Abstract

In the age of digital platforms, in which Indonesia is seeing an increase, consumers may access a broader range of services, information, and en tertainment more easily. A platform called Go-Jek provides several services. One of the various menus in Go-Jek is the Terms of Service. It has Indonesian and English languages. When a translator translates a text, the meaning or message of the original language has to be accurately and successfully conveyed in the target language to enable translators to grasp a wide range of cultural backgrounds and consider grammatical structures. This study aims to clarify and determine the dominant technique for translating the terms of service in the Gojek. In order to complete missing words or phrases between the originating language to the targeted language, the translator’s responsibility is to provide accurate and creative ability. This study method is descriptive and qualitative and uses the translation theory of Molina and Albir (2002)—the data obtained by documents. A total of ten translation techniques were used in this translation. The top two are established equivalent techniques with 256 data frequency and literal translation with 107 data frequency. The dominant translation technique is the established equivalent technique. This indicates a stronger inclination toward the target language form in the translation.

Abstract

The Asistensi Mengajar (AM) or Teaching Assistance designed to provide students with hands-on teaching experience in schools. Thus, it is preparing university students for future teaching careers. This research aims to assess the interest and readiness of students who participated in the AM program to become teachers after one semester of teaching experience. This research uses a survey research design with a quantitative approach and uses descriptive statistics for data analysis. The research population includes undergraduate English Language Education students of one of the state universities in Malang who have already joined AM during the 2022–2023 even semester, 2023–2024 odd semester, and 2023-2024 even semester; 46 students have participated in and finished the AM program and become the research sample. The result shows that students who participate in the AM program have an interest (32 respondents in the moderate category) and readiness (28 respondents in the high category) in becoming English teachers after graduating from university. The teaching profession remains a popular choice among undergraduate students, particularly in the English Language Education program. In conclusion, the AM program positively influences students' interest and readiness to pursue a teaching career post-graduation. Therefore, it is recommended that the university continue the AM program due to its beneficial impact on fostering students' interest and readiness to become teachers.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini mengeksplorasi efektivitas penggunaan kombinasi teknik round robin dengan media gambar digital dalam pengajaran menulis, dilihat dari kreativitas siswa. Metode penelitian yang diterapkan adalah eksperimen dengan faktorial 2x2 desain. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Pemulutan. Seluruh populasi dijadiakan sebagai sampel dimana kelas VII.1 sebagai kelas ekperimen dan kelas VII,2 sebagai kelas kontrol. Data dikumpulkan dengan kuisioner kreativitas dan tes tertulis yang berbentuk essay dan diuji validitas serta reliabilitasnya. Data dianalisis dengan uji-t dan Two Way ANOVA untuk melihat keefektifan teknik round robin dengan menggunakan media gambar digital terhadap peningkatan kemampuan menulis dilihat dari kreativitas siswa. Hasil penelitian. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa teknik round robin dengan media gambar digital dapat meningkatkan kempampuan menulis siswa yang memiliki kreativitas tinggi dan rendah. Selain itu, teknik round robin dengan media gambar digital lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan Direct Instruction jika ditinjau dari kreativitas siswa. Teknik round robin dengan media gambar digital mendorong siswa untuk berpartisipasi aktif, bertukar ide dan menstimulasi visual sehingga meningkatkan kualitas siswa. Meskipun kreativitas dan teknik pengajaran secara independen memengaruhi hasil belajar siswa, tetapi interaksi antara kedua variabel tidak signifikan. Pengintegrasian media gambar digital pada teknik round robin sangat membantu siswa yang kreatif meningkatkan kemampuan menulis mereka.

Abstract

Berdasarkan data Program Penilaian Siswa Internasional (PISA), pelajar Indonesia masih meraih nilai rata-rata dengan kategori rendah apabila disejajarkan dengan negara lain dalam literasi membaca. Selain itu, peringkat Indonesia dalam studi most littered nation in the world masih menempati peringkat ke-60 dari 61 negara. Fakta tersebut menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan membaca para pelajar Indonesia harus dianalisis guna mengetahui sejauh mana tingkat keterampilan membaca pemahaman mereka, khususnya pelajar di Daerah Bangkalan. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah untuk mendeskripsikan keterampilan membaca pemahaman teks berita siswa SMPN 2 Kwanyar. Metode penelitian yang digunakan ialah deskriptif kuantitatiif, yaitu mendeskripsikan data yang berupa angka atau diagram. Instrumen yang dimanfaatkan ialah tes keterampilan membaca dengan jenis pilihan ganda. Teknik analisis data yang dilakukan berupa analisis tingkat keterampilan membaca siswa dan tingkat kesukaran soal yang dikerjakan siswa. Hasil dari penelitian ini ialah siswa SMPN 2 Kwanyar yang dikhususkan pada kelas VII masih mendapat kategori rendah dalam membaca pemahaman teks berita. Soal pada indikator pemahaman literal mendapat kategori mudah, pemahaman inferensial, apresiasi, dan evaluasi dengan kategori sedang, sedangkan reorganisasi mendapat kategori sukar. Implikasi penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberi kontribusi penuh terhadap penelitian yang serumpun tentang keterampilan membaca pemahaman.

Abstract

Impoliteness plays an important role when communicating. Many people may forget to act politely when communicating with others. This study aims to examine the type and function of impoliteness strategies in the Indonesian presidential candidates' 2024 debates. This research used a descriptive-qualitative approach. Data collection used were observation and documentation methods. Culpeper's theory (1996) and Culpeper's (2011) are used as the basis for analyzing impoliteness strategies. The results of this study are strategies of impoliteness were found in 37 data. Bald on record impoliteness was found as much as 1 (2.7%), positive impoliteness was found as much as 21 (56.8%), negative impoliteness was found as much as 11 (29.7%), and sarcasm or mock politeness was found as much as 4 (10.8%), while in the type of withhold politeness, no data was found. In this research, it was discovered that Indonesian presidential candidates predominantly employed the strategy of positive impoliteness during the debates. Furthermore, 23 data were found on the impoliteness function. Affective impoliteness was found in as many as 5 (21.8%) and coercive impoliteness was found in as many as 18 (78.2%), while in the entertaining impoliteness function no data was found.

Abstract

AbstrakKemampuan menulis teks eksplanasi siswa SMA belum memuaskan. Salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan rendahnya keterampilan menulis teks eksplanasi siswa karena faktor pemilihan model dan media pembelajaran yang kurang interaktif dan inspiratif. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan peningkatan keterampilan menulis teks eksplanasi siswa dengan menggunakan model pembelajaran berbasis proyek berbantuan media gambar berseri dan mendeskripsikan keaktifan siswa dalam mengikuti pembelajaran menulis teks eksplanasi. Jenis penelitian yang dipilih adalah penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) model Kemmis & McTaggart yang dilakukan dalam bentuk siklus. Setiap siklus terdiri atas 4 kegiatan pokok, yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI.9 SMA Negeri 1 Kota Madiun tahun pelajaran 2023/2024 sejumlah 36 orang. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan teknik tes, observasi, wawancara, dan angket. Indikator Kriteria Ketercapaian Tujuan Pembelajaran (KKTP) dirumuskan mengacu pada penilaian yang berbasis pada pencapaian tujuan pembelajaran yang telah ditetapkan. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa model pembelajaran berbasis proyek berbantuan media gambar berseri dapat meningkatkan keterampilan menulis teks eksplanasi siswa dan mampu meningkatkan keaktifan siswa dalam pembelajaran. Nilai kebaruan penelitian ini terletak pada integrasi model pembelajaran berbasis proyek dengan media gambar berseri dalam pembelajaran menulis teks eksplanasi. Kata Kunci: menulis teks eksplanasi, model pembelajaran berbasis proyek, media gambar berseri Skill Writing Explanation with A Project-Based Learning Model Assisted by A Series of Image Media AbstractComposing explanatory texts for high school pupils is still an unsatisfactory skill. Students' poor explanatory text writing abilities can be attributed, in part, to their usage of less engaging and dynamic learning models and media. The aims of this study is to describe how a project-based learning model, with the help of serial picture media, has improved students' ability to produce explanation texts. It also aims to describe how actively students have participated in the process of learning to write explanatory texts. This type of research is classroom action research (PTK) using the Kemmis & McTaggart model, which is carried out in cycle form. Each cycle consists of four main activities: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 36 students in class XI.9 of SMA Negeri 1, Madiun City. Research data was collected using test, observation, interview, and questionnaire techniques. Learning Goal Achievement Criteria Indicators (KKTP) are formulated to refer to assessments based on the achievement of predetermined learning goals. Three methods of data analysis were used: quantitative, qualitative, and descriptive. The study's findings demonstrate how project-based learning, when aided by serial picture media, can raise student engagement in the classroom and help students write more informative texts. The combination of serial picture media with a project-based learning approach for learning to create explanatory text is where this research's innovation value resided. Abstract

Speaking is a challenging skill for students to acquire in Indonesia. This study seeks to investigate the perspectives of vocational students regarding digital role-play as an opportunity for enhancing their speaking skills. This study employed a qualitative method, utilizing a case study as the research design. This study was carried out at SMKN 1 Singosari, Malang. Four participants were involved in the study, consisting of two students categorized as high-achieving and two categorized as low-achieving, majoring in welding engineering for the academic year 2024/2025. The research used semi-structured interviews to gather the data. The findings of this study indicate that digital role-play engages vocational students and enhances their excitement for learning to speak English. Through the use of digital role-play, vocational students believe they can enhance their vocabularies and immediately evaluate their problems, including mispronunciation. As a result, digital role-play serves as an advantageous technique that can be utilized, enabling vocational students to enhance their English speaking skills.

Abstract

This study examined the use of off-record politeness strategies in the film The Day After Tomorrow, focusing on their role in crisis communication. The analysis was based on Leech’s politeness principle to evaluate the level of politeness and on Brown and Levinson’s theory to classify the strategies used. Eighteen utterances containing off-record strategies were identified and analyzed. Among the sub-strategies, presuppose was found to be the most frequently used, indicating that characters often relied on shared assumptions to communicate politely during high-pressure situations. The findings demonstrated that indirectness through off-record strategies served as a pragmatic tool to reduce the impact of face-threatening acts and maintain social harmony. This study concluded that politeness in crisis contexts is effectively conveyed through indirect speech, especially by using presuppositions. The results offer insights for further research on politeness in various communicative settings and potential applications in language education and discourse analysis.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning is a fundamental component of early English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, providing the foundation for young learners’ communicative competence. To support vocabulary acquisition, instructional approaches should be concrete, engaging, and developmentally appropriate. This study aimed to develop an interactive English Monopoly-based board game for Grade 1 EFL learners and examine its feasibility and classroom reception. A Research and Development (R&D) approach guided by the ADDIE instructional design framework was employed, functioning as a design model rather than a research method. The instructional media was developed through the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through expert validation, classroom observations, student response questionnaires, and teacher feedback forms. The study adopted a descriptive qualitative approach supported by descriptive quantitative data, focusing on feasibility, usability, and user responses. The findings indicate that the board game is a feasible instructional medium, fostering high levels of student enjoyment, motivation, engagement, collaboration, and active participation. These results highlight the potential of physical, game-based media to support interactive vocabulary learning in early EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This paper reports a qualitative case study examining Indonesian EFL pre-service teacher trainees’ experiences of an international teaching practicum at upper secondary schools in the Philippines. Drawing on narrative accounts from three teacher trainees and employing thematic analysis, the findings reveal two prominent themes related to the challenges encountered during the teaching practicum in an ESL context: academic-related and sociocultural aspects. The findings indicate that differences in the status of English and accent use significantly affected the trainees’ emotions and perceptions. In addition, differences in the focus of the curriculum and syllabus, as well as the higher level of instructional materials used in the host schools, required the trainees to make greater efforts to learn and adapt. Regarding sociocultural aspects, the most salient challenges were related to unfamiliar cultural practices that the trainees needed to address with professional sensitivity. This study suggests that international teaching practicum involves not only academic demands but also broader social and cultural dimensions that require teacher trainees to be anticipative and culturally responsive. Therefore, teaching practicum programs should provide greater exposure to intercultural awareness and the development of global teaching skills.
