Abstract

Liquid waste generated from the distillation process of lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus L.) in a relatively short time will cause a foul odor, ammonia or phosphine that occurs due to the fermentation process. These problems can be minimized by reusing liquid waste of lemongrass (C. nardus L.) into biolarvicides. This study aims to determine the value of Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50) from the liquid waste of lemongrass (C. nardus L.) which can kill the third instar larvae of A. aegypti mosquitoes for 24 hours. The liquid waste of lemongrass (C. nardus L.) used in this study is waste obtained from the lemongrass (C. nardus L.) distillery located on Jalan Masjid Ulayat, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. A total of 10 mosquito larvae of A. aegypti instar III were used for each different concentration of 6,982%, 7,607%, 8,287%, 9,027% and 9,833%. Each concentration consisted of five repetitions and was observed for 24 hours. After 24 hours, larvae that died were analyzed using probit analysis via SPSS 25. The results showed that the LC50 of lemongrass (C. nardus L.) liquid waste can kill larvae for 24 hours was 8,763%.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in students' argumentation skills in learning biology on the subject matter of the respiratory system through a scientific approach. This research was conducted in class XII SMA in Way Kanan Regency, Lampung Province with an ex post facto design. The sampling technique used in this study was stratified random sampling with the determination of research subjects at SMAN 1 Baradatu which was accredited A, SMAN 2 Buay Bahuga was accredited B and MA Miftahul Ulum Way Tuba which was accredited C. Data collection instruments consisted of argumentation skill tests, interviews, study documentation and questionnaires. The argumentation skill data were analyzed with the help of Excel, hypothesis testing was carried out with one-way ANOVA and LSD test, interview data and learning documents were analyzed descriptively qualitatively with the Miles and Huberman model and questionnaire data were analyzed descriptively in percentage form. The results showed that there was a significant difference in argumentation skill among high school students with accreditation of A, B and C (sig. < 0.05). The average argumentation skill of students from A-accredited high schools was higher than B and C accredited high schools, but the average value of the three schools was very low. Students from A, B and C accredited high schools could make claims well, but had not been able to provide grounds, warrants and backings that are relevant to the claim. This was because students wer not used to working on argumentation questions and teachers had not optimized learning activities with a scientific approach.

Abstract

One of the natural ingredients that is often developed as an antibacterial product is the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). However, scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of the antibacterial compounds contained in dates needs to be evaluated, considering that several previous studies have reported that dates are more dominant as antioxidants than as antibacterials. Therefore, it is necessary to reevaluate the antibacterial ability of the methanolic extract of the sukkari variety date palm against the three test bacteria that cause acne, namely P. acnes, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. This research aimed to determine the sensitivity of the three bacteria tested in response to the methanol extract of the sukkari dates. This research design is experimental. The samples tested were sukkari and the tested bacteria were P. acnes, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Dates were extracted by maceration method and made in concentrations of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90%. Positive control was chloramphenicol antibiotic while negative control was sterile distilled water. All treatments including control (+) and (-) were given to the test bacteria using the Kirby Baeur method to see the diameter of the zone of inhibition of the test bacteria growth. The data was processed in tabular form and compared with the 2016 CLSI standard to see the sensitivity response of the test bacteria. Results of this research is the sukkari dates extract with concentrations of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% was able to inhibit the growth of P. acnes, S. epidermidis and S. aureus bacteria with an interval of 7.0-10.0 mm in diameter of the zone of inhibition. All the tested bacteria showed a sensitivity response in the resistant category, so the sukkari dates fruit extract is not the main choice to be developed as a natural anti-acne product.

Abstract

Pseudomonas sp. can degrade plastics because it has an inducible operon system that produces certain enzymes (esterase, serine, hydrolase, and lipase) in the process of carbon source metabolism. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of Pseudomonas sp. as a plastic biodegradation agent. This research method is a systematic literature review which is carried out by collecting, understanding, analyzing and concluding as many as 30 national and international journal articles published from 2008 to 2022 from several search engines such as Google Scholar, Ncbi, Sinta, and Plos one with the keywords degrading microorganisms plastic. The steps of this research were made samples to be used, tested samples with bacterial isolation, filtered the bacteria, bacterial bacteria and biodegradation within a specified time period by looking at the % loss of plastic before treatment. The results of the literature review analysis showed that Pseudomonas sp. able to degrade plastic around 2-19% by utilizing plastic as a carbon source which will convert addition and condensation polymers into simple molecules such as monomers, dimers and oligomers during the inventory period within 1-3 months. Thus, the microorganisms in the form of Pseudomonas sp. can decompose plastic waste naturally and faster than other methods and does not cause adverse effects.
