Abstract

Fire represents a serious threat, causing global economic losses estimated at 0.05–0.22% of GDP. In Indonesia, fire incidents remain at a high level, with a total of 267 cases recorded in 2023. Beyond economic losses, fires pose significant risks to human safety, particularly in educational environments equipped with laboratories and dormitories. Common causes of fire risks include electrical short circuits, human negligence, high population density, and limited knowledge of fire protection systems. Politeknik Penerbangan Medan, as a vocational education institution with multi-story buildings and laboratory facilities, faces a considerable potential fire hazard. This Community Service (PkM) program aims to provide fire safety education and fire response training, as well as to equip students with the skills to respond effectively to fire emergencies. The methods implemented include educational outreach, pre-tests and post-tests, and hands-on demonstrations on the use of Light Fire Extinguishers (APAR) and fire blankets. A total of 36 students participated in the entire activity. The evaluation results indicated a 58% increase in knowledge, with the average pre-test score of 67 and post-test score of 78, demonstrating a significant improvement in understanding after the training. The average score increase of 11 points further highlights the program’s effectiveness in enhancing participants’ knowledge. Additionally, participants achieved a 93.5% success rate in basic fire extinguishing skills, reflecting their improved preparedness in handling fire risks. Participant satisfaction assessments showed that conducting this activity as an extracurricular program contributed to fostering a safety-conscious culture within the campus environment and served as a model for sustainable fire safety training.

Abstract

Organic waste management is a major challenge in urban areas due to its potential to cause environmental pollution. The cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, commonly known as maggots, was introduced as an alternative solution because of their ability to convert organic waste into valuable products. This community service program was conducted in RW 25 with the aim of improving residents’ knowledge and skills in maggot cultivation through socialization, training, cage construction, starter kit distribution, and regular mentoring. Evaluation through pre-test and post-test indicated an increase in community understanding from 42% to 64%. Furthermore, residents successfully carried out four harvesting cycles with an average yield of 2–4 kg per cycle, which were either used as animal feed or sold to generate additional income. The program proved effective not only in reducing the burden of organic waste but also in fostering a sustainable, community-based circular economy model.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a vital role in driving local and national economic growth, providing employment, and supporting household livelihoods. However, many MSMEs, especially those within the Bluru Bangkit Sidoarjo (BBS) Association, continue to face persistent challenges due to conventional business practices. Manual bookkeeping, non-standardized production processes, and the mixing of personal and business finances often lead to inefficiency, poor decision-making, and low competitiveness. This community service program aims to enhance the competitiveness and independence of BBS MSMEs by introducing production standardization and digital financial management through the FinTrack application. The program employs a combination of training sessions and tailored mentorship to equip MSME members with practical skills in production process management and digital financial operations. The initiative targets 80% adoption of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in production and 75% independent utilization of FinTrack for financial recordkeeping. Early results show that MSME members demonstrate increased confidence, improved accuracy in bookkeeping, and greater consistency in product quality. This program aligns with the National Research Master Plan (RIRN) and supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). In the long term, this initiative is expected to strengthen business independence, foster innovation, and enhance the resilience of local economies through a sustainable Smart Business Community (SBC) model.

Abstract

Waste management is one of the major challenges in various institutions, including in the Ma'had Tafaqquh environment. Lack of awareness of waste in sorting and managing it causes the accumulation of organic and inorganic waste which has a negative impact on the environment. To overcome this problem, the concept of a circular economy through the Digital Waste Bank is present as an innovative solution that integrates environmental education and the use of technology. This program aims to increase awareness of waste management based on the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and encourage economic empowerment by utilizing waste that has a selling value. The activities carried out include education for students and residents of Ma'had Tafaqquh regarding waste management, training in the use of the Digital Waste Bank application, and implementation of an effective waste sorting system. The Digital Waste Bank allows for transparent waste recording and management as well as the provision of economic incentives. It is hoped that the results of this program will not only create a cleaner and healthier environment, but also build a sustainable culture and economic independence in Ma'had Tafaqquh.

Abstract

Stunting remains a persistent nutritional challenge in Indonesia, requiring evidence-based, locally developed food interventions that are both nutritious and appealing to children. This study aimed to develop and assess “Nulte,” a catfish-tempeh nugget formulation, as a sustainable, protein-dense local food innovation to support stunting prevention. Three formulations with varying catfish-to-tempeh ratios (1:1, 2:1, and 1:2) were prepared using standardized community-based procedures. Each product underwent proximate composition testing following AOAC methods, and sensory evaluation using a 5-point hedonic scale by 30 untrained panelists (local mothers and children). Data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA, MANOVA, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to identify the optimal formulation. Formula 2 (2:1) achieved the highest protein content (15.33 g/100 g), the best sensory acceptance (overall 4.2 ± 0.4), and provided up to 76.65 % of daily protein needs for children aged 1–3 years, significantly outperforming other formulas in energy and taste (p < 0.05). PCA results indicated that Formula 2 showed the strongest clustering between nutritional quality and sensory preference dimensions. These findings demonstrate that Nulte nuggets effectively combine animal and plant proteins into a child-friendly, nutrient-dense product. Their simple preparation and use of locally available ingredients make them a promising scalable intervention for community-level stunting prevention in Indonesia.

Abstract

The presence of cattle in Kinali Village provides additional economic value for the community. However, cattle farming activities are still hampered by the availability of feed. Feed can be either fresh feed or silage. The purpose of this PkM program is to provide community understanding about providing cattle feed, both fresh feed and silage. The methods used include dialogue, material development, and lectures. The success of the program was measured by distributing questionnaires both before and after the extension program. The results of the extension showed an increase in public understanding of how to make silage, namely from 9.52% to 90.48% with the criteria of understanding. The importance of this extension program is to ensure the community can provide cattle feed by utilizing the potential available in Kinali Village. This extension is crucial for providing cattle feed that is sufficient in quantity, quality, continuity, and long-lasting. This activity is an effort to improve community welfare.

Abstract

Low learning motivation among elementary school students remains one of the major challenges in education, as it directly affects academic achievement, discipline, and character development. This issue is often reflected in students’ lack of focus, initiative, and active participation during learning activities. Such conditions require interventions that address not only cognitive but also affective and psychological aspects to foster intrinsic motivation. This community service program aimed to enhance students’ learning motivation at SDN X Surakarta through a psychoeducation intervention. The method consisted of four stages: problem identification, intervention design, implementation, and evaluation. Psychoeducation was chosen because it integrates educational and psychological principles through interactive activities that promote self-awareness, responsibility, and intrinsic motivation. The program was implemented on May 10, 2025, involving 36 students from grades 1 to 5. The 45-minute session included an opening, ice breaking, pre-test, delivery of psychoeducational material on the importance of learning, inspirational video viewing, interactive games, post-test, reward distribution, and closing. The effectiveness of the intervention was measured using pretest and posttest assessments based on the presented material to evaluate changes in students’ understanding of learning motivation. The results showed an increase in the average motivation score from 4.667 to 4.917 (p = 0.032), indicating a significant improvement after the intervention. These findings highlight the effectiveness of psychoeducation as a strategy to improve learning motivation among elementary students. More broadly, this program provides valuable implications for schools to integrate psychoeducational activities into learning policies and character development practices to create a more supportive, participatory, and psychologically empowering learning environment.
