Abstract

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common infectious disease, primarily caused by Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are the main UTI-causing bacteria in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the inhibitory effectiveness of aqueous extract of torch ginger flower (Etlingera elatior) against these bacteria. The extract was obtained through maceration using distilled water as a solvent and tested using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method on bacterial isolates from UTI patient urine samples. Sampling was conducted non-randomly using a quota sampling design with a total of 2 kg of flower sample. The extract concentrations tested were 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%, and compared with positive control (ciprofloxacin) and negative control. The results showed that the aqueous extract exhibited inhibitory activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa, with average inhibition zone diameters ranging from 6–8 mm. Statistical analysis using the Shapiro-Wilk test indicated non-normal data distribution (sig. ≤ 0.001), hence the Kruskal-Wallis test was applied, yielding significance values of 0.003 for E. coli and 0.002 for P. aeruginosa. Further Mann-Whitney test results showed significance values of ≤ 0.05, indicating significant differences between extract concentrations. In conclusion, torch ginger flower extract has potential as a natural antibacterial agent, although its effectiveness is still lower than that of ciprofloxacin.

Abstract

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are one of the most common diseases and have the potential to cause systemic inflammatory responses. The inflammatory process triggers the liver to produce C-Reactive Protein (CRP). Therefore, CRP testing can be used as an indicator of inflammation and to support clinical diagnosis. The latex agglutination method is a simple and rapid technique for detecting CRP qualitatively and semi-quantitatively. The type of study used was an observational laboratory study employing accidental sampling with a sample size of 20 serum samples from patients exhibiting clinical symptoms of RTI. This study aimed to determine the results of CRP testing using the latex agglutination method in patients with suspected respiratory tract infections. The test results showed that of the 20 serum samples, 12 samples (60%) were CRP positive and 8 samples (40%) were negative. It was concluded that the majority of patients with suspected respiratory tract infections showed positive CRP results, indicating the presence of active systemic inflammation. Abstract

The increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus has prompted the search for complementary therapies based on natural ingredients. Jicama (Pachyrhizus erosus) is a source of inulin, which has been shown to act as a prebiotic. Lactobacillus acidophilus, on the other hand, is classified as a probiotic and has been demonstrated to maintain the balance of gut microbiota. The combination of these two substances as a synbiotic is expected to have a synergistic effect in lowering blood glucose levels. The objective of this study is to examine the antihyperglycemic effects of administering a synbiotic extract of jicama and L. acidophilus to mice (Mus musculus) with hyperglycemia. The experimental design of the study comprised four distinct treatment groups: a control group, a group exposed to a single dose of bengkuang extract, a group exposed to a single dose of L. acidophilus, and a group exposed to a synbiotic combination. Hyperglycaemia was induced by administering streptozotocin at a dose of 55 mg/kg BW. The parameters measured included blood glucose levels. Statistical data analysis was performed using a paired t-test (Paired t-test). The synbiotic combination demonstrated a substantial reduction in blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic mice (p=0.04442). Conversely, the jicama extract group exhibited no statistically significant effect (p=0.12287) when compared to the control group. However, a decline in blood glucose levels from 285.50 mg/dL to 223.50 mg/dL was observed when the data was examined from the average before and after treatment perspectives. The administration of L. acidophilus suspension to hyperglycemic mice (Mus musculus) demonstrated no significant impact on blood glucose levels (p=0.05213), while the control group administered with distilled water exhibited a significant increase in blood glucose levels (p=0.00085) from an average of 114.25 mg/dL to 145.25 mg/dL.The synbiotic combination of jicama extract and Lactobacillus acidophilus has demonstrated potential as an antihyperglycemic agent, operating through mechanisms that include improving glucose metabolism, increasing glucose transporter expression, and modulating the gut microbiota. This formulation has the potential to be developed as a functional food-based adjunct therapy.

Abstract

Cancer is a disease that arises due to errors in the cell division system, resulting in abnormal cell growth, which can change shape and spread to other organs or metastasize. Chemotherapy is the mainstay of cancer treatment, but it can cause changes in the composition of the microbiota in the digestive tract. A decrease in microbiota can interfere with the protective effect against pathogen colonization, so it needs to be restored by consuming probiotics. This study aimed to compare stool consistency and probiotic bacteria counts in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy before and after being given probiotic ice cream containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum. This was an experimental study that counted the bacteria before and after giving probiotic ice cream to the stool of nine breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at the Cibabat Regional General Hospital in Cimahi City. The number of probiotic bacterial colonies in the patients' feces before and after consuming probiotic ice cream twice a day for 3 days was counted macroscopically on MRSA media. The results showed that the consistency of feces before treatment was 1 hard sample, 1 liquid sample, and 7 soft samples. After treatment, all samples had a soft consistency. There was an increase in the number of probiotic bacteria in 7 patients and a decrease in 2 patients. It was concluded that the administration of probiotic ice cream has the potential to increase the number of intestinal probiotics in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and improve stool consistency to normal.

Abstract

A clinical laboratory is a place to conduct and serve health examinations. One of these is a hematology examination using a hematology analyzer. Quality control is an activity carried out to ensure internal quality within the laboratory. This research method applies a quantitative descriptive approach. This study was conducted at the Kimia Farma Clinic in Mataram City, from August to October 2024. The examination results were obtained from quality control of white blood cell and hemoglobin counts using a Sysmex KX-21 Hematology Analyzer. The results of this study indicate that the erythrocyte and hemoglobin examinations obtained fairly good measurement accuracy, but the mean value of the hemoglobin examination from August to October had a small difference compared to the actual value. The coefficient of variation (CV%) at low, normal, and high levels tended to beabove the maximum limit of CV <8%. According to the results of this Westgard examination rule, the evaluation of the Levey-Jennings chart showed that control data at certain levels were affected by the 12s rule as a warning rule as well as the 22s rule and R4s rule of rejection. The conclusion is that the erythrocyte and hemoglobin level examinations have quite good measurement accuracy because the quality control results are mostly within the control range. Precision is affected by recurring random errors, which need to be addressed to maintain consistency of results. The total error frequency is three random errors (once every month: August, September, October) and three systematic errors (once every month: August, September, October).

Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a bacteria that causes diseases such as urinary tract infections, kidney infections and mostly causes swelling (abscesses) such as acne and skin infections. This bacteria is one of the most common species of the genus Staphylococcus bacteria in clinical interest. Cat's whiskers (Orthosiphon stamineus) is a herbal plant, Lamiaceae family which is used as an antioxidant and is able to inhibit bacteria because it contains antibacterial compounds, namely flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids and saponins. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of cat's whiskers leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of S.epidermidis. Experimental research type. Disc diffusion method, paper disk planting technique. The results of the study on the inhibition zone A1 (cat's whiskers leaf extract concentration 25%) 7mm, A2 (cat's whiskers leaf extract concentration 50%) 8.375, A3 (cat's whiskers leaf extract concentration 75%) 12.6 mm are categorized as resistant, and A4 (cat's whiskers leaf extract concentration 100%) 15.258 mm are categorized as intermediate, which shows that A4 is the most sensitive and has the most even distribution in inhibiting the growth of S. epidermidis. The results of One Way Anova have a sig value <0.05 there is a significant difference in the four extracts and their positive controls meaning that there is an effect of the concentration of cat's whiskers leaf extract on the growth of S. epidermidis. The conclusion of this study is that there is an effect of the concentration of cat's whiskers leaf extract on the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Abstract

Smoking activities, especially tobacco, produce ash, light and smoke that contain toxins for the body. The largest exposure to toxins from smoking is Cadmium (Cd), around 25% - 50% of Cd is absorbed through cigarette smoke. Cd will enter the respiratory tract in the form of Cadmium Oxide (CdO) then to the lungs and bind to erythrocytes, following the blood circulation to the tissues and organs of the body. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of cadmium in the blood of active smokers and used a descriptive method. The samples used came from 15 subjects who were willing to have blood samples taken. The examination method used is ICP MS The results of the study from 15 samples of active smokers who were courier service workers showed that the highest level of cadmium (Cd) was 3.1 µg / L and the lowest cadmium (Cd) content was 0.3 µg / L. The results of the study of 15 samples of active smokers who are courier service workers found that cadmium (Cd) levels ranged from 3.1 µg/L to 0.3 µg/L. The conclusion of this study is that cadmium (Cd) levels in the blood are still within normal limits, namely below 5.0 µg/L according to OHSA (Ocupational Safety and Health Administration).

Abstract

Abstract NAPZA (Narcotics, Psychotropics, and other Addictive Substances) are substances that affect the central nervous system and can cause physical, psychological, and social disorders due to dependence. Drug abuse has become a serious problem in both health and social aspects because it has a broad impact on the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities. Rehabilitation efforts are an important step in restoring patients’ conditions from the effects of dependence. This study aims to describe the types of NAPZA detected in the urine of rehabilitation patients at Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Hospital, Lawang, during the period of January–July 2025. The study used a descriptive quantitative design with a total sample of 30 rehabilitation patients obtained through secondary data. Urine examinations were conducted using a strip test covering five parameters, namely amphetamine (AMP), methamphetamine (MET), benzodiazepine (BZO), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and morphine (MOP). The results showed that the most frequently detected substances were stimulants, with AMP and MET found in 6 respondents each (20%). THC was detected in 1 respondent (3.3%), while BZO and MOP were not found in any sample (100% negative). In conclusion, the pattern of NAPZA abuse among rehabilitation patients was dominated by stimulants (AMP and MET), cannabis (THC) use was relatively low, and there was no abuse of BZO or MOP.

Abstract

The search for environmentally friendly and sustainable sources of natural antibacterial agents has become increasingly essential in recent years. One promising alternative is the use of eco-enzymes, which are complex mixtures derived from organic waste fermentation and known to contain bioactive metabolites with antimicrobial potential. Pineapple peel, in particular, is rich in various bioactive compounds with documented antibacterial and antioxidant properties, making it a viable substrate for eco-enzyme production. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of pineapple peel-derived eco-enzyme against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, in comparison with the standard antibiotic chloramphenicol. An additional objective was to assess the influence of different incubation times on antibacterial effectiveness. An experimental design was employed using the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method to test the antibacterial activity of the pineapple peel eco-enzyme at concentrations of 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%. Chloramphenicol (30 µg) served as the positive control. Statistical analysis revealed that the eco-enzyme exhibited significant antibacterial activity against both S. aureus and E. coli. Post hoc comparisons demonstrated that all eco-enzyme concentrations (100%, 90%, 80%, and 70%) were significantly different from chloramphenicol (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the eco-enzyme effectively inhibited bacterial growth, although through a mechanism distinct from that of synthetic antibiotics. Results from the independent t-test showed no significant difference in antibacterial activity between S. aureus and E. coli (p > 0.05), suggesting that the eco-enzyme possesses broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, comparison between 18-hour and 24-hour incubation periods showed no significant difference (p > 0.05), implying that the inhibitory reaction reached its optimal level within the first 18 hours. The stable antibacterial activity observed after 18 hours indicates that the eco-enzyme maintains good functional stability against both tested bacterial strains.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition in which the mass of erythrocytes and/or circulating hemoglobin does not fulfill its function to provide oxygen. This is due to a decrease in the number of erythrocytes which is often reported as a decrease in hemoglobin concentration for body tissues. Decreased ferritin levels are a marker of iron deficiency. Increased ferritin levels are a marker of metastatic carcinoma, leukemia, lymphoma, liver disease (cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver cancer), excess iron (hemochromatosis), hemosiderosis, anemia (hemolytic, pernicious, thalassemia), infection, chronic and acute inflammation (kidney disease, neuroblastoma), and tissue damage. The study aims to determine the Correlation of Ferritin Levels with Hemoglobin in Patients with Anemia After the Covid-19 Vaccine. This study method is observational with a cross-sectional approach. From the results of testing with SPSS Normality Test, the P value or significance of Kolmogorov-Smirnov from Ferritin and hemoglobin levels> hemoglobin 0.00 is obtained. This means it is smaller than the significance level (α) of 0.05, and means the data is not normally distributed. The correlation analysis of ferritin and h tested with Spearman correlation due to non-normal distribution obtained a sig value of 0.001 <0.05, thus this means H1 is accepted. And based on the Correlation Coefficient value obtained a value of 0.578, which means it has a moderate correlation. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between ferritin levels and hemoglobin in anemia sufferers. Keywords: Ferritin, anemia, Covid-19 Vaccine
