Abstract

In English, the sound system is somewhat distinct from Arabic. Yemeni Novices have many difficulties pronouncing English terms owing to this. For example, we often hear English learners pronounce "sight [sait]" with "[saig]" or "know,” [nəʊ]" with "[knəʊ]." This study is concerned with identifying widespread errors in the pronunciation of silent letters in English words among Yemeni EFL learners. Qualitative descriptive study was used in this investigation as a methodology. With the aid of purposive sampling techniques, a sample of 5 EFL novices was selected from 1st level of the English Department, Faculty of Education, Sana'a University, Yemen, which was classified into a group of novice high-level learners (beginners). Analytically descriptive method was used to analyze the data after they were collected through test. The result of this study showed that in pronouncing words containing the silent letters like b, c, d, g, gh, h, k, l, m, n, p, s, t, th, and w, the researcher finds errors made by the EFL novices. He analyzes three positions of the silent letters in the words (initial, medial, and final position) and by understanding this; it would be possible to develop useful instructional materials and teaching strategies to target this issue.

Abstract

Pedagogical approach and methods are prominent in students’ engagement in second language learning. Strategies and scaffolds are two other interconnected issues that matter in bilingual classrooms.  This study crafted some findings of pedagogical practices performed by bilingual teachers which may fall into accommodating or dumbing down bilingual learners’ needs. It is an ethnographic study which used class observations as data to find the realities of practices that teachers used for English language learners at the Indonesian college level. It revealed how a teacher stood for a certain method and pedagogical approach to negotiate instructional strategies within a bilingual classroom. Further, this study picturized challenges, upsides, and downsides of using the approach and method in the bilingual classroom which needs further balance of two language acquisitions. This study implicates principles of second language teaching and learning and most importantly bilingual teaching resources are required to improve the effectiveness of bilingual teaching.

Abstract

The study aims at constructing the awareness-building process of Taiwanese government officials from historical and sociocultural perspectives. This paper analyzes the program designed by Asia University which offered a 12-week intensive English training course for 19 government officials in Nantou in 2013. The study used: 1) Needs Analysis questionnaires (pre- and post- survey), and 2) structural interviews to discuss the following questions: 1) To what extent do officials enrolling the program actually need English in their works? 2) How do they realize their needs? 3) Based on the Needs Analysis (NA), what elements should a successful government ESP program incorporate? The study found that although participants agreed on the benefits of joining the program, not many of them know their specific needs. They just want to improve their English generally. However, they gradually notify that their needs as the program brought then district idea of learning. Finally, their replies suggested that more ESP for government officials are needed.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of intersubjectivity in the production and appreciation of humor. Intersubjectivity is a concept in the phenomenological philosophy that explains the connection of humans to each other. Intersubjectivity  can be used to explain the nature and way of humor works; supplementing the three existing theories of humor namely incongruity theory, superiority theory, and relief theory. This study is a literature review which data were obtained from 30 scientific articles related to humor, intersubjectivity, and the link between the two. Data were excavated using the https://www.connectedpapers.com software. The research stages taken in accordance with the stages of literature review include design, provision of literature (conduct), analysis, and presentation.  The result showed that intersubjectivity has a role because it connects humor makers and connoisseurs through knowledge, feelings, awareness, and even mutual unconsciousness. Funny experiences can arise because makers and connoisseurs can access a “shared world” that allows a certain stimulation to bring out funny feelings that spark laughter. In the production and appreciation of humor intersubjectivity plays a role of (1) providing shared knowledge, (2) asserting the existence of emotions, and (3) directing the meaning of actions.

Abstract

As COVID-19 globally spreads from one country to another, the commitment to resolve the crisis has ultimately fallen on world leaders. Consequently, recent public health and safety policies may become the target of controversies, in which people and media may question the government’s stance. This research examines Donald J. Trump’s representation in a newspaper article entitled “Coronavirus in America: Why the US Has Struggled to Tackle a Growing Crisis,” published by The Guardian in 2020. The article discusses Trump’s involvement in the issue of COVID-19 in the United States, in which the containment of the crisis has yet to be successful. The research employs Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), emphasizing the three structural levels of news discourse: macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure. Next, the qualitative descriptive research method is utilized, and the data are collected using library research. In terms of findings, it is found that the three structural aspects portray Trump in a negative light. It is hoped that the research can further contribute to CDA to COVID-19.

Abstract

The low competence in listening behavior of Japanese language learners affects their interactional competence (Miyanaga, 2013). Textbooks, however, are not used optimally even though listening behavior teaching materials may greatly contribute to learner’s conversational skills, particularly for novice learners. This study examines the form and function of the Japanese listener response (aizuchi) by analyzing the structure of the dialogue model of the textbook ‘Minna no Nihongo I and Minna no Nihongo II.’ Using the interpersonal discourse system from Systemic Functional Linguistics, this study identifies aizuchi and non-aizuchi responses, mapping the distribution of aizuchi’s form and function in the textbook and describing variations in function and patterns of use of aizuchi-shi (short response). This study indicates two findings. Firstly, aizuchi is a listener’s response after the speaker’s statement (K1) and confirmation request (cf). Secondly, the short responses that have the highest frequency of use in the basic Japanese textbooks are referred to as aizuchi (aizuchi-shi): ‘soo desu ka,’ ‘soo desu ne,’ ‘ii desu ne,’ and ‘wakarimashita’; which has the function of understanding, supportive agreement, emotional/feeling expression, and turn-relinquishing. It concludes that basic Japanese textbooks are sufficient for teaching basic listening behavior because aizuchi is presented in various forms, functions, and usage contexts.

Abstract

This study explores how speakers use interactional markers in the diplomatic speech Model United Nations Conference. We used a discourse analysis approach focusing on the meta-discourse markers; the analyzed data comes from the speech utterances based on 10 representative delegates. The data was taken on 27-28 March during the conference day. The five research classifications are hedges, Boosters, Attitude Markers, Engagement, and Self-mentions. The result reveals that the speakers use 280 interactional markers. Besides, the speaker's use of interactional markers might designate a tendency that would impact the audience's agreement on the topic.

Abstract

A sincere invitation is a speech act with a significant role in interpersonal communication, and the purpose of this study is to explore the speech acts commonly used by Yemeni speakers to convey sincere invitations in their daily interactions. The qualitative research approach focuses on the linguistic and social contexts in which sincere invitations are made. Data is collected through personal observation and online interviews, which simulate brief, everyday social conversations. The study includes a purposive sample of native Arabic-speaking Yemeni individuals residing in the provinces of north Yemen. The data analysis is based on Searle's speech act theory, which is used to evaluate a speaker's adherence to Felicity Requirements as an indicator of the authenticity of their invitations. The findings indicate that Yemeni speakers use declarative and interrogative sentences to convey indirect illocutionary acts of genuine invitations. Furthermore, the genuineness of these invitations is established through the observance of felicity conditions proposed by Searle.

Abstract

This research article investigates the structure of the Kikuyu Determiner Phrase (DP) from an X-bar theory perspective, with a focus on the modifiers of the DP. Kikuyu is a Bantu language spoken by approximately 6.6 million people in Kenya, with a highly agglutinative S-V-O structure. However, limited studies have been conducted on the structure of the Kikuyu DP, which makes this study significant in providing valuable information for researchers and speakers of the language.    The study aims to determine the structure of the Kikuyu DP by analyzing the Kikuyu determiners or modifiers of the noun. In the context of constituent structures, the X-bar theory is employed to depict the varied positions of modifiers within the Determiner Phrase (DP), as evidenced by the phrase structure trees. The research utilizes a descriptive-qualitative method of data analysis, with data collected from resourceful informants and selected Kikuyu texts. The self-introspection method is used, as the researcher is a native speaker of the Kikuyu language. The findings of the study reveal that Kikuyu determiners can be both pre-nominal and post-nominal, with some having the ability to be pre-posed and post-posed like demonstratives. This study contributes to the understanding of the Kikuyu language structure and provides insights for future research.
