Abstract

Working within the tenets of Selasi and Mbembe’s notion of Afropolitanism and Guatarri and Deleuze (1987) concept of a rhizome, this paper interrogates and contextualises the Afropolitan identity as a rhizome. The aim is to deepen the conversation and debate on Afropolitanism as a new way of mapping the African cultural identity in synch with the world at large, while offering a new descriptive vocabulary for it. The examples interrogated in this study are drawn from selected African novels which evince the Afropolitan sensibilities. This is portrayed through rhizomatic characterisation. This study is also in conversation with Ede’s notion of "rhizomatic existence". This paper stresses that the rhizomatic features of the Afropolitan identity portrays the Afropolitan as an individual with transnational affiliations whose identity cannot be pinned in absolute sense to a single cultural geography. Importantly, the prefix “Afro”, in Afropolitanism suggests that Afropolitanism privileges Africanness while the cultural fusion which cosmopolitanism engendered in Africa’s metropole and beyond is the fulcrum upon which the idea of Afropolitanism is drawn from.

Abstract

The context of the so-called “crisis of the humanities” is further tested against the backdrop of the COVID-9 pandemic crisis. Compounding variations or nuances of this premise infer that the crisis is true, which means that there is a lessening emphasis on the humanities. There is, however, a need to justify how this argument can stand on itself through an inquiry of its validity. The descriptive nature of its claim further begs the presupposition that a crisis is such because of an apparent disparity of the humanities and the sciences stemming from various charges. This paper thus takes over from this problem and utilizes the logical formal proofs of language to assess the underlying assertions being made. It carries on its tasks through a steady establishment of valid proofs that ground the very nature of the crisis.

Abstract

Conversation, as a complex activity, requires some set of rules to be guided and worked cooperatively. However, violating the rules to create implications in some situations is a powerful and creative way to get across a point. This study attempts to discover the most dominant maxim violation in a Javanese song entitled Slénco by applying a qualitative approach. The data source is taken from the Internet in the form of dialogue manifested via musical communication, which violated Cooperative Principles of Maxims. To conduct this study, three steps were taken: Copying the song lyrics and translating them into English; categorizing them into different types of maxims violation; analysing them based on the violation of each maxim; and then concluded the reasons why the lyricists violated the Cooperative Principle of maxims in their utterances. The findings of the study showed that all types of maxims were violated: eight utterances on the maxim of quantity, three utterances on the maxim of quality, 11 utterances on the maxim of relations, and eight utterances on the maxim of manners. These violations of maxims portray the reality of dyslexia sufferers who are problematic in conversational exchanges and make the lyrics sound funny as a form of art in indirect communications.

Abstract

Grammar competence as an essential part in learning language has to be mastered by every language learner. Students, especially in higher education, need to possess the knowledge of grammar rules to produce academic products that maintain the grammatical aspects in every task. A new notion in learning grammar by employing grammar learning strategies becomes an alternative way for students in mastering grammar. Since many students are not aware of grammar learning strategies, the need to conduct strategies training in the classroom context is a solution. Empowered by styles and strategies-based instruction, this study aimed to determine the effect of grammar learning strategies on the grammatical competence of second semester students of Universitas Muslim Indonesia. Quasi-experimental design under quantitative research consisting of pre-test, eight meetings of treatment, and post-test was employed to compare the groups’ performance in grammar test. The data were obtained by using two kinds of research instruments: grammar test and questionnaire. In analyzing the data, this study employed the independent sample t-test and frequency of questionnaire. The result of statistical analysis showed that independent t-test which compared the students’ score on post-test revealed a value of p>0.05. It means that there was no significant difference between students taught with and without grammar learning strategies. The result yields some implications of having grammar learning strategies in classroom context. The students’ personal traits and experiences put some influences on the effect of strategies training. The duration of training also put contribution toward the students’ skills in employing the appropriate strategies in solving grammar problems.
