has been done. The findings show that learners' autonomy is not being practiced adequately in an English speaking classroom. Both teachers and learners tend to practice "reactive autonomy" than "proactive autonomy." The study also sheds light on the positive attitude of both learners and teachers on practicing learner autonomy in an English speaking classroom and the challenges of its implementation in the English classroom at the tertiary level. This work can be useful in supporting learner autonomous classroom and will be beneficial for further study. Moreover, the study anticipates further study in this field is necessary.

Abstract

The aims of the study to find an ideal approach to enhance students in this theatre course and facilitate them for literature understanding through several literature theories. This study proposed a sociological literature approach with two elements. There are consist of the sociology of the author and the sociology of literature. To explain Existence on the absurdity of the character, Existence on the collective absurdity, Existence of personality structure based on data. The existentialism approach was also used to solve the complexity of concepts in each drama script. Through the two elements of the sociology of literature, we acquired that the essence of existentialism is the term exists, as Camus’s work on rebellion theme, I rebel; such as, I exist. Talking about the absurdity of literary works is talking about the notion of absurdity itself and the notion of its feeling, and then about attitudes determining our actions. Absurdity also needs to be explored through emotions and intertextuality. Keywords: absurdity, existentialism, drama. theater

Abstract

The aims of this study were to determine the implementation of lecturers about CALL. This study uses a qualitative method with individual interview techniques. Three lecturers teach essential reading which are the samples of this research. There are two, namely: (1) introducing CALL to lecturers and trying to apply it in the reading learning process in class; (2) interviewing lecturers to find out their perception of CALL. Implementation of CALL is an application or computer software as a technology used in learning the context of a second language. The application of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is one way to develop language teaching practices. The study describes the degree of CALL implementation by Essential Reading Lectures. It applies descriptive qualitative research which is used to discover information on a certain phenomenon. In this research, multiple interviews with open-ended questions were conducted to collect data. Furthermore, the information was analyzed qualitatively by describing the findings supported by relevant theories. The conclusion CALL makes students more enthusiastic in learning English and improves their English skills, especially in terms of reading comprehension. In addition, the application of CALL can improve their skills in using computers for future careers. CALL also provides lecturers to create discussion groups or forums that can be accessed by students. Keywords: CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning, implementation, Essential Reading Lecturers

Abstract

Translation plays an important role in assisting the audiences for understanding the information of the writer or speaker. In order to avoid misunderstanding, the translator needs to consider the methods they used. It should be depended on the object to be translated and the addressee. Therefore, this study aimed at identifying the translation methods and the translation ideology in the translation of an English fairytale entitled “The Bogey-Beast” retold by Flora Annie Steel (1922). This fairytale translated in Indonesian by Pustaka Bahasa Inggris. This study employed the theory of translation ideology proposed by Venutti (1995). Besides, in investigating the translation method used by the translator, this study employed the translation method theory constructed by Newmark (1988). Through descriptive qualitative approach, the findings of this study revealed that the translator used six methods such as word-for-word, literal, faithful, semantics, free, and idiomatic translation. Meanwhile, semantics translation method was the dominant method used by the translator. Thus, it can be concluded that the translator of Indonesian version “The Bogey-Beast” fairytale tends to the foreignization ideology. Abstract

One of the biggest obstacles for translators is cultural differences which can obstruct making a good translation. This research aims to explain the cultural filters in the English-Indonesian translation of the fable entitled The Two Ducks and The Fox based on the dimensions proposed by House (2004, 2005). The research applies descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used transcription in order to collect the data. The data were analyzed based on those dimensions of cultural filters. However, the translator of the fable only applied four dimensions such as the terms of directness, orientation towards self versus orientation towards other, orientation towards content versus orientation towards addressee, and explicitness versus implicitness. As a result, the researcher found that there were 9 cultural filters in The Two Ducks and The Fox. It consisted of one indirectness to directness, one orientation towards the other to the orientation towards self, four orientations towards addressees to the orientation towards content, one the orientation towards addressees to the orientation towards content, and 2 explicitness into implicitness. As a result, the cultural filters can help the translators to overcome the problems relating to cultural differences in both the source language and target language. Abstract

Oral communication in front of an audience is known as public speaking, a combination of speaking skills and the art of speaking. Speaking in front of an audience involves more than just getting your point out; it also involves considering how well it will be received and accepted into the hearts of the audience. Learning public speaking has its own challenges. The purpose of this study is to identify the challenges faced by students in learning public speaking. It is a descriptive qualitative study with 13 participants from an English Language Education Study Program in Surabaya. Purposive sampling was used to obtain the participants. Two instruments are needed to collect data in this study: a questionnaire and an interview. The results of the study show that the challenges faced by students, in general, include two things, namely internal and external challenges. Internal challenges include psychological conditions, language competence (vocabulary mastery, fluency, and pronunciation), and topical knowledge, while external challenges are performance conditions and learning environment. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the speech acts used by three English teachers of SMPIT Nurul Ikhwan Nagan Raya, SMA Tunas Luhur, and SMKN 2 Payakumbuh during online teaching and learning process. This research was descriptive-qualitative. The data were the subjects’ utterances obtained by observations on six online learning videos from YouTube. It was transcribed into the written form, selected to fit the study’s objective, recorded into the datasheets, interpreted, and analyzed using speech acts theory. The practice of triangulation was used by asking the expert to check data validity. The result showed that declarative locutionary act was mainly used in representatives to utter some explanations of the materials. Directive and representative illocutionary acts were dominantly used. Questioning act of directive used mostly to allow the students to be active and check their comprehension. Explaining and informing of representative were used frequently to transfer the materials and tell certain facts to the students. Perlocutionary act student(s): learn something and do something were primarily occurred. Student(s): learn something mainly occurred when performed explaining and informing of representative resulted to students knew/understood the given explanations and information. Perlocutionary act student(s): do something mainly occurred when questioning and commanding of directive resulted in students giving the answers and doing as commanded. The subjects’ ways in expressing speech acts were quite different since having different background and culture. They used Bahasa Indonesia than English in performing speech acts. It is suggested that the teachers should use English more than Bahasa Indonesia when teaching English. Abstract

Language teaching materials play a significant role in language learning as it provides input for learners. The language input should contain all of the aspects of communicative competence, one of which is pragmatic competence. This is because pragmatics deals with language use in context. Learning a language is not merely about learning how to make grammatically correct sentences, but it is also about how to use the sentence appropriately. Thus, learners should be exposed to pragmatics to be able to use the language they learn in context. For this reason, this study aims to design a pragmatic formula for English language teaching materials (textbooks) development as previous studies on pragmatics on English language textbooks reported that many of them, particularly the local ones contain insufficient pragmatic knowledge. The present research employed a qualitative approach by referring to the earlier studies on pragmatics in language textbooks. Findings indicated that it was not an easy assignment to design pragmatic formula as it required a lot of observation of teaching materials and pragmatic judgment by a native speaker of American English. Abstract

The pandemic is not over yet; Therefore, teaching and learning English with an online platform is still preferable. Like any other medium of instruction, an online platform has its challenges and problems, particularly in teaching English to lower-level adult learners. Shumin (1997) has mentioned several factors influencing the development of adult learners’ speaking abilities. They are age, sociocultural factors, emotions, self-esteem, empathy, anxiety, attitude, and motivation. In relation to online learning, Altakhaineh, Alhendi, Dweikat (2021) state that the problems faced by students and educators are similar. They are time management, teaching methods, lack of encouragement and motivation, and lack of knowledge regarding online teaching tools. This research, therefore, aims to investigate the specific challenges and problems of teaching English to lower-level students through Zoom in the Indonesian context. This research is unique because the class is participated by people from three areas in Indonesia. Since they come from different areas, the facilities and access that they have and can make use of will vary. The research will start with a pre-test. Then, the teaching/research will start from late October 2022 to early February 2023. The result of this research is to identify the specific challenges and problems of online teaching English to low-level adult learners and the method/s used/can be used to overcome them. Abstract

The problems of this research are focused on whether the character values are found in the English textbook or not and how they are reflected. This research analyzes all chapters in the English textbook entitled Pathway to English for SMA/MA Grade X, specifically the reading texts. The approach of this research is qualitative research. In collecting the data, two types of instruments are used which are the researcher herself and the data sheet. The result of this research showed that there are 18 character values reflected in this textbook covering all of them. Appreciation was represented 16 times in the reading texts, being the highest value of all. To reflect appreciation value in teaching and learning process, one of the ways that teachers can do to integrate it is they can motivate the students to produce something useful for themselves as well as society or give rewards to the students who do their jobs well. It can be concluded that this English textbook is ideal as a teaching material for developing character values of students because it contains all 18 character values that the 2013 Curriculum suggests should be included in the textbook. Knowing that the Ministry of Education and Culture requires English textbook for Senior High School to include at least eight values, this book shows that an ideal English textbook exists.
