Abstract

It is inevitable that there are partialities to certain parties, one of which is news related to North Korea. CNN tends to release news by emphasizing negative aspects of North Korea, such as its nuclear program, human rights violations, and restrictive government policies. This study aims to prove the power of CNN as a media in constructing the image of North Korea. This research is qualitative research because the data used is not numerical data. This research uses the three-dimensional theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. The theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) by M.A.K. Halliday is also used as a supporting theory to analyze the first dimension of CDA. The results showed that there is a partiality of CNN to the United States in writing news. Starting from the use of verbs that indicate the occurrence of violence, the existence of negative words, and the conflict factors that occur between the United States and North Korea are supporting aspects of the formation of a negative image of North Korea in public.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the interplay between Indonesian celebrity’s controversial issues and the responses of haters as seen in the on-line hate speech. To have a better understanding of the controversies, a case study was applied, in the meantime, the issue of hate speech was viewed from content analysis. The data concerning the celebrity’s life were taken from both printed and on-line media; meanwhile, the ones relating to hate speech were gathered from two mainstream social media platforms: Instagram and Twitter spanning from 2015 to 2022. The results of the study indicate that there are three controversial issues which might bring about hate speech: celebrity’s past controversial marriage life, the status as a divorcee who often changes boyfriends, and the family’s controversies. In addition, haters’ reaction toward those controversial issues were expressed through swearing, the use of euphemism and dysphemism consisting of social, personality, religious insults, satanic expression, provocations, mockery, anger expressions written with capital letters, and accusation for blowing up the reputation relating to family. The hate speech expressed by Indonesian netizens is in serious condition and can influence other aspect of life in society.

Abstract

This paper presents an integrated approach to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction by embedding minority women’s literature within a five-week curriculum designed to promote both linguistic proficiency and intercultural competence. Grounded in Third World feminist theory, transformative learning, and postcolonial pedagogy, the module engages students in critical analysis of short fiction by Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Amy Tan, Helena María Viramontes, and Bharati Mukherjee. Each week centers on a thematic focus—memory, matrilineal heritage, diaspora, trauma, and healing—while incorporating explicit language instruction in grammar, vocabulary, discourse, and pragmatics. The curriculum also integrates the Multicultural Teaching Competency Scale (MTCS) and the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) as tools for assessing teacher preparedness and student growth. Through the synergy of language and literature, this study demonstrates how EFL classrooms can serve as transformative spaces where students develop not only communicative competence but also critical empathy, cultural literacy, and ethical awareness.

Abstract

The present study attempts to investigate the students' responses on the suitability of web-based readability analysis application results using the Systemic Functional Linguistics Framework through lexical density analysis with their level of language proficiency. This study used a qualitative method supported by some descriptive quantifications to analyze the lexical-density indexes of reading texts. Six texts were randomly selected from the reading texts written in five of Cambridge's Books, and nine participants at different levels were purposively selected to verify the accuracy. The findings revealed that the percentages of lexical density indexes of six selected Cambridge Books texts categorized based on the CEFR level used in this study and automatically analyzed by the application follow the complexity standard decided by the book's writers. Furthermore, the students at each level have a positive response to the text tested, as seen in their ability to answer the questions in each text created by the book's writers. This study provides the implication of informing educators to utilize the web-based readability analysis used in this study to help them analyze the text automatically, accurately, and quickly.

Abstract

The newspaper media demonstrates clear support for the current government, as revealed in a study that addresses the negative impacts of media bias and raises awareness of biased media agendas. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) shed light on how social, political, and ideological contexts influence the production and interpretation of texts. The study focused on a Jakarta Post news article published on oil hike price on Saturday, September 3, 2022e. Through a descriptive qualitative analysis using CDA, the study examined the news text's macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure, uncovering significant bias. The Jakarta Post's coverage presented a skewed perspective on the government's decision to raise fuel prices, acknowledging social and political implications, including the potential for public unrest and concerns about corrupt power.

Abstract

Book review articles highlight the worthiness of new publications through critical insights, encouraging deeper interest and appreciation among readers. Previous studies often lack focus on journal reputation and publication regions. This study aims to analyse authors’ common rhetorical pattern and strategies for evaluating and issuing final opinions. Forty-eight articles from eight Scopus-indexed journals in language-related field were analysed using four moves with sixteen steps model. The results indicate that the first three moves (Introducing the book, Summarizing the content, and Evaluating the book) are obligatory, while Issuing a final opinion is conventional. Additionally, two steps (Defining the general topic of the book and Providing a general assessment) consistently appear. The analysis reveals that the authors tend to use praise more frequently than criticism in their evaluations, particularly when assessing the book as a whole. Furthermore, the findings show that authors primarily provide recommendations and rarely disqualify the works for final judgment. This study has important implications for novice writers, as they should be familiar with the rhetorical structure and aware of the strategies used for evaluating and issuing final opinions in book review articles, thereby enhancing their chances of publication in high-impact journals.

Abstract

In 2016, Indonesia was captivated by the sensational cyanide murder case involving Mirna Salihin and Jessica Wongso, which resurfaced in 2023 through Netflix’s documentary Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso. While public discourse focused on the legal drama, little attention has been given to the linguistic mechanisms shaping perception within such forensic narratives. This study addresses that gap by examining how presuppositions construct meaning and potential bias in the documentary’s discourse. Utilizing George Yule’s presupposition theory within a forensic linguistic framework, the research identifies and categorizes presupposition types embedded in the dialogues. The study applies a qualitative method, collecting fifteen data samples through observation and note-taking of segments containing presuppositional cues. The analysis reveals the presence of 8 existential, 7 factive, 2 lexical, 4 non-factive, 3 counterfactual, and 1 structural presupposition, which indicate that the allegation of murder committed by Jessica Wongso against Mirna Salihin remains inconclusive. These linguistic patterns suggest how narrative framing and implied assumptions may influence audience interpretation of guilt and innocence.Ultimately, this study underscores the role of presupposition analysis as a tool in forensic linguistics for uncovering implicit meaning and assessing the fairness of language in legal discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the types and objectives of questions in the trial of cyanide coffee cases. The method used is qualitative descriptive. The source of research data is the trial conversation of Jessica Wongso's case in the form of video recordings from the Kompas TV YouTube channel. The research corpus was drawn from four trial videos asked in 2016. Data was collected by observation techniques and recording techniques. The research instrument is a human instrument. The transcribed data was analyzed using matching and distribution data analysis techniques. The validity of the data is carried out by theoretical triangulation. Based on the results of the research, two conclusions can be drawn. First, 1585 data consisting of four types of questions were found. The four types of questions include 543 or 34.3% declarative questions, 501 or 31.66% wh questions, 397 or 25% polar questions, and 144 or 9.1% disjunctive questions. Second, when viewed by objective, these types of questions consist of three objectives, namely 713 or 45% of questions constructed for confirmation purposes, 603 or 38.1% of questions aimed at obtaining information, and 267 or 16.9% of questions for clarification. Thus, the process of analyzing the data of the question in the trial of the cyanide coffee case is interrelated between the type and purpose of the question.
