Abstract

Writing in English is not an easy task for students. Many of the foreign language learners (EFL) find writing is a challenging activity and for some of them, writing is stressful. This paper is intended to describe the students’ writing problems when they are joining a writing course. The study uses a descriptive quantitative design. The participants were eighteen students from the English department of the Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang, and the rest were students who were interested in ESL from several universities. The instrument used in the study was a Likert Scale questionnaire, distributed by using a google form. Participants were asked to answer the questions listed in the questionnaire about problems in writing by choosing one of four options (strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree) for the close-ended question, a short text answer for open-ended questions, and several choices regarding the types of writing errors. The finding shows that there are four main problems experienced by EFL students in learning to write in the Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang, such as writer’s block (43.5%), difficulty in expressing ideas (17.4 %), feeling less confident (21.7%), and afraid of making mistakes (17.4 %). The finding also shows that most errors and mistakes made by the students in their writing are the content of the writing (the unity and coherence), the organization, and the grammar. The study implies that the internal factors play an important factor in the students’ success to accomplish the writing task. Thus, the writing instructors/lecturers need to give positive reinforcement to the students so that they have more confidence to write.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyze the politeness strategy used by characters in Cinderella movie to strengthen pragmatic competence.  The objective of this research is to identify, (1) types of speech act used by characters of Cinderella movie in conveying politeness strategies (2) types of politeness strategies that are depicted by characters in Cinderella movie, and (3) to describe the relation of politeness strategy and pragmatic competence. The study is designed as descriptive qualitative research. The object of the study is a movie entitled Cinderella. Documentation and observation are the techniques to collect the data. This research is analyzed by using Spreadley Theory which includes four stages of analysis namely domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis. The result of the analysis are (1) there are five types of speech acts used by the main characters of Cinderella movie in conveying politeness strategies. They are assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative. Directive speech act is becoming the most frequently used  by the main characters of this movie in conveying politeness strategies. (2) There are four types of politeness strategy that are depicted by the main characters in Cinderella movie. Those types are bald on – record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and finally off – record strategy. The result shows that bald on – record strategy becomes the most frequently used strategy compared to the others. Politeness and pragmatic competence have a very close relationship. The importance of pragmatic competence can be strengthened through the choice of politeness strategies. Film as a mirror of a society is a good medium to analyze the sociocultural background of the utterance so that the purpose of the speaker's meaning can be realized appropriately.

Abstract

The learning experience that motivates students can be created where competence is quantitatively assessed using gamification technology. A survey of students' opinions of gamification was conducted to determine the best practices of its use, the environmental conditions necessary for its success, and the manner in which the application should proceed. The effects of gamification on math achievement were examined using quantitative methods. The Kahoot application was found to be the preferred method of gamification in this study. These 80 English students took part in the experiment and studied at the Department. The findings revealed that adding gamification to the course increased the overall interest of students and boosted the aspirations of students to succeed in the course. This method also has a strong impact on the motivation of students. What this study found was that Kahoot can be used to successfully gamify lessons. In my research, the gamification method led to greater engagement by students.

Abstract

The development of information technology that can be used as a learning medium is ICT (information and communication technologies). This learning model is an innovation that can be implemented in the learning process, not only in the delivery of learning material but also changes in the abilities of various competencies of students. In fact, some universities have athlete student who cannot attend in class because of his activities such as championship or matches. Based on the situation, the researcher should have a solution, so that the athlete students still can follow the lesson Based on the problem formulation that has been described, the research objectives to be achieved are 1). Increase motivation to learn English athletes at Muhammadiyah University of East Kalimantan through online learning; 2). Improving the results of learning English athletes of Muhammadiyah University students in East Kalimantan through Online learning. With learning using online learning students can facilitate them in accessing their courses, completing assignments without having to be present in class. Learning using open learning has been proven to increase the ability to understand basic English in athlete students

Abstract

Kesulitan mencari padanan dalam menerjemah merupakan permasalahan yang sulit di pecahkan dalam kajian ilmu terjemahan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis bentuk kesalahan gramatikal pada terjemahan Arab-Indonesia. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif berupa kata-kata yang ada dalam teks terjemahan siswa MA At-Taufiq. Sumber datanya berupa teks terjemahan yang dikumpulkan melalui teknik dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teknik analisis interaktif. Pengidentifikasian tipe kesalahan, digunakan format analisis kesalahan bahasa yang mengelompokkan kesalahan berdasarkan taksonomi kategori linguistik yaitu kesalahan fonologis, morfologis, sintaksis dan leksikon. Identifikasi kesalahan juga didasarkan pada jenis-jenis kesalahan menurut Ellis. Ellis membagi kesalahan berbahasa menjadi empat jenis kesalahan yakni Omission, Addition, Misformation, Misordering. Temuan penelitian adalah, 1). penghilangan Al- yang ditemukan pada dua teks terjemah siswa; 2) Penghilangan an masdariyah yang ditemukan pada enam teks terjemahan; 3) Kesalahan dalam kaidah penyusunan huruf; 4). Kesalahan bentuk deklinasi ditemukan pada lima teks terjemah; 6) kesalahan letak pola urutan sintaksis pada kaedah Na’at Man’ut dan tamyiz yang  ditemukan pada tiga teks terjemahan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian sosiologi sastra yang bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan memahami esensi relegiusitas dalam kumpulan cerpen Tersangka. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini merupakan metode deskiptif kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah kumpulan cerpen Tersangka karya Syukur A.Mirhan dan El Navisa. Data diperoleh dengan teknik lihat, baca dan catat. Untuk menganalisis data, digunakan teknik analisis isi yang meliputi tahapan identifikasi data, klasifikasi data, dan interpretasi data. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ditemukan esensi religiusitas yang meliputi lima dimensi religius. Pertama dimensi keyakinan berupa keyakinan kepada Allah, keihlasan dan percaya takdir. Kedua, dimensi praktik agama yaitu berkaitan tentang peribadatan, membaca Al-Quran, dan melakukan kegiatan keagamaan. Ketiga dimensi pengalaman berkaitan dengan perasaan tentang kehadiran Allah dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, dan sikap sabar. Ke empat, dimensi pengetahuan agama berkaitan tentang informasi keagamaan. Ke lima dimensi pengamalan yang berisi tentang sikap saling menghormati, menjaga amanat dan tolong-menolong.Kata kunci: esensi relegiusitas; kumpulan cerpen Tersangka; sosiologi sastraThe Essence of Religiousity in the Suspect’s Short Story Collection  AbstractThis research is a sociological study of literature that aims to describe and understand the essence of religiosity in the collection of short stories of the suspect. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The source of data in this research is a collection of short stories Tersangka by Syukur A.Mirhan and El Navisa. The data was obtained by looking, reading and taking notes. To analyze the data, content analysis techniques were used which included the stages of data identification, data classification, and data interpretation. Based on the results of the study found the essence of religiosity which includes five religious dimensions. The first dimension of belief in the form of belief in Allah, sincerity and belief in destiny. The second dimension of religious practice which is related to worship, reading the Koran, and carrying out religious activities. The third dimension of experience is related to feelings about God's presence in everyday life, and an attitude of patience. The four dimensions of religious knowledge relate to religious information. The five dimensions of practice which contain mutual respect, maintaining the mandate and helping each other.Keywords: the essence of religiosity; collection of short stories Tersangka; sociological literature

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan tindak tutur direktif dalam pembelajaran daring di prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data dalaam penelitian adalah tuturan guru dalam pembelajaran daring di program studi pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah tuturan guru yang mengandung tindak tutur direktif yang  berupa kata-kata yang dituturkan secara langsung oleh pengajar saat proses pembelajaran. Pada peneitian ini teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik sadap dan teknik catat analisis. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima jenis tindak tutur direktif dalam pembelajaran yakni memesan (ordering), memerintah (commanding), memohon (requesting), menasihati (advising), dan merekomendasi (recommending).

Abstract

Perkembangan zaman, ilmu pengetahuan, dan teknologi semakin mempengaruhi perilaku manusia, mulai dari cara bersosialisasi, berkreasi, sampai dengan cara mengedukasi atau mengajar peserta didiknya di dalam kelas. Sementara itu, hal tersebut kontradiksi dengan realita bahwa masih banyak tenaga pendidik yang kesulitan beradaptasi dengan teknologi, sehingga menjadikan pembelajaran kurang dapat mengkonkretkan materi dan memberikan pengalaman bermakna bagi perserta didik. Adapun tujuan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu menghasilkan aplikasi “CERMAD” untuk media pembelajaran teks hikayat sebagai salah satu bentuk cerita rakyat dengan kearifan lokal Madura berbasis aplikasi Ispring untuk siswa kelas X SMA agar dapat memaksimalkan proses pembelajaran dan kebermaknaan pengalaman belajar peserta didik. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah metode 4D (penetapan, perancangan, pengembangan, dan penyebarluasan). Hasil dari penelitian ini meliputi tiga hal, yaitu penyajian isi, kebahasaan, dan desain media pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa media interaktif tersebut layak untuk digunakan. Penilaian dari ahli pembelajaran bahasa dan sastra mendapatkan persentase 94% dan penilaian oleh ahli media mendapatkan persentase 88%. Berdasarkan paparan hasil penilaian tersebut, media CERMAD ini “valid” atau “layak diimplementasikan” sebagai media pembelajaran teks hikayat di kelas X SMA.

Abstract

It is critical to know and memorize the vocabulary of a foreign language if one wishes to learn it, and repetition is necessary to aid in the retention of new knowledge. This paper investigated primary school students’ perception of gamification on vocabulary learning with 32 participants divided into two groups: Primary 1 and Primary 2. The research purpose on perception using Marbel for primary students and conducted with quantitative method. The results of this research show that gamification can improve students’ vocabulary size with majority of students’ feedback saying that they preferred Marbel than worksheet to learn vocabulary. At the same time, students were learning through their failures throughout the gameplay, they were encouraged to memorize the words. This will help students grow into independent and competent learners.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul Resistensi Tokoh-Tokoh Perempuan Lokal Papua Terhadap Tradisi Patriarki Dalam Novel “Tanah Tabu” Karya Anindita S. Thayf. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk: Mendeskripsikan tentang resistensi tokoh-tokoh perempuan lokal Papua terhadap budaya patriarki dalam novel “Tanah Tabu” karya Anindita S. Thayf. Jenis penelitian pada penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah novel “Tanah Tabu” karya Anandita S. Thayf yang berjumlah 189 halaman, diterbitkan oleh PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama, cetakan kedua pada tahun 2015. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik dokumentasi, simak, dan catat. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini dapat diketahui bahwa ditemukan bentuk resistensi terhadap tokoh-tokoh perempuan lokal Papua terhadap budaya patriarki dalam novel “Tanah Tabu” karya Anindita S. Thayf yaitu 1) Resistensi dalam bidang pendidikan, 2) Resistensi dalam perkawinan, 3) Resistensi mewujudkan diri sebagai kaum intelektual, 4) Resistensi melakukan transformasi dalam masyarakat, dan 5) Resistensi untuk berpikiran modern. Dengan demikian, bentuk resistensi yang terdapat dalam novel “Tanah tabu” karya Anindia S. Thayf tersebut menunjukkan bahwa tokoh perempuan lokal Papua tidak dipandang sebelah mata, mereka berhasil menepis stigma-stigma tentang perempuan lokal Papua yang dianggap lemah dan terbelenggu oleh aturan adat.
