Abstract

This paper investigates the use of conceptual metaphors in the Farewell Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) using the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). Drawing from discourse analysis and cognitive linguistics, the study categorizes metaphors into structural, ontological, and orientation types, revealing how abstract theological and moral concepts are conveyed through culturally grounded metaphors. The findings highlight the cognitive strategies embedded in prophetic discourse and their enduring rhetorical power. The study contributes to both metaphor research and Islamic linguistic heritage by offering a deeper understanding of how abstract Islamic teachings are made accessible and memorable through metaphor. This research bridges cognitive linguistics and Islamic studies by analyzing how abstract moral and theological concepts are conveyed metaphorically. It contributes to understanding how religious discourse uses metaphor to make abstract principles tangible and relatable, reinforcing moral and spiritual instruction. Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), introduced by (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), proposes that metaphor is not just a figure of speech but a fundamental mechanism of human cognition. Metaphors map concepts from a familiar source domain to a more abstract target domain, shaping thought, language, and behavior.

Abstract

This study explores preschool teachers’ self-efficacy in teaching phonics to young learners in a bilingual early childhood setting in Makassar, Indonesia. Although phonics is a widely supported approach to early reading, its application across Indonesian preschools remains inconsistent, especially outside English-based programs. This research aims to examine how teachers perceive their self-efficacy in phonics instruction and understand how these beliefs influence classroom implementation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, involving three preschool teachers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. The analysis was guided by Tschannen-Moran and Hoy’s (2001) framework covering instructional strategies, classroom management, and student engagement. Findings revealed that the participants demonstrated high or moderate-to-high self-efficacy in adapting phonics strategies, managing classroom behavior, and engaging students. Classroom observations largely confirmed alignment between teachers’ stated beliefs and their instructional practices. The study concludes that teacher self-efficacy significantly affects the quality and consistency of phonics instruction. It recommends that schools support teacher development through reflective practice, peer observation, and accessible teaching resources to improve early literacy outcomes.

Abstract

Many (EFL) frequently encounter difficulties in developing their speaking abilities, frequently because of restricted chances for practice and the lack of of interactive activities in the classroom. This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Dixit board game in enhancing the speaking abilities of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 9 Palu through a quasi-experimental design. The study included two groups: class XI MIA 2, which acted as the experimental group, and class XI MIA 1, which served as the control group, both selected through purposive sampling. A speaking test was employed as the research instrument, focusing on three main criteria: fluency, accuracy, and comprehensibility. Both groups underwent a pre-test and a post-test, with the experimental group participating in six treatment sessions using the Dixit board game. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25. The results indicated that the average score of the experimental group increased from 54.46 to 76.46, while the control group’s score rose from 49.10 to 59.20. The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed normal distribution of the data, and Levene’s Test indicated equal variances (p = 0.610 > 0.05). A paired sample t-test demonstrated a significant improvement in the experimental group (p = 0.000 < 0.05), and an independent sample t-test revealed a significant difference in post-test scores between the two groups (p = 0.000 < 0.05). These findings suggest that utilizing the Dixit board game significantly enhances students’ speaking skills and supports its use as an interactive and student-centered tool in EFL speaking instruction.

Abstract

Kokoro novel by Natsume Soseki depicts the emotional struggle and loneliness of its characters amidst the pressure of Japan's socio-cultural transformation in the Meiji era, namely the shift from tradition to modernity. The characters' deep sadness is often expressed through the style of personification, making inanimate objects and natural atmospheres seem to have feelings, as a stylistic reflection rich in meaning. This study aims to identify the forms and imagery of personification that reflect the sadness of the main character and analyze the relationship between personification and the socio-cultural context of the Meiji era as a form of response to modernization. The study uses a cognitive stylistic approach (based on Lakoff & Johnson) and a sociocultural approach to see the relationship between language style and the context of changes in community values. The descriptive-qualitative method is carried out through the identification of personification quotes, classification of types, and interpretation of emotional meaning and its relationship to socio-cultural phenomena. The results of the study show that personification appears in nature (wind, sky, rain, fog) and the city atmosphere which emphasizes sadness and alienation. Personification also serves as a medium for emotional expression of characters as well as a subtle critique of socio-cultural turmoil, showing how language constructs and voices emotions in a particular historical context. Through the personification of objects and atmosphere, Natsume Soseki conveys sadness, isolation and anxiety in a society caught in the current of modernization.

Abstract

This study investigates the ideological contestations embedded in public discourse regarding the West Java Governor’s policy on character education in military barracks. Adopting Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, data were collected from eleven public figures representing diverse institutional backgrounds, whose statements were disseminated through major Indonesian online media outlets (Kompas, Detik, Tempo, NU-Online, Gesuri.id, CNN Indonesia, Liputan6) and YouTube. The findings reveal that pro-policy discourse predominantly employed legitimizing diction, affirmative modalities, and metaphors that framed military barracks as spaces for discipline and nation-building. Conversely, counter-discourse highlighted risks of child rights violations, psychological harm, and incompatibility with inclusive and holistic educational principles. These opposing discourses demonstrate intertextual practices ranging from legal references to cultural values, while also reflecting broader ideological struggles between state-driven discipline-oriented education and civil society’s advocacy for democratic, child-centered learning. The study contributes to CDA scholarship by extending its application to the underexplored domain of military-based character education in Indonesia and offers insights into how power and ideology shape the trajectory of educational policy debates.

Abstract

This study explores the symbolic meanings of Toraja mortuary practices and their relationship to belief systems and social hierarchy. Drawing on ethnographic methods—participant observation of funeral ceremonies, semi-structured interviews, oral-tradition documentation, and archival research—the research examines burial forms at the Sillanan site in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi. The findings reveal that Toraja burials, including Liang Sillik, Liang Erong, Liang Tokek, Liang Pak, and Patane, along with coffin types (erong) shaped as rectangles, buffalo, or boats, reflect a megalithic belief system that emphasizes the powerful influence of ancestral spirits on human welfare. These practices also encode social stratification: lower social groups were interred in simpler caves, while high-ranking nobles used elaborately carved boat- or buffalo-shaped coffins placed in elevated locations. The mortuary system illustrates a worldview in which life and death form a continuous cycle, where the spirit world (puya) mirrors earthly society. For archaeology, the ethnographic data provide an important analog for interpreting material remains, offering insights into the ideological and social frameworks that inform the creation, use, and deposition of artifacts. This research highlights how Toraja burial technology and rituals embody enduring connections between the living and the dead, as well as between belief, social order, and material culture.

Abstract

Literary works usually show personal and social struggles that mirror the complexities of human life. An example of this is the Jayyibat al-Eid series, which shows how the characters Razan and Sameer face challenges from cultural differences, family expectations, and their own wishes. This study aims to find out and describe the types of psychological conflict that Razan and Sameer face and to examine the ways they use ego defense mechanisms to deal with these struggles. The problems they face are examined using Kurt Lewin's theory of psychological conflict and Sigmund Freud's idea of ego defense mechanisms. The method used is is descriptive qualitative with observation and note-taking techniques, through dialogue, monologue, and the characters' actions that reveal the dynamics of inner conflict. The result shows that there are three main types of conflict: approach–approach conflict, avoidance–avoidance conflict, and approach–avoidance conflict. To handle these conflicts, the characters use different defense mechanisms like rationalization, reaction formation, denial, and repression. These strategies help them feel less anxious and keep their self-esteem intact. These results show that the emotional struggles in stories not only highlight how complex the characters are but also mirror the social and cultural situations that affect people's lives.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of luxury culture in Omar Naim’s film Route 10 using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research aims to reveal how luxury objects and fashion function not merely as literal signs but as symbols of social hierarchy, prestige, and cultural adaptation. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, selected dialogues and scenes are analyzed to uncover denotative and connotative meanings embedded in both narrative and visual elements. The findings indicate that luxury is depicted through icons such as branded cars, high-heeled shoes, and premium bags, representing elite status and global prestige. Indexes, including personal assistants, palatial residences, and exclusive privileges, highlight social hierarchies and structural inequalities. Symbols, such as formal attire, wedding gowns, and the fusion of religious tradition with modernity, reflect both aspirational and contradictory aspects of elite culture, including elitism, hypocrisy, and social distinction. Overall, the film presents luxury as a phenomenon that functions both as a marker of prestige and a source of social tension, illustrating how material and symbolic representations of wealth influence perceptions of identity, status, and cultural values in contemporary Arab society.
