Abstract

Curriculum revisions are nothing new in Indonesia. Three curricular revisions have occurred throughout last two decades. Finally, the post-Covid-19 emergency curriculum was changed to Independent Curriculum, which purportedly streamlines K13. Merdeka Curriculum is only one year old, of course it still requires adjustments, especially in implementation. For this reason, researchers decided to examine teachers' perceptions (as the front guard of education) regarding the Independent Curriculum which focuses on implementation in teaching English at junior high school level in Banjar Regency, including regarding obstacles in implementation. This research uses descriptive qualitative with interviews as the data collection method. The type of interview used was semi-unstructured in-depth interview with 7 English teachers in 4 Junior High Schools in different sub-districts in Banjar District which implemented Merdeka Curriculum as respondents, determined using purposive sampling method. Following the investigation, respondents acquired 9 positive and 8 negative perceptions. According to the teacher's perception, Independent Curriculum has evolved to the times with usage of digital media/internet as a learning ied, making learning resources more abundant, there are also fun projects students can do, Aside from that, this curriculum is thought to be more supportive of students by using terms like student center, positive discipline, and differentiation approach, which allows teachers to provide more opportunities for students develop themselves by understanding them personally and providing comfortable environment. The obstacles encountered are mostly related to the facilities, teacher readiness, and increasingly limited time due to large number of tasks that teachers must complete as result of this curriculum..

Abstract

This research analyzes “Wolf Gold’ group chat using a sociolingustics gender language difference by Lakoff and Coates Theory. The researchers uses a qualitative descriptive method and presented with tables. The author found out that in Lakoff’s features in women’s language include hedges, tag questions, empty adjectives, intensifiers, superpolite forms, and avoidance of strong swear words. In men’s language, based on Coates’ theory, swearing, commands, declaratives, and interruptions were observed. While women used most of Lakoff’s features, some were absent due to the chat’s context. Men mostly used swearing, but both genders showed overlap in using features from the opposite theory, highlighting inconsistencies in applying Lakoff’s and Coates’ theories across different gender. The theories of Lakoff and Coates show inconsistencies, as features of men’s language appear in women’s speech and vice versa.

Abstract

This study examines derivational and inflectional affixation in the article “How Wildfires Are Changing the Face of Mediterranean Landscapes.” Morphology, a field of linguistics, studies how words are formed and how morphemes create new meanings and grammatical structures. This study identifies and analyzes the types and patterns of affixes in the article and their role in meaning and grammar. By using qualitative methods, 53 derivational affixes and 76 inflectional affixes were found. Derivational affixes, such as prefixes (re-, un-) and suffixes (-ion, -ly), often change the word class, thus expanding the vocabulary. Inflectional affixes, such as -s, -ed and -ing, provide grammatical details without changing the core meaning of the word. Inflectional affixes appear more frequently in articles, showing their importance in grammar, while derivational affixes add depth and variety. This study highlights how affixation helps convey scientific and narrative information effectively. This research contributes to linguistic research and offers insights for writers and editors in creating clear and engaging content.

The primary objective was to identify the challenges these Indonesian SEA Teacher awardees encountered and the strategies they employed to mitigate these challenges, considering the differing statuses of English in Indonesia (as an EFL context) and the Philippines (as an ESL context). The research utilized a g inquiry approach, complemented by semi-structured interviews, to gather qualitative data. The participants comprised four pre-service teachers who successfully completed the SEA Teacher international teaching practice program in 2023, which spanned one month. The findings reveal several challenges faced by the participants, including issues related to self-confidence, language barriers, the educational system, and the availability of facilities. The study underscores the importance of thorough preparation, adaptability, and mentor support in overcoming these obstacles and enhancing teaching practices.

Abstract

This research looks at the morphological elements of Katy Perry's Prism album lyrics, focusing on derivational and inflectional morphemes. Morphology is a branch of linguistics that focuses on the role of morphemes in language and examines the structure, meaning, and creation of words. With 33 occurrences, the most common derivational suffix, according to the data, is -ing. -ly (8 instances), un- (4), -y (3), and -er (2) come after it. Less frequent suffixes, such -ary, -ity, and others, only occur once each. The most frequent prefix is un-, which appears six times, while in-(2) and uni-(1) are less frequent. The most frequent inflectional morphemes are plural forms and past participles, which occur 18 times each, showing how important they are in showing multiplicity and completed actions. Comparative degrees appear 6 times, and the past tense is used 7 times, further indicating the richness of grammatical forms that the album expresses. The results reveal the linguistic diversity of PRISM's song lyrics, which deliver the messages of relationships, self-determination, and living in the present through a harmony of derivational and inflectional processes. This research contributes to our understanding of how morphological elements enhance the literary works and promote vocabulary acquisition through song lyrics.

Abstract

This study attempts to map undergraduate students’ writing self-efficacy and writing self-regulated learning strategies in the process of writing their undergraduate thesis. This survey study was conducted in Thesis Proposal Writing coursework in a private university in academic year 2022/2023. Eighty-six students agreed to participate in this study by filling out a questionnaire, and eight students were interviewed to obtain more information about their responses to the questionnaire. The findings indicate that the students’ writing self-efficacy were categorized into medium (M=4,7872, SD=1,138), which means they believe either maybe or basically can do the writing ability stated in the items. They were relatively more efficacious in the use of English writing (M=4,936, SD=1,199), but less efficacious in grammar and spelling (M=4,69, SD=1,062). In terms of writing self-regulated strategies, most students sometimes used writing self-regulated strategies; the most frequently used SRL strategies were self-consequences strategies (M=2,41; SD=0,641) and self-evaluation strategies (M=2,35; SD=0,693) while the least frequently used strategies were self-monitoring strategies (M=1,755, SD=0,793). From these findings, the author suggests that students should be supported to enhance their writing self-efficacy and self-regulated learning strategies by providing more cohesive and coherent written corrective feedback. By doing so, they will be more efficacious in terms of ideation, organization, grammar, and spelling in writing their undergraduate thesis. It will also enhance their behavioral self-regulated learning strategies in the domain of self-monitoring strategies

Abstract

This qualitative generative syntactic study aims to discuss the forms of nominal structures and their basic patterns of a Sasak story written in 1992 published in the book “Dewi Rengganis” by applying the X-bar theory to discuss the constituent structure of nominal constructions and answering the question of whether nominal structures should be analyzed as determiner phrases or noun phrases. The result of the study shows in this language the determiners  like ni  ‘this’, and no ‘that’ and possessives like the suffix –na are the head that takes the noun phrase as its complement where the typical order consists of a demonstrative or articles precedes a noun, or demonstrative after the noun.
