Abstract

Metaphor is a figurative language often found in literary works, especially novels. It contains unique cultural elements, which makes metaphor hard to understand and translate. This study examines the strategy of translating metaphors in The Ballad of Never After novel from English into Indonesian. Data were analyzed using the qualitative descriptive method completed with the theory by Newmark (1988) regarding translation strategies of metaphor. This study revealed that from the 96 data obtained, seven translation strategies of metaphor were used by translators to convey the meaning of the metaphors in the novel from English to Indonesian and reproducing the Same Image in the Target Language is the most frequently used strategy. In contrast, the least used strategy is Changing the Metaphor by Simile Combined with Sense and Deleting. It indicates that English and Indonesian share many metaphorical images with similar meanings. It causes translators being more flexible in reproducing metaphors in the target language, considering cultural similarities and the circumstances in which metaphors are expressed.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the ideology of Al-Jazeera media and the social conditions that influence it through reporting on Muhammad bin Salman and the Saudi Vision 2030 on the Al-Jazeera Arabic news site. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this research were analyzed using the Fairclough discourse analysis model. At the level of text analysis, the results of the study show that Al-Jazeera uses sharp and firm diction, namely by using phrases meaning “taukid” (strengthening), “laa” and “lam nafiyah” particles, sentences meaning “tasybih” (similarity) which have bad connotations, bad idioms, metaphorical expressions to show evil, causality to explain a situation, and the use of negative diction. At the level of discursive practice, Al-Jazeera creates news according to its target audience in the Middle East and Africa. At the sociocultural level, Al-Jazeera has an ideology, namely, representing the unrest of Middle Eastern society with the slogan, “The opinion and the other opinion.” Besides that, socio-political conditions in the Middle East and diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Qatar influence Al-Jazeera in producing discourse about Saudi Arabia, especially Saudi Vision 2030.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need for innovation in the learning process in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era. This research aims to determine the impact of the quick write (QW) strategy assisted by animation media on the ability to write persuasive texts for class VIII students. This research implemented a pretest-posttest control group design involving students from SMP Negeri 5 Pontianak. Students were divided into two groups consisting of 64 students selected through cluster random sampling. The instrument consists of essay questions in the form of a pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using the t-test and the results showed that 1) students who were treated with the QW strategy assisted by animation media showed a significant increase in their ability to write persuasive texts, and 2) the QW strategy assisted by animation media contributed to student independence in learning to write, students were active and able to highlight the argument process quickly and responsively related to actual problems with the linguistic skills they have. These findings show that students who use the QW strategy assisted by animation media have a better improvement in their ability to write persuasive texts than students who use direct learning.

Abstract

In the creation of literary works, the author will always be influenced by the spirit of the times (Zeitgeist) that existed during the writing process. Sitti Nurbaya: Kasih Tak Sampai, a novel by Marah Rusli, is one of the literary works that is close to Minangkabau culture. It was first published in 1922 by Balai Pustaka. Balai Pustaka established strict regulations in publishing reading materials for people in the Dutch East Indies to stem the nationalism of indigenous peoples. This research aims to find the strategies used by Marah Rusli to convey the anticolonial discourse contained in the work. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method with the sociology of literature approach and Stuart Hall’s concept of representation. The results that the researcher found in this study are the anticolonial traces conveyed by Marah Rusli using various strategies to escape the censorship of Balai Pustaka, namely (1) the construction of youth figures representing the modernity of the Dutch colonial government and the elderly representing the traditionality of indigenous people; (2) the portrayal of anticolonial attitudes through antagonistic characters; and (3) the use of the year of Hijri to deceive the Dutch colonial government.

Abstract

Awareness of the importance of natural harmony as an ecosystem for human life has become an important topic to study. The phenomenon of natural damage triggers this condition due to the actions of unscrupulous people in the community. Forest clearing for industrial purposes is one of the triggers. Apart from that, the increasingly complicated management of plastic waste due to a lack of public education about this impact also triggers the destruction of natural balance. Therefore, through this article, the researcher attempts to link this paradigm with the message conveyed through the novel Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak (after this DKBC) by Ahmad Tohari. The method used in preparing this article is genetic structuralism with a literary sociology approach. The results of the research show that based on the story structure found, the author's worldview about the importance of maintaining natural harmony is embedded in the story being told. This view also shows that the harmonization and harmony of nature is an important foundation for Indonesia's golden generation. Therefore, the author's worldview can be an important pillar as an alternative environmental education material delivered through school education.

Abstract

This research explores the theoretical aspects of implementing the pragmatic approach in learning speaking skills/kaiwa, as outlined in Minna No Nihongo 1's book. The pragmatic approach is a learning approach to improve students' speaking/kaiwa skills in the classroom, prioritizing contextualized learning of speaking skills. This emphasis on context becomes particularly significant throughout the learning process. By employing this approach, students, including those in secondary schools and universities, can closely simulate practical speaking conditions, both verbally and in written form. The method used is qualitative descriptive with purposive sampling. Therefore, applying the pragmatic approach has proven effective in promoting active learning, significantly improving students' speaking skills inside and outside the classroom. The Japanese language learning process should be designed to meet practical language needs that correspond to real-world situations. By incorporating patterns based on pragmatic studies, learners undergoing Japanese learning experiences will naturally connect with the practical aspects of communication in the language learning process.

Abstract

Mantra is an oral tradition that is believed to have mystical powers that can generate forces beyond human comprehension, such as the dhanyang mageri omah mantra practiced in Pagak Hamlet, Cengkok Village, Ngronggot Subdistrict, Nganjuk Regency. The dhanyang Mantra mageri omah is an oral tradition with mystical power, employed to protect homes with the assistance of supernatural beings khown as dhanyang. This research aims to analyze the phonological, morphology, syntax, and function aspects of the Dhanyang Mantra. This study's phonological, morphological, and syntactic analysis was conducted using a descriptive-qualitative approach and observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Findings reveal that the Dhanyang Mantra demonstrates a harmonious blend of phonological elements (such as alliteration, assonance, and imperfect rhyme), morphological (such as free and bound morpheme), and syntactic structures (types of sentences), adhering to principles of structural analysis. Functionally, the dhanyang mantra serves as a conduit for communication with supernatural entities and as an intermediary connecting humans, God, the Prophet Muhammad, and dhanyang spirits. The religious and cultural significance embedded within the dhanyang mantra reinforces the belief of Pagak Hamlet's inhabitants in the protective capabilities of dhanyang. This research contributes to comprehending and preserving cultural heritage and indigenous wisdom within local religious practices.

Abstract

This study focuses on the linguistic landscape in public transportation places in Sidoarjo Regency. It aims to analyze the use and function of language on signs at Sidoarjo Train Station, Waru Train Station, Purabaya Bus Station, Larangan Bus Station, and Juanda Airport. According to Spolsky and Cooper's theoretical framework, signs are classified based on various criteria forming language taxonomy on signs. The data collection was conducted using observation and interviews. The interview was conducted with one person (passenger) at each location and the observation lasted for four days for all locations, followed by data integration and analysis. The study identified 94 signs, including 62 monolingual (Indonesian and English) and 32 bilingual (Indonesian-English) signs functioning as prohibition, warning, labeling, direction, and information. The findings found the diverse linguistic landscape in the public transportation places in Sidoarjo Regency, which had an impact on communication and navigation for both domestic and foreign passengers. Furthermore, for future research, the researchers suggest using mixed methods for analysis and addressing specific areas, particularly enhancing the clarity and visibility of prohibition signs for passenger safety.
