Abstract

This research is an attempt to describe the language features of Banjarese women that distinguish them from the ones of men. In this study, the researchers aim to explain the features in a broader setting that is not limited to one specific interaction space. This research is qualitative research. The main instrument of this research is the researchers themselves. Data is collected through transcripts of recorded conversations taking places in three different settings. This research is carried out in South Kalimantan context where the Banjarese language is used in the daily interactions of the people. The data is analyzed using the theory of Female Language Features from Lakoff & Bucholtz (2004) as the research protocol. Some findings of this study contradict the general concepts of language and gender which differentiate the language features of women and men. In daily interactions, Banjarese women and men show supportive or competitive interactions in their conversations. Banjar women can also use harsh words in their interactions with other women or with the opposite sex. However, research with a wider context is needed in the future before concluding that Banjar women and men are equivalent in linguistic behavior.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the effectiveness of Duolingo on students' vocabulary. The researchers used quantitative methodologies with a quasi-experimental design in this research. This research used two classes that consist of experimental class and the control class as the sample. Class X OTKP served as the experimental class for this study, whereas Class X BDP served as the control class. Forty-six students made up the group. To gather data, the researchers employed multiple-choice vocabulary exams with 40 items. To calculate the data analysis, the researcher used the t-test formula. The finding shows that Ha was approved based on the data analysis. The results showed that ttest 2,8 and ttable = 2,00 with a significance of 5% (0,05) and ttable 2,42 with 1% (0,01). It means that ttest > ttable and Ha was accepted. Therefore, the use of Duolingo is effective for teaching English vocabulary in the tenth grade at SMK Trisakti Jaya Bandar Lampung. Meanwhile, the mean score of students' vocabulary in experimental class is higher than the mean score of students' vocabulary in control class (72.6 > 67,52). The results demonstrate that Duolingo is the solution for the teacher to teach vocabulary at one of Vocational School in Bandar Lampung.

The study found three categories of humor: superiority, incongruity and release. Incongruity is a major finding because it aligns with the characteristics of stand-up comedy which is to express genuinely miserable concepts while combining them with humor. This thesis discovered that the comedian's punchline indicated the existence of stereotypes regarding specific racial groups. The racial stereotype humor found is dominated by the Middle East, such as Iran, Arabia, and Indian. In addition, another finding in this thesis is the construction of Chinese identity.
