Abstract

This article formulates an integrative model for interpreting Qur’anic verses on gender relations through Amina Wadud’s tawhidic hermeneutics and Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir’s qira’ah mubadalah. The central question is how tawhid, justice, and reciprocity may become an exegetical procedure that preserves textual authority while preventing patriarchal bias in meaning production. This study employs qualitative library research using descriptive-analytical and thematic-critical analysis of Wadud’s and Kodir’s primary works, selected Qur’anic verses, and contemporary scholarship on gender-sensitive exegesis. The analytical procedure consists of linguistic analysis, socio-historical contextualization, intra-textual coherence, formulation of universal principles, mubadalah-based reciprocity, and maqasid/harm analysis. The application to Q. 9:71, Q. 33:35, and Q. 4:34 demonstrates that the tawhidic–mubadalah integration expands the moral subject of the verses, interprets qiwamah as functional and conditional responsibility, understands nusyuz as a two-way relational problem, and affirms non-violent conflict resolution within family ethics.

Abstract

This study analyzes the concept of thematic unity (al-wahdah al-mawdhu‘iyyah or nazm) in Qur’anic exegesis as developed by two important figures in modern exegesis, Hamiduddin Al-Farahi (1863–1930) and Sa‘id Hawwa (1935–1989) (Khanan et al., 2025). Both represent two distinct but complementary methodological styles: Al-Farahi with a structural-linguistic approach that emphasizes the internal coherence of the text through the concepts of ‘umud (the central theme of the surah) and nazm (verse coherence), while Sa‘id Hawwa developed a thematic-conceptual exegesis (tafsir mawdhu‘i) that highlights the inter-verse relationships (munasabah) and the moral and social relevance of revelation. Using qualitative-comparative methods and a hermeneutical approach to interpretation, this study explores the epistemological similarities and methodological differences between the two, and assesses their implications for modern exegesis studies. The results demonstrate that the thematic unity theory offers a new paradigm for understanding the Quran integratively rejecting atomistic readings and emphasizing that each chapter possesses an interconnected architecture of meaning. The synergy between the nazm (Farahi) and the thematic-applicative (Hawwa) approaches enriches exegesis studies with a balance between scientific rigor and contextual relevance (Basir et al., 2022). These findings are expected to contribute to the development of a modern exegesis methodology that is not only academic and linguistic, but also reflective of the social realities of contemporary Muslims.

Abstract

This study examines the philosophical foundations of Islamic Educational Management (IEM) through an epistemological analysis of modern management theory. The rapid adoption of modern management models in educational institutions has raised critical questions regarding their philosophical compatibility with Islamic values and educational objectives. Using a qualitative, library-based research design and philosophical analysis, this study explores the sources, validity, and assumptions of knowledge underlying both Islamic educational management and modern management theory. The findings reveal that IEM is grounded in a theocentric epistemology that integrates revelation, reason, empirical experience, and ethical consciousness, positioning management as a moral and spiritual responsibility rather than a value-neutral technical process. In contrast, modern management theory is largely rooted in positivist and empiricist epistemologies that emphasize efficiency, productivity, and instrumental rationality. Despite these differences, the study identifies significant points of convergence, particularly in the use of rational planning, organizational systems, and empirical tools. The study argues that modern management knowledge can be selectively integrated into Islamic educational contexts through an epistemological synthesis that aligns efficiency with ethical and spiritual accountability. This research contributes to the theoretical development of Islamic educational management by offering a conceptual framework that bridges modern management theory and Islamic epistemology, and provides philosophical guidance for educational leaders seeking value-based and contextually relevant management practices.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the stages of the creation of the universe through a tahlili study of QS. Al-A'raf verse 54 from the perspective of scientific interpretation. The research method used is a qualitative method with a library research approach, where data is collected from primary sources in the form of classical and contemporary tafsir books, as well as secondary sources in the form of scientific journals and books relevant to the theme of the creation of the universe. Data analysis was carried out using the tahlili method which includes linguistic studies, asbabun nuzul, munasabah of verses, and comparison of interpretations from five selected tafsir books, namely Tafsir Al-Azhar, Tafsir Al-Mishbah, Tafsir Al-Maraghi, Tafsir Al-Munir, and Tafsir Ibnu Katsir. The research findings show that QS. Al-A'raf verse 54 is a fundamental foundation in understanding the concept of the creation of the universe according to Islam, which affirms that Allah SWT is the sole Creator who created the heavens and the earth in six periods gradually with full wisdom. Creation in six periods can be correlated with the stages of cosmic evolution in modern science without substantial contradiction. The mufassirs agree that this verse contains theological, epistemological, spiritual, and ethical dimensions that are highly relevant to the contemporary context. The implications of this research indicate that an integrative approach between Quranic interpretation and modern science can strengthen the faith of Muslims while providing an intellectual foundation for constructive dialogue between religion and science in understanding the origin and structure of the universe.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays a fundamental role in Arabic language learning, particularly at the secondary school level where students begin to develop more complex language skills. However, vocabulary instruction in many schools remains dominated by teacher-centered and memorization-based approaches, which often result in low student engagement and limited retention. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Mughamarah fil ‘Arabiyyah, a non-digital game-based learning medium, in improving students’ Arabic vocabulary mastery. The study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of 12 eighth-grade students at SMP Bina Dakwah, Bogor, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a 20-item Arabic vocabulary test administered before and after the implementation of the game-based learning intervention. Descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery, with the mean score increasing from 68.18 in the pretest to 90.67 in the posttest. These findings indicate that Mughamarah fil ‘Arabiyyah is an effective instructional medium for enhancing Arabic vocabulary learning, particularly in educational contexts with limited technological resources. This study contributes to Arabic language pedagogy by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of non-digital game-based learning media and offers practical insights for teachers seeking engaging vocabulary instruction strategies in resource-limited classrooms.

Abstract

This study departs from the numerous discussions on gender equality that are always echoed by feminists. The discourse on gender equality in contemporary Islamic discourse continues to undergo dynamics, especially when some circles consider that the interpretation of the Qur'an still contains gender bias. Based on considerations of controversy and life context, this study focuses on examining the interpretation of QS. Ali ʻImran {3}: 195 and its relevance to the discourse on gender equality. This study is a pure literature study with primary data from QS. Ali ʻImran {3}: 195. This study also uses documentation data collection techniques and descriptive and content analysis data analysis. The results of this study show that this verse emphasizes that Allah and His Messenger do not discriminate between human deeds based on gender. Both men and women have the same position and status in the eyes of Allah as long as they are believers and are willing to fight in the way of Allah. Allah will give the same reward for their deeds without favoring one gender over another. This is certainly relevant to the gender equality that is being promoted today, that there is no difference between the deeds/actions of men and women. All of them must be valued and given the same appreciation.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country characterized by a high level of religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity, which necessitates a religious approach capable of maintaining social harmony and cohesion. Religious moderation has emerged as an essential concept in responding to such pluralism by emphasizing balance, tolerance, and justice in understanding and practicing religious teachings. This article aims to examine the concept of religious moderation, its foundations and underlying principles, its core values, objectives and urgency, forms of implementation, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors within the Indonesian social context. This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method, analyzing scholarly books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and relevant policy documents. The findings indicate that religious moderation is grounded in strong theological, philosophical, and constitutional foundations and plays a strategic role in preventing conflict, strengthening humanitarian values, and maintaining national integration. The implementation of religious moderation requires sustained collaboration among the government, educational institutions, religious leaders, and society. Despite challenges such as radicalism, limited digital literacy, identity politics, and the lack of exemplary leadership, religious moderation remains a fundamental pillar in fostering a peaceful, just, and tolerant society in Indonesia.
