Abstract

Cambodia, like many developing nations, faces an urgent need to address the growing e-waste challenge. With an influx of electronic devices and limited e-waste management infrastructure, the environmental and health implications are significant. A people-oriented and sustainable form of development like Industry 5.0 has the potential to revolutionise the management of e-waste. In this paper, the authors focus on the applicability of principles of Industry 5.0, namely the use of collaborative robots, Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain, for the sustainable management of e-waste in Cambodia. Using data from secondary sources, this study analyses the existing practices of e-waste management in Cambodia, establishes certain deficiencies and proposes Industry 5.0 solutions that would help prevent environmental damage, practice sustainable waste management, and enhance recycling practices. It provides recommendations for policy and regulatory mechanisms to foster better uptake as the overall aim is to support Cambodia’s sustainable development policies.

Abstract

This study explores the strategic role of Da'wah communication within the Mental and Historical Development Unit (Bintaljarah) of Kodam XIV Hasanuddin in fostering religious moderation among soldiers. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach with a communication science perspective, this research identifies five core pillars of the propagated message: national commitment, tolerance, non-violence, accommodative stance toward local wisdom, and exemplary leadership (Uswah Hasanah). The findings reveal that the communication process is systematically structured through planning, message encoding, media selection, and evaluation. Furthermore, Bintaljarah functions as a vital agent for de-radicalization and a stabilizer of institutional identity. This study implies that integrating religious moderation into military mental development is crucial for maintaining national integrity in a multicultural society

Abstract

Zakat, Infaq, Alms (ZIS), and Other Religious Social Funds (DSKL) are pivotal for equitable welfare distribution and poverty alleviation in Indonesia. However, public compliance remains suboptimal due to uneven awareness. This study explores the da’wah communication strategies employed by BAZNAS Makassar City to enhance public awareness and participation in ZIS and DSKL payments while identifying implementation challenges. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation involving key informants from BAZNAS Makassar City. The findings reveal that BAZNAS Makassar adopts a multi-channel communication strategy, integrating direct outreach via Zakat Collection Units (UPZ), digital transformation through websites and social media, and strategic collaboration with the Makassar City Government via the Automatic Deduction (PO) System for civil servants' salaries. These strategies are executed through segmented, persuasive, and educational approaches tailored to diverse audience demographics. Despite these efforts, obstacles such as inconsistent participation from volunteer preachers, internal resistance to salary deductions, and low zakat literacy persist. This study suggests that strengthening preacher capacity and diversifying digital communication media are essential for building institutional trust. These findings provide a strategic framework for zakat institutions to develop more adaptive and sustainable communication models in a contemporary religious context. Abstract

This research investigates the construction of religious messages and the efficacy of cultural preaching (da’wah) within the Pepe’-pepeka ri Makka (Fire in Mecca) dance tradition in Paropo Village, Makassar. While traditionally viewed as a cultural spectacle, this dance functions as a sophisticated medium for Islamic proselytization. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this study utilizes Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic framework—comprising signs, objects, and interpretants—to analyze the ritual’s poetry and choreography. Data were collected through participatory observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with key informants, including traditional maestros and religious figures. The findings reveal that the dance is a complex symbolic system representing core Islamic tenets, specifically Tawhid (monotheism), angelic hierarchies, and Thaharah (ritual purification). The fire serves as a potent index of divine light (Nur) and a symbol of spiritual resilience, echoing the miracle of Prophet Abraham. However, the analysis through the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model indicates a significant gap in public reception. While the performance elicits strong affective responses, such as awe and emotional engagement, the cognitive and behavioral impacts remain limited. This disconnect is attributed to linguistic barriers in the classical Makassarese poetry and the lack of explicit narrative interpretation. The study concludes that for cultural da’wah to achieve its transformative potential, "intersemiotic translation" is required to bridge the gap between traditional symbolism and contemporary public understanding.
