Abstract

Arabic debate is an argumentative discourse with exceptional skills in conveying it; therefore, debaters are required not only to be proficient in the material but must also be able to use extraordinary rhetoric to satisfy the audience. This research analyzes the types and functions of Hyland metadiscourse markers used by debaters from the Indonesian team and the Singapore team in international inter-school debate events (ISDC) in Doha, Qatar. This research method uses descriptive qualitative research and a content analysis research design. Data collection techniques include listening and note-taking. At the data analysis stage, researchers carry out steps: collecting, reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions. This research shows that all Indonesian and Singapore team debaters used all subcategories of Hyland's interactive and interactional metadiscourse marker categories. Metadiscourse is vital to conveying an idea or discourse so that the reader and audience can express and understand the concept well.

Abstract

In human communication, language is really important because it helps us express ourselves and connect with others by sharing ideas, feelings, and information. Appraisal Theory of Engagement explains how language and emotions are connected. Engagement with the audience involves creating a connection between the speaker or writer and the intended recipients of the message. The research employs qualitative techniques on kinds of engagement system reflected by the host of BBC: The Big Questions. The researcher will focus on BBC The Big Questions show from YouTube entitled “Is digital media good for democracy? BBC News.”  The result showed that there are 7 Monoglossic clauses and 86 Heretoglossic clauses. The domination of Heterogloss clause on BBC The Big Questions show that the clauses said by the speakers are dominantly engaged with the viewpoints of other. The most heterogloss which found on the show is Entertain. There are 56 clauses out of 86 clauses. It shows that the percentage of Entertain is 65,1%. The domination of Entertain shows that the speakers explain their opinions as well as to open up possibilities in the viewpoints.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify and classify Gairaigo derived from English in Japanese robotics terminology. The expected results of this study encompass deepening the comprehension of prospective entrants into the Japanese robotics sector and, more broadly, offering valuable insights to learners of the Japanese language on Gairaigo origination from English in Japanese robotics terminology. This study utilized a qualitative approach. The analysis of the gathered data involved the use of descriptive methods. The selected data was acquired from reputable websites of prominent robot developers from sources like Motoman and RoboticsBiz. The investigation identified 267 robotics terms written in English. After the data was verified by Japanese online dictionaries such as Tangorin and Jisho, this study identified 170 Gairaigo derived from English in Japanese robotics terminology. The result of the data analysis classified the Gairaigo derived from English in Japanese robotics terminology into three main categories: robot’s concepts, robot’s components, and robot’s movements.

Abstract

Minangkabau people are a native group that lives in West Sumatra, which is in the middle highlands of Indonesia. Its spoken language is Minangkabaunese which there are many oral literatures in the language including proverbs. This study aimed to look the forms of the proverbs and the cultural values represented in proverbs use and to figure out the women portrayal represented in proverbs use in Minangkabau’s customary rules: Sumbang Duo Baleh. Cognitive Linguistics theory and Conceptual Metaphor theory were applied in the study to give a complete look at how the community expects women to behave. The results showed that because of Minangkabau women’s importance as leaders and role models in their society, they should fulfil all the social requirement to be become a well-regarded member of society otherwise they will be looked down upon in society.

Abstract

This research investigates the translation of food names on menu lists by employing a Linguistic Landscape approach, focusing on public spaces such as restaurants and cafes. The goal is to recognize the categorization of menu types and structures and to identify the translation methods. Four types of menu classification are found in the menu list, and more frequently provided to cater to the requirements of the local community. The usage of menu types is evenly distributed across food in the Northern Purwokerto area, starting from bite-sized food to traditional food. The menu types tend to be used in Western culture and are rarely applied to Indonesian food conditions. The prevalence of main courses as a predominant menu structure is attributed to the common preference among Indonesians for substantial meals. Therefore, various dining establishments adapt to the cultural preferences prevalent in their surroundings. There is also a descriptive translation method being the most commonly employed. It involves providing a detailed of the process and elaborating on the food menu by explaining how the dishes are served. Moreover, the food menu served aligns with the local culture, characterized by a prevalence of hearty portions.

Abstract

Compared to other sounds, /l/ and /r/ have much more complex and more variable articulatory configurations across speakers. The present study aims to find the articulatory dynamics of lateral /l/ and trill /r/ across two Dravidian languages, i.e., Tamil and Telugu. A total of 20 subjects from two language groups were taken for the study, with 10 participants from each language, which includes an equal number of males and females. Tongue contours for each subject were taken for /l/ and /r/ sounds in the VCV context. In Tamil, the posterior tongue height was more for /r/, and there was no difference in height in the mid-region and anterior region. In the /u/ context, tongue height was more for /l/. The statistical analysis of /l/ and /r/ in Tamil revealed that in the /a/ context, there was no significant difference in tongue advancement and tongue height. The tongue height for /l/ was more in the anterior region when compared to the /r/, but there was no significant difference in tongue advancement in the /i/context. The present study findings will be provided information regarding the tongue dynamics of trills and laterals in normal individuals across two Dravidian languages.

Abstract

According to Systemic Functional Linguistics, modality is the realization of the interpersonal meaning. Many modality analyses have been conducted in political speeches, debates and student’s writing. However, there have been a few comparisons of two talk shows where the same participant interacted with two different power statuses. This article explored with whom and what type of modality Ellen, the host of Ellen Talk Show, used more and the ambiguous situations where it is difficult to decide propositions or proposals. With the theory of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985; Halliday, 1994; Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004; Eggins, 2004; Halliday and Matthiessen, 2014), the article found out that Ellen used more modality with the teacher (30%) than with the Vice President (17%). Despite she is supposed to communicate in formal language, she chose to speak in an informal way. Secondly, Ellen enjoyed more or less the same probability in two Talk Shows, while two times more obligation and 4 times more inclination with the teacher. Finally, it is significantly found that ambiguous situations can occur when obligation and inclination – ‘have to’ and ‘want to’- are realized in the exchange of information, and probability ‘am going to’ is found in the realization of an offer and ‘can’t’ in a command.

Abstract

Some researchers have challenged the framework by proposing a poststructuralist model that captured the L2 complication learning and made outcomes of learning difficult to predict. They attempted to maintain that linguistic communities may have diverse and even contradictory opinions. This study investigated the case of two students who joined a student exchange to the UK and the US regarding the impact of learning their L1and L2 experiences and changes in social context on the construction of their L1 and L2 identities. It found that as English learners as a Foreign Language (EFL), the identity advancement of these two students was in line with poststructuralist theory.  Their identity considered fluid, dynamic, and contradictory. The two students negotiated and renegotiated their identities in various social contexts in Indonesia-UK and Indonesia-US, and they were finally accepted into the L2 academic community. This study also analyzed two Indonesian students' experiences in language learning and identity. The paper also highlighted that conflict could be an element of students’ identity construction and encouraged them to be persistent and self-resilient while being able to navigate through negative encounters that take place amid the proses of second language acquisition.

Abstract

This study examines the phonological varieties of Acehnese numeral words, using primary data from ten villages in the Aceh Jaya district on the west coast of Aceh, Indonesia, and supplementing it with secondary data from Standard Acehnese, Proto-Chamic, and other relevant languages and proto-languages. The research aims to elucidate the historical relationship between the Acehnese and Chamic languages through a comparative analysis. Fifteen numeral words (one to ten, eleven, twelve, twenty, one hundred, and one thousand) were elicited from informants aged 40 to 65. The collected data were recorded, transcribed into IPA symbols, and subsequently analysed. The findings indicate that the split between the Acehnese-Chamic branch and the Malayic languages occurred during the period when the terms for 'eight' and 'nine' were still undergoing lexical stabilisation. The Acehnese language was then subgrouped from Chamic, initially as a dialect. A few centuries later, the ancestors of the Acehnese migrated from mainland Southeast Asia to Sumatra, where their numeral system was subsequently influenced by borrowing from the Malay language. The dialects spoken on the west coast of Aceh retain linguistic evidence of the presence of a language similar to Proto-Chamic and its early contact with indigenous Sumatran populations, and those from the Malay Peninsula.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and reconstruct the language identity in Lamongan as Adipura City. The problem focuses on how the form and pattern of language identity in Lamongan to maintain Adipura City in East Java. This research uses Linguistic Landscape Theory, which describes lingual existence, linguistic ideology, and lingual competition. The research method uses a phenomenological approach with a qualitative descriptive type of research, although some information uses numerical data. The target of the study is language identity in Lamongan with the most popular language pattern instruments, namely Indonesian, Arabic, Javanese, Sanskrit. The research target can formulate a pattern of language identity in Lamongan as a cultural and religious center. The results of the study can model the language identity scheme in Lamongan in the pattern of language choice towards naming places of worship, bilingual Indonesian and Arabic are more dominant, but also found Indonesian, Arabic, Javanese to Sanskrit contained in monolingual and multilingual which there are patterns of language choice found in Lamongan
