Abstract

Gairaigo is loanwords in Japanese. Gairaigo refers to words that come from foreignlanguages, except China. This gairaigo is written in Japanese phonetic script which iscalled Katakana. Since 16c Japan has interaction with foreign countries, mainly withPortuguese. Through this interaction Japanese borrowed words from foreign languages. After the reopening of Japan in 19c, the absorption of foreign words especiallyfrom European and English predominate. Loanwords are used for concepts which donot exist in Japanese, euphemism and also for other reasons such as status marking orfashionability. When a foreign word containing a consonant cluster is borrowed intoJapanese, it is modified substantially because in Japanese every consonant must befollowed by a vowel. In Japanese language, loanwords are unique and various. Abbreviationsuch as ‘terebi (from terebishion, television)’, portmanteous such as ‘dijikame(dijitaru kamera, digital camera)’, loanblends, Japanese words that combine withother foreign words such as ‘haburashi’ is a blend of Japanese ‘ha (teeth)’ and English‘burashi (brush)’, chanpon’go, combination of two different foreign languages such as‘puchi hoteru’ small hotel derives from ‘petit (french)’ and ‘hoteru (hotel)’, waseieigo,‘made in Japan’ English such as ‘sarariiman’ (salary man) refers to salaried worker. Dueto Japanese pronunciation rules and its mora-based phonology, the pronunciationhas changed to the original language, the variuos forms and the use of gairaigo whichdo not reflect its original meaning make the foreigners who learn Japanese as foreignlanguage find is hard to recognize gairaigo.Key words : gairaigo, foreign language, loanword

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This study was aimed at analyzing and describing the authenticity of assessment implementation by teachers in vocational school in Buleleng Regency. The analysis of assessment authenticity in this study was seen from teachers’ assessment planning and assessment implementation as well as how teachers and students perceive the assessment implementation. This study used exploratory method as the design involving 35 vocational English teachers and 35 classes of vocational students in Buleleng Regency. The data was gathered through document study, questionnaire, and interview and analyzed qualitatively. The results tend to point on a sufficient level of teachers’ assessment implementation. Its level was also found to be sufficient based on how teachers and students perceived its implementation. It was because most of the lesson plans designed by the teachers did not include relevant assessments yet to the expectation of the syllabus. The assessment instruments planned such as rubrik, blueprint, and test was found to be less appropriate. Although some assessments seemed to fulfill the criteria of authentic assessment well, inappropriateness of its implementation was still found. It indicated that the assessments implementation did not represent students’ competency yet as required in their real-world life.

Abstract

This research with its descriptive design aimed at (1) investigating as well as describing the types ofverbal and non-verbal behaviours used in the art of mabebasan activities, (2) finding out of describing the functionof each type of nonverbal behaviours, and (3) finding out the extent to which proportion of the appearanceof verbal and nonverbal behaviours in the art of mabebasan activities. The data about the function of nonverbal behaviours in mabebasan activities were collected through questionnaire and interviews. While conducting theinterview and observation, recording by using handycam and notetaking were also done. The collected datawere then analyzed, using quantitatively descriptive method and qualitatively method.Based on the result of data analysis done, it can be concluded as follows. Firstly, not all linguisticmacro functions advocated by Searle arise in mabebasan activities. Gradually, the types and frequencies oftheir occurance are as follows (1) representative function appeared 166 times (66.40%), (2) directive functionappeared 41 times (16.40%), and (3) expressive function appeared 43 a times (17.20%). There were no commisiveand declarative functions found. Secondly, in general viewed from the types of actions, it was foundout that there five types of nonverbal behaviours, which can gradually be classified as follows: (1) hand movements1 (0.40%). These findings were in accordance with the result of the questionnaire, in which the interpreters(the translators from the source language to Balinese) stated that the movements mostly used in mabebasanwere hands movements.Thirdly, in the activities of the art of mabebasan, the non-verbal behaviours or actions are very important, nonverbal behaviours like head movement, body movement, hand movement the combination of headand body movement, and the combination of head, body, and hand movement, always accompany the processof perfoming and interpreting in mabebasan. Without such movements, interpreting in mabebasan seems notto be serious or complete, the performance in mabebasan is not interesting or artistic; the appearance is not sopolite; the performance is not so complete; the mabebasan activities are so life/natural; language use becomesimperfect. In relation to speech function, there are three types of nonverbal behaviours identified in mabebasannamely : (1) nonverbal behaviours functioning to complete, emphasize or clarify the representative functioningof speech, (2) nonverbal behaviours which function to complete, emphasize or clarify the directive function ofspeech, and (3) nonverbal behaviours having the role of completing, emphasizing, or clarifying the expressivefunction of speech.Fourthly, quantitatively, it seems that there is a correlation between the frequency of the occurance ofverbal behaviours and nonverbal behaviours. It means that every speech/speech act is really accompanied byaction/movements. Verbally, it was found that there were 250 speeches, and nonverbally it was found out thatthere were 250 types of nonverbal behaviours in mabebasan activities. Keywords: verbal behaviour, nonverbal behaviour, function of nonverbal behavior, speech act

Abstract

This article aims to know the effectiveness of Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS) through the students’ interaction habits in literacy which was designed by the school formally. Interaction in literacy means when there is a reciprocal between the the students and the text read by the students. The data was collected through literature review, interview, and questionnaire. The data analysis used was descriptive qualitative. The conclusion showed that the students started to think positive toward the literacy habits in SMA N 1 Kuta Selatan which they underestimated it before. The positive impact of this program was confirmed through the students’ written comments. In some classes that were taught by the researcher, most of the students give their positive comments. Their positive comments can be defined as follows. Some of the students started to love a non-academic book, some started to change their habits after reading a motivational book, and most of them felt entertained by this program. The students also got addicted to non-academic books because the books inspired them. Moreover, there were some students who forced their parents to buy their favorite books. The others students admitted that they saved their money in order to buy their favorite books. In addition, they also exchanged their books to their friends after listening to their friends’ story. As a first step, this program has successfully strengthening the ecosystem of education literacy. Kata-kata Kunci  : habitus, literasi, karakter bangsa, minat baca
