Abstract

A food made from soybeans has a nutritional content in the form of protein, namely tofu. The principle of making tofu is made from white soybeans and the process is soaked in water, ground until smooth, boiled, filtered then separate the tofu dregs and filtrate (water) and added coagulants and food additives (BTP) then molded, but there are differences in the process of making tofu. Silken tofu has a soft texture and the process of making the curd is not pressed and not separated from the liquid so it resembles jelly. Yellow tofu has a yellow color from the addition of turmeric juice solution in the manufacturing process and its dense texture. Pong tofu has a distinctive feature after the manufacturing process is fried first before being packaged. To determine the differences in protein profiles, protein profile analysis was carried out using the SDS-PAGE method, for samples of silken tofu, yellow tofu and raw pong tofu. This type of research is descriptive analytical. The first analysis of total protein content with a standard curve and using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, then continued with protein profile analysis using an SDS-PAGE electrophoresis tool. Results of total protein content and protein profile Silken tofu has a total protein content of 0.63 µg/µL and 1 protein band. Yellow tofu has a total protein content of 0.79 µg/µL and 2 protein bands. Pong tofu has a total protein content of 1.10 µg/µL and 4 protein bands. The difference in the process of the three tofus can affect the protein content of tofu, which can increase or decrease

Abstract

Typhoid fever is an acute infectious disease caused by Salmonella typhi germs, mainly affecting the digestive tract with symptoms of fever for more than 7 days. In Indonesia alone, the incidence rate for this disease is estimated to be around 300-810 cases per 100,00 population per year. Tamarind leaves with flavonoid content can inhibit anti-inflammatory activity. This study aims to determine the immunomodulatory effect of tamarind leaf extract (Tamarindus indica L). Against the number and type of leukocyte cells in balb/c mice infected with Salmonella typhi bacteria. In this study using the experimental group method of Balb/c male mice. Pure form (Tamarindus indica L.) shows immunomodulatory activity such as an increase in the number and type of leukocytes. The research sample was 25 Balb/c male mice weighing 20-30 grams which were then divided into 5 treatment groups. The dose variation is 50 mg/kg BW, 75 mg/kg BW, and 100 mg/kg BW orally for 6 days. Then on day 7 was infected using Salmonella typhi bacteria. Statistical test results showed that the dose groups of 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg BW were not significantly different from the negative control (p>0.05).

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease in patients results from the colonization of the periurethral area by gastrointestinal bacterial flora resulting in colonization of the urethra. Pathogens then migrate to the bladder, express fimbriae and adhesins, and cause colonization and invasion of bladder umbrella cells. The immune system then activates an inflammatory response with neutrophil infiltration to eradicate the bacteria. Bacteria that survive through the immune system produce toxins and proteases that damage host cells. The bacteria then provide essential nutrients for defense. The bacteria then begin to move to the kidneys, once colonized in the kidneys, the bacteria can release toxins that damage kidney cells in the host. The infection then penetrates the renal tubular epithelial barrier causing bacteriuria and kidney damage. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship or correlation of urine albumin creatinine results to bacteriuria. This research method is observational analytic. The sampling technique used was Quota sampling using 44 respondents who did not take antibiotics for 1 week and did not use a catheter. Bacteriuria was examined using microscopic examination method with malbin staining. Data analysis using the chi-square test, based on the results of the comparison between the results of the urine albumin creatinine ratio to bacteriuria, the results obtained p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between the results of urine albumin creatinine ratio to bacteriuria.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is a highly prevalent infectious disease in Indonesia, reaching 25% in 2013. Antibiotic therapy remains the primary treatment option; however, irrational use has led to bacterial resistance. Therefore, alternative treatments based on natural ingredients are needed. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and lemon peel (Citrus limon) essential oils contain bioactive compounds such as linalool, linalyl acetate, DL- limonene, and γ-terpinene, which possess potential antibacterial properties. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of a combination of lavender and lemon essential oils against ARI-causing bacteria. The research was conducted experimentally in the laboratory using the disc diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA). Test samples included lavender oil, lemon oil, their combination, positive control (ciprofloxacin 5 µg), and negative control (aquadest). The antibacterial activity was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with four replications. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with a 95% confidence level. Results showed inhibition zones ranging from 13–20.5 mm in E. coli, S. aureus, and K. pneumoniae; slight inhibition against S. pyogenes; and no activity against P. aeruginosa. The highest effectiveness was observed in F1 against E. coli and F3 against S. aureus. The combination of lavender and lemon essential oils shows potential to be developed as natural antibacterial agents supporting alternative therapy for ARI

Abstract

Anemia is a global health problem frequently affecting adolescent girls, characterized by hemoglobin levels below normal. The main causes of anemia include inadequate iron intake and unhealthy lifestyle habits. This study aimed to determine the differences in hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC) before and after consuming iron tablets among anemic adolescent girls. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest conducted in April–May 2025. The subjects were 28 female students of Setia Budi University selected using purposive sampling. Data collection included laboratory examination of hemoglobin and erythrocyte indices as well as questionnaire responses. The intervention consisted of daily iron tablet supplementation for 20 days. The results showed that the median hemoglobin level increased from 11.1 g/dL (10.3–11.7) to 11.6 g/dL (10.8–12.1). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test indicated a significant difference in hemoglobin levels before and after supplementation (p < 0.001). Erythrocyte indices also improved, with mean MCV increasing from 74.03 ± 5.9 fL to 74.52 ± 7.6 fL, MCH from 22.76 ± 2.5 pg to 25.21 ± 3.1 pg, and MCHC from 30.77 ± 1.3% to 33.35 ± 2.4%. The paired t-test confirmed significant differences in MCV, MCH, and MCHC before and after iron tablet consumption. There were significant differences in hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte indices before and after iron tablet supplementation among anemic adolescent girls.

Abstract

Intestinal nematodes are primarily transmitted through the soil. In the human body, the worms travel through the bloodstream to the heart, lungs, and throat, then are swallowed and enter the intestines. Severe worm infections can lead to malnutrition and impaired growth and development. The aim of this study was to determine the difference in effectiveness between the Harada Mori method and the stool method in measuring the association between STH infection and cattle breeders in Neggara Bungbungan Hamlet. The research method used was quantitative. This study was conducted at the Parasitology Laboratory of Noor Huda Mustofa University from April 5-19, 2025. The sample size was 25 respondents suspected of having worms, whose erythrocyte levels were then examined. Data were collected using a questionnaire and IBM SPSS 25, presented in tabular form, and then explained in narrative form. STH infection in the stool method was classified as high, with 23 eggs (92%) found, and in the Harada Mori method, 17 larvae (68%). The results of the marginal homogeneity statistical test obtained a p-value of 0.000 < 0.005. The relationship between STH infection in the stool method and eosinophil levels obtained a p-value of 0.016 < 0.005 using the Kruskal Wallis statistical test. There is a significant difference between the stool method and the Harada Mori method. There is a significant correlation between the stool method and eosinophil levels.

Abstract

Urinary tract infection is an inflammation caused by bacterial proliferation, especially Escherichia coli as the main cause and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a nosocomial cause. Torch ginger flowers (Etlingera elatior) can be used as an alternative natural antibiotic because they contain flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, and steroids that have antibacterial potential. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the inhibitory power of torch ginger flower methanol extract against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, and to analyze whether there is a significant difference in the inhibition zone at the extract concentration with the inhibition zone in the positive control ciprofloxacin. This study used a cross-sectional experimental analytical design. Extraction was carried out by the maceration method using methanol as a solvent. Phytochemical tests were used to identify active compounds, while antibacterial tests used the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The inhibition zone was measured using a caliper and analyzed by the Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that the extract positively contained flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, and steroids, producing an inhibitory power of 6–8 mm on Escherichia coli and 6–7 mm on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while ciprofloxacin produced 34 mm on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 10 mm on Escherichia coli. There was a significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) between all extract concentrations and the positive control. In conclusion, the methanol extract of torch ginger flowers has antibacterial activity, but no concentration was able to match the effectiveness of ciprofloxacin.
