Abstract

Surabaya was a city in Indonesia with increasingly developing regional arts. To showcase art performances, a facility was needed to accommodate such activities, namely a Performing Arts Building. Surabaya had a Performing Arts Building that served as a platform for artists to practice and present their works, located in the Cak Durasim building. However, the existing Performing Arts Building was still inadequate in terms of facilities and spatial layout. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the effectiveness of the spatial layout in supporting the building’s main function as a venue for performing arts and to provide design recommendations to make the performing arts building more functional and efficient, in accordance with the needs of its users—including artists, audiences, and administrators. This study employed a qualitative observation method, where the researcher closely observed the study site, recorded room sizes and spatial placements, and considered the relationships among aspects of the phenomenon by involving users, art enthusiasts, and spatial standards in the Cak Durasim Performing Arts Building in Surabaya. The research was expected to identify the effectiveness of the current spatial layout in supporting the building’s primary function and to offer design recommendations that would enhance its functionality and efficiency for all stakeholders involved.

Abstract

This study explores the contribution of neo-vernacular architecture to the formation and preservation of local cultural identity, with a case study of the Balai Pemuda building in Surabaya. Neo-vernacular architecture is recognized as a design approach that combines traditional elements with modern styles, making it relevant in the context of cultural preservation in urban environments. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques including case studies, field observations, visual documentation, and in-depth interviews. Findings reveal that elements such as roof forms, decorative motifs, and spatial arrangements in Balai Pemuda reflect the cultural values of Surabaya. The integration of traditional elements within a modern design framework not only enhances the architectural character of the building but also raises public awareness about the importance of preserving cultural heritage. The results of this study contribute to the discourse on architectural design that respects cultural context and promotes the creation of sustainable, contextual, and culturally enriched architecture.

Abstract

This study finds that symbolism in memorial architecture plays a crucial role in shaping emotional experiences and fostering collective awareness of tragedy. The Aceh Tsunami Museum case studies and the Ground Zero Memorial reveal that design elements such as form, light, materials, and spatial arrangement are employed as meaningful symbolic media. In the Aceh Tsunami Museum, formal symbolism is evident in the spiral form and the façade inspired by traditional Acehnese houses, representing an emotional journey from fear to hope and a resilient local identity. Material and spiritual symbolism emerge through water, natural light, and reflective spaces like the Prayer Well. In the Ground Zero Memorial, symbolism is expressed through voids, flowing water, and the sunken plaza landscape, signifying loss and the healing process. The findings indicate that architectural symbolism reinforces historical narratives and cultural values and creates contemplative spaces that effectively evoke empathy and spiritual awareness.

Abstract

The construction of new buildings in heritage neighborhood presents complex challenges that require a balance between preserving the historic value of the area or accommodating the needs of today's society. This research examines the conflicts that can arise during the planning process of new buildings in managing these challenges. The research focuses on a case study of a cultural heritage area in an urban area of Surabaya, where a proposed development project triggered visual and regulatory conflicts. Through a cultural heritage approach and analysis of relevant theories, this research explores how the history of an area contributes to its current development. In addition, it examines the strategies used to resolve the conflict while maintaining the historical value. The findings of this research are expected to provide insights into the integration of new buildings in cultural heritage neighborhood through recommendations to practitioners and policy makers to address these challenges more effectively.

Abstract

School buildings play a strategic role in supporting the educational process while also contributing to environmental quality. Amid rising carbon emissions and worsening environmental conditions, the implementation of the green building concept has become a crucial solution in designing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly schools. This study examines the application of sustainable architectural principles, including energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy sources, improved indoor air quality, and user comfort. Case studies conducted at several elementary schools in DKI Jakarta demonstrate that optimizing natural ventilation, natural lighting, and the use of solar panels can significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. The findings affirm that the adoption of green building principles not only creates a healthy and comfortable physical environment but also fosters an educational ecosystem that supports the long-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

Abstract

The application of green architecture principles to boarding houses is an attempt to create a decent and sustainable dwelling. Green architecture connects occupants, buildings and the environment in a mutually beneficial relationship with minimal negative impacts. Kafnath boarding house in East Jakarta, which started operating in 2023, was chosen as a case study due to its diverse application of architectural principles. This study aims to determine the influence of green architectural principles on occupant adaptation in boarding houses. The method used was descriptive quantitative through a Likert scale questionnaire, analysed by multiple linear regression using SPSS. The results showed that the application of green architecture has a positive impact in the form of comfort and ease of adaptation, thus forming occupant loyalty during their stay.

Abstract

Citra Niaga area in Samarinda, a recipient of the Aga Khan Award, has experienced a significant decline in existence due to modern competition and the erosion of sense of place. This research aims to identify sense of place elements (physical form, activity, meaning) based on cross-generational perceptions to formulate an adaptive revitalization strategy. Using data (Likert scale questionnaire and qualitative) from 93 respondents (visitors and merchants), the quantitative analysis shows the historical value and original architecture of Citra Niaga is appreciated. However, significant weaknesses were seen in the diversity of activities, quality of facilities, and physical tidiness. The qualitative analysis highlighted an aspiration gap between generations: the older generation longs for the nostalgia of the past, while the younger generation seeks dynamic experiences and modern facilities. Key complaints include parking issues, cleanliness, and lack of creative events. These results emphasize the need for a holistic approach. The proposed revitalization strategy includes preserving the original architecture along with improving parking facilities and arrangements, diversifying activities through cultural events and contemporary tenants, and building a historical narrative that appeals to all generations. The goal is to transform Citra Niaga into a relevant, beloved and sustainable public space for the people of Samarinda.

Abstract

The decline in the environmental quality of tourism locations in the development and management system is one of the main factors that make tourist destinations no longer attractive to the public. This study aims to design a transition from a forest tourism that is experiencing environmental degradation to an Ecopark through a tourism and sustainability concept. This way, the current environmental content can have alternative solutions. The implementation of the research in this case uses several methods including case studies, surveys, data processing, analysis, spatial program analysis and concepts in the form of design visualization. The research location is in the Albasia Forest in Kuala Dua Village, Kubu Raya Regency, which is a productive forest from an industry that was converted into a village tourism location. This study focuses on an environmental issue that is raised in order to encourage aspects of sustainability in the Albasia Forest itself and its surrounding environment. The conclusion of this design is to create a public space with an Ecopark basis as an effort to restore the identity of a public tourism space that is oriented towards improving the environment to activity spaces and can be a reference for local governments or local figures for subsequent designs.

Abstract

The diversity of materials that occur today in Kampung Romo Mangun-Code has aspects that do not meet the initial objectives of Romo Mangun himself. This study aims to identify what factors influence the changes in materials that occur significantly. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The descriptive research method is a method used to describe, interpret, a change that occurs, such as changes in materials that occur in houses in the Kampung Code settlement. Changes in materials that have changed such as construction, formerly wood, now concrete, walls that were originally bamboo have become bricks, and roofs that originally used clay tiles, while now metal roofs. Factors that influence such as lifestyle, adaptation to the environment, and economic factors. Future studies are expected to analyze the impact of modern materials used today.
