Abstract

This study aims to provide quantitative and qualitative evidence through lexicostatistical calculations to determine the separation distance and possible relationship between the Manggarai and Bima languages. Manggarai and Bima languages are two Austronesian languages belonging to the Central-Eastern-Malayo-Polynesian located on two adjacent islands. Manggarai is the language spoken by the Manggarai tribe on West Flores Island, while the Bima is the language spoken on the island of Sumbawa. This is based on evidence of the discovery of several vocabularies that have similar forms and meanings in both languages. The researcher uses secondary data provided in Lexirumah and Austronesian Basic Vocabulary databases that contain Austronesian lexical data based on 200 Swadesh word lists promoted by Swadesh (1952). Based on lexicostatistical calculations, the results show that the two languages show a kinship level of 27%, which means that the Manggarai and Bima languages are two different languages from different family group (stock level), or, in other words, the Bima and Manggarai languages were a single language 3.016±242 years ago. Meanwhile, the qualitative results were obtained by considering the related vocabulary between the two languages and showing the existence of sound correspondences, such as [w]~[v], [f]~[p], [d]~[t], [r]~[l], and [a]~ [e].

Abstract

This article studies the translation of Al-Qur’an into English. Some facts (concepts, notions, perceptions, images, consideration) degrade from those contained in the original language. This may be due to some translation problems related to the theory of translation and semantics, semiotics, pragmatics and so on. Lexical problem in terms of how dictions were selected and decided to translate a certain word in the language of Al-Qur’an. In translation, two translations by two different translators, Dawood and Pickthal, were examined to see how they tried to employ corresponding words in translating terms used by Al-Qur’an. When the meaning may be translated well, the beauty of the verse is degraded very much or even not grasped at all. In this part, two translations from Yusuf Ali and Shakir were compared to see how the beauty of the verse was transferred well. As a conclusion of this study, some facts related to the meaning of words and beauty of verses were untranslated correspondingly. Many other disciplines of language studies should be involved to translate Al-Qur’an

Abstract

Student wellbeing has emerged as one of predictors in improving student learning outcome. Studies have reported that resilience, sense of belonging, and eudaimonia are parts of student wellbeing constructs that contribute to higher student achievement. However, none of the studies tested the relationships between the three variables and student reading achievement. Therefore, this study aims to examine student wellbeing constructs of resilience, sense of belonging, eudaimonia, and the effects on these variables on students’ reading achievement. This study also attempts to provide structural model depicting the interrelationships between students’ wellbeing and student reading achievement. PISA 2018 Indonesia data were used in this study with the total sample of (n = 12,098) 15-year-old students in Indonesia. The data were analyzed by employing structural equation modeling (SEM) technique using IBM SPSS AMOS 26. The findings of this study revealed that resilience, sense of belonging, and eudaimonia significantly and directly influenced student reading achievement, and only eudaimonia had a significant negative impact on reading achievement. The study also indicated that sense of belonging is the best predictor of higher student reading performance

Abstract

Keeping students motivated is the key to adding to the quality of the process and learning outcomes. However, due to the coronavirus outbreak disruption, students have to move to temporary remote instruction. Moving through a changing time has significantly influenced the motivation of students. The research investigated the students' motivation towards remote learning and the factors that influenced their motivation. The investigation method was qualitative descriptive using questionnaires involving 38 English graduate students at one of the public universities in Indonesia. Interviews and document analysis were carried out to further explore the participants' answers to the questionnaire. The findings showed that regardless of the pandemic disruption, the student's learning motivation was relatively high, as indicated by students' willingness to learn, students' beliefs about learning outcomes, students' participation in online learning, and student's performance on course assignments. Various factors, such as the environment, the school system, and social life, have also influenced their education. The lack of interaction between teacher and student has affected their understanding during the learning process. Hence, the study recommends institutions' involvement in a cooperative learning program that can assist students in need of additional support and reinforce their English learning motivation during emergency remote learning.

Abstract

This paper examines Miguna's political commentaries on Facebook, which have become a potent force in Kenya's socio-political discourse. Known for his incisive and metaphor-laden commentaries, Miguna, popularly called "Double M", has sparked a surge in online political discussions, evoking both admiration and ire from the public. However, his style has also raised concerns about slander and libel in pursuing justice, secularism, and democracy. The gap in this study lies in the limited understanding of how conceptual metaphors, as utilized in Miguna's political commentaries on Facebook in Kenya, impact power structures, government policies, and communication practices. The study uses the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980) and the Deconstruction Theory (Derrida, 1967) to analyze the data collected from Miguna's Facebook page using a web scrapping tool, Octoparse. The Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) was utilized to identify the conceptual metaphors in Miguna's commentaries. The analysis revealed seven metaphorical conceptualizations of politicians: despots, conmen and cartels, orphans and cows, corruption monsters, socialite bimbos, and human rights violators, with politicians as the source domains and despots, conmen and cartels, orphans and cows, corruption monsters, socialite bimbos, and human rights violators as the target domains. This study shows how metaphors contribute to political commentary, their impact on power structures, and their relevance in the digital age, specifically in Kenya. The findings have broader implications for freedom of speech, defamation, and responsible communication, guiding policymakers, educators, and media practitioners.

Abstract

The slogan creation process has always been a scourge for product manufacturers since they need to make something that is concise while being able to catch the consumers’ attention. One of the most used methods in creating slogans is by utilizing stylistic linguistics. This paper focuses on phonological aspects of repetition used in slogans of international brands marketed in Indonesia, and compares both the original and the Indonesian versions of the slogans. Out of 432 slogans gathered, the analysis results revealed that the most used style in both languages is rhyming. On the other hand, the least used are epiphora and epizeuxis. The domination of rhyming style usage in both languages is influenced by cultural history, especially in literary artworks. Although rhyming dominates the type of stylistic used in creating slogans, the percentage of slogans using phonological stylistic repetitions is quite low. In the original version, the percentage of slogans using phonological stylistic repetition is only 17.13%. Meanwhile, the Indonesian counterpart only shows 17.82% of phonological stylistic repetition.

Abstract

Abstract

Language learning styles and strategies have been developing for several years as one of the crucial parts of language learning. Metacognitive techniques have been looked into as aids for improving pupils' reading comprehension. The metacognitive strategy instruction should be integrated with students' different learning styles to help them be more effective and autonomous learners. Even though learning styles are crucial to language acquisition, few studies have examined the relationship between perceptual language learning and Indonesian students' use of metacognitive reading strategies. This study examined how metacognitive techniques were used when academic reading from a visually oriented standpoint to fill the gap. An open-ended questionnaire was employed in a descriptive quantitative study. There were fifteen experimental and fifteen students in the experimental class, and the data were analyzed quantitatively. They used a reading comprehension test adopted from the Baron TOEFL reading section to achieve the pre-test and the post-test scores. The statistical results showed a significant interaction in metacognitive strategy with a visually oriented style in pre and post-test with a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05). The results of this study will persuade English teachers to provide metacognitive reading methods through suitable instructions and supervision so that students may put them into practice and advance their reading comprehension.
