Abstract

Abstract This study discusses the existence of Sufism in the tradition of the pedaq api in Lombok. Pedaq api as a naming procession cannot be interpreted visually, but is a 'text' culture that is full of meaning and represented by symbolic signs. The elements that exist in the pedaq api imply the essence of the human self itself, because it is motivated by philosophical thinking that interprets the elements of human life. The analysis used is the semiotic Roland Barthes methodology. From this study three concepts of the existence of sufism were obtained in the tradition of the pedaq api. First, the tradition of pedaq api as salvation. Second, the tradition of the pedaq api as an intermediary to remind the agreement of the child with his God. Third, the tradition of pedaq api as a representation of the journey of human life from the beginning of the incident to death.

Abstract

Language is a means of communication to convey idea, mind, and feeling to the other. The research problems are the accommodation in buying and selling conversation between buyers and sellers in Gang Baru traditional market Chinatown Semarang and the accommodation direction. This research applies descriptive qualitative method. To collect data, it applies observation, tapping, and recording. Then the data are analyzed descriptively based on the theory of accommodation. The findings show that there is an accomodation in the conversation between buyers and sellers in traditional market Chinatown Semarang. The direction of accommodation are both convergence and divergence. In the convergence, the speakers adapt positively, otherwise in the divergence, the speakers adapt negatively. The interpersonal interaction provides the speech in a conversation. Each talk or speech has its own function and becomes the component to arrange the comprehensive relation in a conversation. There are functions on convergence and divergence accommodation. The convergence accommodation has functions to maintain the symmetric speech, to reactualize the solidarity, to keep cooperative speech, to reduce interpersonal difference, to consider the other view, and to provide adaptation. While the divergence accommodation has functions to bargain, to retain the argument, to keep personal speech, to maintain the identity, to keep personal identity, to maintain ethnic identity, to retain the distance, to keep asymmetric speech, and to maintain idiosyncratic speech. It is implied that the speech accommodation in Gang Baru traditional market Chinatown Semarang represents such markers as solidarity, cooperative, symmetric, asymmetric, tolerant, identity, and ethnic markers.

Abstract

Interjections are widely applied in Javanese dialect and they characterize particular functions, especially in spoken communication. However, with the growth of economic, urbanization, and associated area depopulation, dialect anomaly will lead to two ways: first, a community will be vulnerable as dynamic urbanization occurs; second, its linguistic characteristic will lead to “linguistic salad-bowl” as the result of “linguistic melting-pots”. Therefore, it is important to study dialects before they disappear in certain areas. In addition, there is relatively little research that has been done on Semarangan Javanese in the area of interjections, as supported by Jovanović (2004), who claims that “Interjections, as one of the marginal and perhaps least discussed upon classes of words”. Semarangan Javanese has some distinct characteristics in its spoken form, especially in its lexical divergence. Consequently, different interjections appear. This research aims to discuss Semarangan Javanese interjections, in terms of the sociopragmatic function applied by Semarangan Javanese speakers in a certain communication context. The researchers applied Jovanović’s interjections classification as the basis of this research. Field research method was used to gather the data by conducting direct observation to research participants. Semarangan Javanese interjections can be explored into three components, namely form, position, and meaning. Based on the findings, the form of Semarangan Javanese interjections are realized from phonological, morphological, and semantic occurrences. These interjections are also recognized in the initial, final, and independent positions. Such variety of meanings from the interjections can be indicated through several contexts that take place in the communication.

Abstract

Since English has become international language, Indonesian people prefer to mix their language using Indonesian and English rather than Indonesian and their mother tongue language. Indonesian comics are also showing this phenomenon. One of Indonesian comics which uses code-mixing in its dialogues is Alice by Angellina. Most of the dialogues in Alice use Indonesian-English code-mixing, besides the characters’ names are also use Western names, instead of Indonesian names. The study focused on determining the types of code mixing: insertions, alternations, congruent lexicalizations (dialect) and the forms of words in the process of word-formation (such as noun, verb, adjective, phrase, and sentences). The tendency in using the code mixing is because some words have been used so often in the people’s daily conversation in showing the emotions and sense.
