Abstract

This research aims to develop an interactive book as a medium to foster empathy in early childhood towards endemic animals in South Kalimantan, particularly the proboscis monkey (Bekantan) and mudskipper fish (Timpakul). The research follows a research and development (R&D) methodology, encompassing need analysis, product design, development, and evaluation stages. The interactive book, titled Antan & Kepi: The Friendship that Grew by the River, tells the story of a friendship between Antan, the proboscis monkey, and Kepi, the mudskipper, which forms when Antan shows empathy by rescuing Kepi from being trapped in rocks. The book aims to address the identified lack of local wisdom-based reading materials, particularly those featuring endemic animals, available to young learners in South Kalimantan. The product was validated by two experts: a media expert and an early childhood English expert. The validation process assessed content feasibility, alignment with psychological and linguistic development, and technical aspects of media presentation. The final product received an overall validation score of 86.08%, indicating high feasibility for use. Despite this, experts suggested improvements in font size and image clarity to enhance readability and visual appeal. The findings highlight the potential of interactive media to contextualize learning and support language acquisition while instilling empathy and environmental awareness in young children. The interactive book provides an engaging, culturally relevant resource for early childhood education, offering a meaningful, localized learning experience that connects children with their environment.

Abstract

The research using the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method aims to help students enhance their speaking abilities through Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) using the Wordwall game. This research is motivated by the low speaking skills of students at the elementary level who need innovative methods to increase their participation and speaking ability. This CAR method involves four steps, each consisting of observation, planning, action, and reflection. The findings of this research revealed a considerable improvement in the use of the Wordwall game, including increased active involvement and confidence in speaking. In conclusion, the use of DGBL with Wordwall proved effective in improving the speaking skills of students at the elementary level, as well as creating a more interactive and fun learning environment. This study recommends further use of this method in various educational contexts to improve students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

The main objective of this research is to design and develop a quartet card game that integrates Pacitan’s local wisdom to enhance students’ English vocabulary. Mastery of English is crucial in today’s globalised world, yet Indonesian students’ proficiency remains low. Effective and engaging learning materials, like the quartet card game, can help improve English skills. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model, which includes five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The analysis stage involved needs assessment and learning context analysis. The design stage created an initial quartet card game based on Pacitan’s local wisdom. In the development stage, a prototype was made and tested. The implementation stage used the game in classroom learning. The evaluation phase assessed the game’s effectiveness by measuring students’ vocabulary enhancement and their responses. Results showed that the SIKU card game effectively enhanced students’ English vocabulary and increased their motivation and interest in learning English. The positive response from students indicates that integrating local wisdom into learning media makes the learning process more engaging and meaningful. This research contributes to education by developing innovative, local wisdom-based learning media, enriching learning materials, and strengthening students’ cultural identity.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology supports a creative and innovative educational process in digital form, especially in providing digital material. E-module, as one of the digital materials, allows the students to access it easily. This research aims to develop a Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS)-based e-module of reading for English Literature students at Satu Nusa Lampung University. This teaching material is developed using Canva. This uses the ADDIE research and development (R&D) model in five stages, namely (1) Analysis (2) Design (3) Development (4) Implementation, and (5) Evaluation. The result shows that this e-module that has been developed is valid, practical, and effective. The validity of this e-module reaches a very good category based on the expert’s and validator’s evaluation.  The practicability reaches very good based on the students’ responses and lecturers’ evaluation. This e-module is effective and reaches a very good category based on the students’ achievement on the test.

Abstract

Developing students’ multimodal communicative competence is essential in the Indonesian new curriculum, Kurikulum Merdeka (Freedom Curriculum). To help achieve this goal, the Indonesian government created a series of textbooks. This study explored whether the textbooks have served their designated purpose by scrutinizing the representation of various modes used in the textbook and the methodological features to support the improvement of students’ multimodal communicative competence. One textbook, Work in Progress, was chosen to be analyzed using Littlejohn’s three-level evaluation framework. It was found that the book has incorporated combinations of modes in the form of input and expected outputs. However, the pedagogical aspect employed does not encourage the development of multimodal communicative competence.

Abstract

In early 2020, the covid-19 disease spread around the world. This greatly changed the order of life of the people in the world. One of the most affected is Education, especially learning activities. Therefore, it is a challenge for teachers to make learning with an online system (Asynchronous learning) but it can still be effective to do. One of the most popular among learners is the flipped classroom. Flipped Classroom is also an alternative for teaching English to Non-English Department Students during and after the Covid-19 Pandemics. This research aims to describe how Flipped Classroom is implemented in English I Course at Geography Education Study Program in the Academic Year of 2023/2024.  Narrative Inquiry method is used as the way to collect the data from the lecturer who taught the course. Findings show that certain characteristics of Flipped Classroom have been fulfilled although there are some others which are not quite exactly as required by Flipped Classroom. Since the data were obtained from the subject only, it is recommended that future research on flipped classroom should clearly describe the activities used for both in-class and out-of-class activities obtained from observations

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of pop music as a pedagogical tool to enhance English pronunciation in high school students. This research focused on a single group of participants with a sample size of 15 who underwent both pretest and posttest assessments. The results of both the pretest and the posttest, which measured the students' improvements in pronunciation accuracy, were then meticulously calculated and analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The results indicated a statistically significant improvement in the pronunciation skills of the students from pretest to posttest. Students who engaged with pop music reported higher levels of motivation to improve their English pronunciation skills. The research revealed that students became more active participants in the learning process, displaying heightened motivation and interest in learning English. Thus, the findings indicate that pop music not only improves pronunciation but also contributes to a more enthusiastic and interactive classroom atmosphere.
