Abstract

English has been considered an important means of international communication not only for education but also for career advancement. In general, students find it difficult to understand expressions or sentences in English. The same thing occurs when learning listening comprehension for EFL students in Indonesia. Listening is one of the most difficult skills experienced by students in learning English. The research in this paper aims to investigate the barriers to English listening comprehension of university students in Indonesia and their implications for listening curriculum development. Data were garnered through semi-structured interviews with eight Indonesian higher-education students. The results depict that the barriers experienced by students in listening comprehension include a lack of pronunciation understanding and different accents, a lack of English vocabulary, a lack of voice clarity quality, and difficulty in understanding the speed of pronunciation. To improve listening comprehension, students need to practice listening to audio from native speakers repeatedly, English podcasts, speeches, and inspiring videos via YouTube, English songs, and watching movies. The implications for listening curriculum development were discussed in this paper.

Abstract

The development of technology makes learning media to be interestingly used and makes the material to be easy to understand. An interestingly learning media is infographic media. Infographic media become an effective teaching material in biology learning. Infographic media is closely related to the visual role of hierarchy. Visual hierarchy is one aspect that eases readers to understand information in a structured and systematic manner. The method used in the research is exploratory descriptive. The researcher collected general information related to teaching materials on biology materials and research studies from UIN Alauddin Makassar Biology Education students who used infographic media as teaching materials. Analysis of visual literacy used the theory of visual hierarchy. In terms of visual hierarchy, three teaching material media have been implemented to a good visual hierarchy. The content through a combination of colors, shapes or elements, a good layout, and the selection of created text models becomes contrast. It is because a good understanding of the visual hierarchy can create an infographic that is not only aesthetic but also comfortable for readers to read. Infographic media teaching materials used in viral materials, the phylum Echinodermata, and the digestive system have followed an appropriate visual hierarchy as teaching material media. Of the three infographic media as teaching materials above, of course, they have followed the visual hierarchy.

Abstract

Visual literacy is the skill to interpret and give meaning to information in the form of images or visuals. Visual literacy is included in the list of 21st-century skills. The observation results indicate that most of the students have not mastered visual literacy well. One of the efforts that can be made to improve visual literacy is the provision of appropriate and right teaching materials. The research is an R&D (Research and Development) using a 4-D model, which is modified to 3-D (define, design, develop). The instruments used were content analysis sheets and validation questionnaires. The results of the research imply that there are three characteristics of the validity of the developed module. First, visual literacy produces students’ critical thinking and communication skills by building their own meaning or conclusions regarding the given image object. Second, visual literacy produces students' creative thinking by recreating it in the form of images or other visual objects from the provided visual information. Third, visual literacy produces students' critical thinking skills by connecting visual objects or images that are distributed to them. The module is considered to be very valid (feasible) to use with a percentage of 94.23%.
