Abstract

The agricultural sector is vital in national economic development and the large contribution of farmer groups in increasing the effectiveness of farming businesses. However, the performance of farmer groups is still influenced by various factors, such as the quality of mentoring, farmer characteristics, and farmer motivation, which are not fully understood in depth, especially in Pitu Riawa District, Sidrap Regency. Therefore, this research aims to was to examine how assistance quality, farmer characteristics, and farmer motivation impact the performance of farmer groups in Pitu Riawa District, Sidrap South Sulawesi. The sampling method employed in this research was non-probability sampling using saturated sampling, which involved all farmers in 300 farmer groups from Pitu Riawa sub-district, Sidrap district. Data for this study were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using Partial Least Square (PLS) software. The findings revealed that both the quality of assistants and farmer characteristics had a positive and significant influence on farmer motivation. Additionally, the quality of assistants and farmer characteristics also had a positive and significant impact on farmer group performance. However, farmer motivation only had a positive but insignificant effect on performance. Furthermore, the quality of assistants positively and significantly influenced farmer group performance through farmer motivation, whereas farmer characteristics had a positive but insignificant effect on farmer group performance through farmer motivation. The implications of the results of this study indicate that improving the quality of assistants and strengthening farmer characteristics are the main keys in encouraging farmer motivation and improving farmer group performance. Hence, it is recommended that farmer empowerment programs focus more on improving the competence of facilitators and developing the capacity of farmers through continuous training and coaching.

Abstract

Corporate farming enhances agricultural efficiency and productivity, boosting sectoral competitiveness. Despite the Indonesian government’s efforts to establish corporate farming in multiple districts, the outcomes have fallen short of expectations. This study investigates factors influencing farmers’ decisions to adopt corporate farming and its effects on improving farmers' human resource (HR) performance. Key factors analyzed include support from farmer groups (Poktan), government, social networks, partnerships with the Business and Industrial World (DUDI), and initiator roles. Using data from 142 farmers in Temanggung and Wonosobo districts, collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed with SEM via SmartPLS 3.0, the study reveals that farmer decisions to adopt corporate farming are significantly influenced by Poktan support, government support, social support, and the initiator role. However, these decisions have no significant impact on HR performance. On the other hand, Poktan support, government support, and partnerships with DUDI directly enhance HR performance. To promote corporate farming, the study emphasizes the importance of strengthening Poktan, government, and social supports, alongside initiator roles. Furthermore, corporate farming activities require support from a highly skilled farmer workforce. The study also highlights the role of external factors, like DUDI partnerships, in improving HR performance. By integrating variables from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) into the agricultural sector, this study enriches the literature on corporate farming adoption and its impact on HR performance.

Abstract

This study examines the determinants of Indonesia’s seaweed exports to several destination countries, including Chile, China, Denmark, Japan, Spain, and the United States, using panel data regression analysis. The results reveal that export volume is influenced by various factors, such as import prices, population size, per capita income of the importing countries, and non-tariff measures, specifically Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT). Import prices, GDP per capita, and the implementation of SPS and TBT measures are found to negatively affect Indonesia’s seaweed export volume. In contrast, population growth in the importing countries has a positive and significant impact. Key challenges hindering Indonesia’s seaweed exports include stringent SPS requirements, food safety regulations, and product rejections due to contamination and non-compliance with import standards. To enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian seaweed in the global market, it is essential to improve product quality, ensure compliance with international standards, foster technological innovation, and provide targeted support to exporters.

Abstract

The growing number of university graduates in Malang, Indonesia, is not matched by the availability of formal job opportunities, encouraging many individuals to pursue entrepreneurship as a feasible career choice. Within the agribusiness sector, this opportunity remains largely untapped despite the abundance of local resources and market opportunities. The objective of this research is to examine how entrepreneurship motivation and self-efficacy affect the intention to become entrepreneurs among Agribusiness students at Brawijaya University. The research was conducted between October and December 2024 using a quantitative approach. Data were obtained from 80 active students with entrepreneurial experience using a structured questionnaire based on a Likert scale. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The results reveal that both entrepreneurship motivation and self-efficacy have a significant and positive influence on entrepreneurial intention, with an R-squared value of 0.637. This implies that 63.7% of the variance in entrepreneurial intention is explained by the two independent variables. The most influential factor within entrepreneurship motivation is the influence of social conditions, while the strongest indicator of self efficacy is the belief in achieving business goals. These results suggest that a combination of strong internal drive and self-confidence is essential in fostering entrepreneurial behavior among students. The implication of this study is the need for universities to strengthen entrepreneurship programs by integrating real-world experiences, mentoring, and exposure to successful role models in agribusiness. Enhancing these elements may better prepare students to become innovative entrepreneurs who contribute to sustainable economic development.

Abstract

Inflation and unemployment are trade-offs for economic growth, and prolonged unemployment lowers GDP. With a GDP growth of 5.05% in 2023, Indonesia showed its resilience and strategic adaptability in the face of global economic uncertainty. This research examined factors influencing Indonesia's economic growth using macroeconomic indicators and time series data from 1974 to 2023. Stationarity tests (ADF and PP unit roots) and Johansen's cointegration confirmed long-term relationships among eight variables. The ARDL model investigated short and long-term dynamics, including CUSUM/CUSUMQ plots, SMPAE, and U-Theil inequality to assess causal relationships and model stability. ARDL results revealed that labor force participation, tax revenue, trade openness, urban population, unemployment, and technological advancement significantly impacted Indonesia's economic growth. Tax revenue, trade openness, foreign direct investment, and technological advancement positively influenced short-term growth. Short-run dynamics showed immediate economic adjustments affecting macroeconomic indicators and growth. The research determined that labor force participation, tax revenue, trade openness, urbanization, unemployment, foreign direct investments, and technological advancement were crucial for Indonesia's economic growth. The study suggests allocating resources to training, education, and skill development programs to boost workforce efficiency. The government should promote domestic production of tradable commodities, employ strategic tariffs and subsidies, and promote competitive sectors. The administration should nurture innovation, enhance access to technology, and invest in education. The government should improve tax collection, expand the tax base, and direct revenue toward growth-stimulating projects. Abstract

Healthy chilli farming has the potential to increase both the output and income of farmers in improving farmer’s welfare through GAP implementation. The welfare of farmers encompasses more than just income and production, hence, the Farmer’s Terms of Trade (FTT) serve as a reference point for household prosperity in Indonesia. This research aims to: (1) compare the productivity of chilli farmers, (2) examine the farmer’s terms of trade, and (3) analyze the impact of productivity and other factors on the farmer’s terms of trade associated with three farming methods: healthy, semi-healthy, and conventional farming systems. The study was conducted in Sleman Regency, Indonesia, a region that has been implementing healthy-chilli farming system since 2021. A total of 106 farmers were interviewed, distributed across 6 areas known for their significant chilli production. The respondents were selected through a simple random sampling approach. The FTT is assessed through household income and subsistence terms of trade. The comparison of farmer productivity was analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis H test. The findings indicate that the productivity of healthy-farming is higher than other two chilli farming systems. The FTT for healthy- farming is higher and classified as prosperous, while others do not yet reach prosperous level. Moreover, subsistence terms of trade of healthy and conventional farming statistically different. The increase of FTT was significantly affected by productivity, planting area, and price of chilli, while the number of family member, non-family labor cost, and household expenditures can decrease the FTT.

Abstract

Dairy cattle farming contributes significantly to global food security, yet research on urban dairy operations remains limited, particularly in metropolitan areas of developing countries where land scarcity and high operational costs present unique challenges. This study quantifies the profitability of smallholder dairy operations in Jakarta by examining production costs, revenue streams, return-cost ratios, and net profit margins under urban resource constraints. A survey conducted from October to November 2024 involving 56 active farmers used structured questionnaires and field observations. A Cobb-Douglas production framework analyzed through ordinary least squares regression identified determinants of milk output, complemented by descriptive examination of producer demographics, resource utilization, and economic indicators. Farmers averaged 49 years old with 13 years of formal education and 24 years of farming experience. Input allocation was found to be unbalanced, with forage and concentrates below recommended levels while tofu pulp and labor were excessive. Regression analysis indicated that lactating cow numbers and concentrate use significantly influenced milk production, while other inputs showed no significant effect. Feed, particularly tofu pulp, dominated the cost structure, with average annual production cost of IDR 280.2 million. Total annual revenue reached IDR 384.6 million, yielding net income of IDR 104.4 million. Urban dairy farming in Jakarta proved economically feasible with an R/C ratio of 1.37 and profitability of 37.27%. Metropolitan dairy production remains economically viable for small-scale operators through optimized feeding protocols, proactive animal healthcare, strategic policy support including input price stabilization and urban agricultural zoning, alongside revenue diversification for enhanced operational resilience.

Abstract

Shrimp is a leading export commodity in the fisheries sector in Indonesia, playing a significant role in generating foreign exchange earnings, particularly through exports to the United States and Japan. Despite its importance, the volume of Indonesian frozen shrimp exports to Japan has fluctuated in recent years. This research investigates the key factors influencing these export volumes, focusing on frozen shrimp production, international shrimp prices, the USD to IDR exchange rate, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Japan). Data were sourced from UN COMTRADE, the World Bank, Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and Trade Statistics of Japan. A quantitative research approach was employed, using multiple linear regression analysis to determine the relationships among the variables. The findings revealed that frozen shrimp production, the exchange rate, and GPD of Japan have a significant impact on export volumes, while international shrimp prices do not show a statistically significant effect. Among these, the GDP of Japan emerged as the most influential factor. Based on these results, policy recommendations include the enhancement of international branding, formulation of comprehensive production planning, and the improvement of product value and quality.
