Abstract

This study investigates the complex multidimensional motivation of students in Arabic language learning (ALL) within a religious school context (Madrasah), addressing the gap between high intrinsic interest and inconsistent self-regulated learning. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected through surveys, interviews, and observations from 60 students at MTsN 03 Sarolangun. The findings reveal that motivation is multidimensional, dominated by Religious Motivation (Very High), which acts as a collective source of energy and spiritual capital for potential self-regulation (Spiritual-Driven Self-Regulation / SDSR). However, Academic and Intrinsic Motivation are constrained by low self-regulated learning (65%) and a strong focus on grades. This goal-oriented behavior is classified as Performance Goal Orientation, indicating that motivation remains at the Identified Regulation stage, not yet achieving the stable Integrated Regulation phase of the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) continuum. The study concludes that sustainable motivation requires a pedagogical shift: teachers must transition the focus from performance to Mastery Goals by consistently implementing instructional strategies that emphasize Task Orientation and Autonomy Support. This intervention is crucial to foster sustainable self-initiated learning behavior.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of fi’il affixation and analyze the grammatical meaning produced in Surah An-Naba’. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research type. The research data are in the form of verses in Surah An-Naba’ containing fi’il, which are then analyzed using Arabic morphological and grammatical analysis techniques. The results of the study indicate that there are three forms of fi’il affixation, namely prefix, suffix, and confix. Prefix functions as a subject and time marker in fi’il muḍāriʻ, suffix functions as an actor marker (fa‘il), while confix indicates a combination of subject and number. The resulting grammatical meaning includes indicating time (past, present, and future), actor (subject), and number (mufrad and plural). Thus, affixation not only affects word form but also determines grammatical meaning in sentence structure. This research contributes to the study of Arabic morphology, particularly in understanding the relationship between affixation forms and grammatical meaning in the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Arabic language-teaching management in developing students’ speaking skills at Al-Hikmah Islamic Institute in Batu, East Java. The study focuses on the importance of educational management in organising and improving the quality of learning, especially in teaching Arabic, the language of the Qur’an and a key to understanding Islamic sciences. The researcher observed that some students struggle to speak Arabic fluently, underscoring the need for effective management through proper planning, systematic implementation, and continuous evaluation. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with the school principal, Arabic teachers, and students, and the analysis of relevant educational documents. The data were analysed using an interactive model involving data organisation, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Arabic teaching management at the institute is well-organised, from setting clear objectives and preparing instructional materials and media to implementing interactive teaching methods that encourage dialogue and practice, followed by continuous assessment. This integrated management approach has significantly improved students’ speaking ability, confidence, and motivation to learn Arabic.

Abstract

This study examines the importance of distinguishing between genitive constructions (iḍāfah) and descriptive phrases (na‘t) in Arabic-Indonesian translation and their impact on accuracy. It highlights structural and semantic differences between the two languages, which often lead to errors when translators misinterpret the relationships between phrases. Arabic relies on clear grammatical patterns such as possession and agreement, while Indonesian depends more on context and word order. The study finds that many translation inaccuracies stem from limited understanding of these distinctions and overreliance on literal translation. It emphasises the need for comparative linguistic analysis in teaching to help learners better recognise and apply these structures. Additionally, exposure to authentic texts is recommended to improve contextual awareness and translation sensitivity. The research also discusses the role of modern technology, including machine translation and artificial intelligence, in enhancing efficiency. However, it stresses that such tools cannot replace human expertise, as grammatical and contextual knowledge remain essential for evaluating and refining outputs. Overall, improving translation quality requires a balanced approach that integrates structural understanding, semantic awareness, practical training, and effective use of technological tools.

Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) presents new opportunities to improve digital literacy. In line with that, the government has ratified Circular Letter No. 9 of 2023 concerning World Ethics, which is currently entering the digital world 5.0, which is a continuation of the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. In addition, the vision of AI aims to be used as a solution to the problems of modern society, including those in Higher Education. This study reveals the challenges and opportunities of using Meta AI, especially through integration with the WhatsApp platform, to strengthen students' digital Arabic literacy in Metro cities. This study uses a qualitative approach, including in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation.  The object of this research is students of the Arabic Language Education (PBA) study program and the Arabic Language and Literature Study program (BSA) of Jurai Siwo State Islamic University, Lampung, and Ma'arif University, Lampung. The results of this study show that Meta AI offers opportunities through adaptive learning, increased accessibility, and support for self-paced learning. However, several challenges were also identified, such as limited student technical understanding, issues of academic ethics, language accuracy, platform integration, and privacy and regulatory concerns. The findings of this study emphasize the need for comprehensive pedagogical strategies and institutional policies to ensure the effective and ethical use of Meta AI to strengthen digital Arabic literacy.

Abstract

The development of digital communication has transformed how students express meaning, emotions, and cultural values in academic interactions. In this context, the use of Arabic-language stickers in WhatsApp has emerged as a linguistic phenomenon that integrates verbal, visual, and religious elements in student academic communication. This study employs a qualitative approach with thematic analysis to examine the meanings and communicative functions of Arabic stickers in students’ WhatsApp conversations. The data consist of screenshots of interactions between students and lecturers using stickers such as Fi Amanillah, Maas Salamah, and Kullu ‘am wa antum bi alfi khair. The findings show that Arabic stickers function not only as visual elements but also as a medium for expressing religiosity, politeness, and academic solidarity, and as a substitute for nonverbal cues in digital communication, enabling messages to be conveyed concisely, effectively, and with pragmatic and cultural depth. These findings highlight the integration of digital linguistics, language pedagogy, and academic communication, where Arabic stickers represent multimodal language resources that expand meaning-making in virtual spaces, can be utilised as context-based Arabic learning media to enhance pragmatic and cultural competence, and contribute to the development of communication ethics, social closeness, and interaction efficiency in Islamic higher education environments. Thus, this study explicitly contributes to digital linguistics through multimodal discourse analysis of online communication, to language pedagogy through implications of digital-based Arabic learning, and to academic communication through the reinforcement of polite, meaningful, and effective interaction in digital academic settings.

Abstract

Arabic, as the medium of instruction, plays a central role in fostering communicative interaction between teachers and students. However, differences in linguistic background and communicative competence often pose challenges to effective message delivery and comprehension. In this context, tadāwul af‘āl al-kalām (the exchange of speech acts) serves as a crucial communicative strategy for creating meaningful and effective classroom interactions. This study analyses the forms, functions, and meanings of speech acts in Arabic classroom interaction, as well as their role as a pedagogical communication strategy. A qualitative method with a pragmatic discourse analysis approach was employed, using classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were thematically analysed based on speech act theory (locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts) and functional categories (assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative). The findings indicate that directive speech acts dominate teacher communication, guiding instructions and learning activities, while students predominantly use assertive speech acts to convey understanding and responses. Expressive and commissive speech acts also emerge in affective and collaborative contexts. These results underscore that speech acts are not merely tools for information delivery but adaptive strategies that foster participatory, reflective, and meaningful classroom interaction. The pedagogical use of af‘āl al-kalām has the potential to strengthen students’ communicative competence and enhance the quality of Arabic language learning.

Abstract

This study presents a literature review of the use of the Duolingo Arabic application to develop maharah qira’ah (Arabic reading skills) through the integration of audiovisual and gamified learning approaches. The research used a qualitative literature review, analysing empirical and conceptual studies published between 2015 and 2025 on digital technology and Arabic language learning. Data were obtained from scholarly journals, proceedings, and academic databases such as Google Scholar, DOAJ, and ResearchGate, and analysed using content analysis to identify patterns, themes, and trends regarding the effectiveness of Duolingo Arabic in enhancing reading skills. The findings indicate that Duolingo Arabic significantly improves learners’ vocabulary mastery, literal comprehension, and reading fluency through its interactive audiovisual features and game-based reinforcement system. Moreover, the use of gamification elements such as points, levels, and instant feedback was found to increase learner motivation, engagement, and self-regulated learning behaviour. However, limitations were identified in addressing higher-level reading comprehension, including discourse interpretation and contextual understanding. The study concludes that Duolingo Arabic serves as an effective supplementary tool for foundational and intermediate levels of Arabic reading instruction, aligning with digital literacy frameworks and contemporary language pedagogy. Future research is recommended to empirically examine the long-term effects of AI-driven personalisation in Duolingo on deep reading comprehension

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the levels of students’ learning motivation and learning attitudes toward digital-based Arabic language instruction, and to examine the relationship between the two variables. The research employs a quantitative, descriptive-correlational design. The study subjects are 29 second-semester students of the Arabic Language Education Program at Sunan Drajat University, selected using a total sampling technique. The research instruments include questionnaires measuring learning motivation and learning attitudes, utilising a Likert scale. Data analysis is conducted using descriptive statistics and the Pearson Product-Moment correlation. The results indicate that students’ learning motivation falls into the high category (mean = 5.00), while their learning attitudes are categorised as positive (mean = 4.99). The correlation test yields r = 0.68 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between learning motivation and learning attitudes. This study demonstrates that digital-based Arabic language instruction can positively enhance students’ motivation and attitudes toward learning.
