Abstract

This study is a corpus-based study that aims to find out the use of words in Gardner and Davies' (2014) Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) in Undergraduate Theses in the field of English Education. A 2.2 million-word called undergraduate theses corpus was created in this study. The corpus consists of 200 undergraduate theses compiled from 10 Universities in Indonesia. The result shows that AVL words account for 24.79% of the entire education undergraduate theses, which contained 557,658 running words. AVL contains 3,015 core academic words (lemmas). Based on word frequency criteria, this study found 573-word forms and 871 lemmas, which coverage 31.48% of the whole Gardner and Davies' AVL that occur at least 63 times in the entire corpus and the word has to occur at least five times in five universities. The finding shows that AVL is effective for the students in writing undergraduate theses. However some of the words that are closely related to the English Education field are not found in the AVL, therefore an attempt to develop a new academic vocabulary specific to the English Education field is needed.

Moreover, in this theory, Anceaux proposed and devided the morphological system based on the class of words. One same prefix is possible to make a different class of wordswhen it is attached to a verb or a noun. Anceaux classified the morphem based on the stem attached to verb or noun. Nevertheless, the data in Kabanti Nuru Molabi shows that suffix –na, to form a possessive, and suffix –mo to form demonstrative or affirmation are not covered in Anceaux.

Abstract

Literature from across academic disciplines has demonstrated significant links between emotional valence and language. For example, Whissell’s Dictionary of Affect in Language defines three dimensions upon which the emotionality of words is describable, and Ekman’s Theories of Emotion include the perception and internalization of facial expressions. The present study seeks to expand upon these works by exploring whether holding facial expressions alters the fundamental speech properties of spoken language. Nineteen (19) participants were seated in a soundproof chamber and were asked to speak a series of pseudowords containing target phonemes. The participants spoke the pseudowords either holding no facial expression, smiling, or frowning, and the utterances recorded using a high-definition microphone and phonologically analyzed using PRAAT analysis software. Analyses revealed a pervasive gender differences in frequency variables, where males showed lower fundamental but higher formant frequencies compared to females. Significant main effects were found within the fundamental and formant frequencies, but no effects were discerned for the intensity variable. While intricate, these results are indicative of an interaction between the activity of facial musculature when reflecting emotional valence and the sound properties of speech uttered simultaneously.

Abstract

Parenting is a necessary component of human development. It assists children in developing the competencies necessary to function in and face society as adults. A good parenting approach would assist the child in functioning optimally in the society; on the other hand, a poor parenting practice would increase the child's susceptibility to negative behavior and ultimately ruin the child's future. This paper aims to demonstrate Dahl's portrayal of parenting styles and their effect on children’s behavior in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The study was performed using the psychology of literature approach, with Baumrind's parenting framework serving as the underlying theory. The finding demonstrates that parental parenting styles serve as the "mold" for children's actions as portrayed by the characters in the story. (1)Permissive parenting, as demonstrated by Veruca Salt and Augustus Gloob, (2)Authoritarian parenting, as demonstrated by Violet Beauregarde, (3)Uninvolved/ Neglectful parenting, as demonstrated by Mike Teavee, and (4)Authoritative parenting, as demonstrated by Charlie Bucket, the main protagonist.

Abstract

Considering the significant role of learner autonomy and internal locus of control in language learning process, the present study attempted to investigate the correlation between EFL learners’ autonomy and internal locus of control. To achieve such aim, a sample of 95 Iranian EFL learners both male (n=33) and female (n=62) participated in this study. The instruments used in the present study were learner autonomy questionnaire (Learner Autonomy Perception Questionnaire) and internal locus of control questionnaire (Internal Locus of Control Index). The findings indicated a significant positive correlation among EFL learners’ autonomy and their internal locus of control. Moreover, this study highlights the importance of learner autonomy and internal locus of control in the foreign language learning and also aims to raise EFL teachers’ awareness of the importance of these two key factors in the EFL context. The suggestions related to the findings of the current study are discussed at the end of study.
