Abstract

Learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) continues to face various challenges, particularly in fostering students' positive beliefs about their learning abilities. Limited exposure to English, inadequate environmental support, and learning experiences have prevented many students from consistently demonstrating a growth mindset when facing learning challenges. This study aims to analyze students' growth mindset in English language learning and to examine the contextual factors influencing its development. The study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design supported by quantitative data as complementary evidence. The participants of this study were eighth-grade students. Data were collected using a growth mindset questionnaire and semi-structured interviews that had been validated through expert judgment. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis to classify students' mindset profiles and thematic analysis to interpret the interview findings. The results revealed that most students demonstrated a transitional mindset profile, characterized by a belief in the importance of effort but an inability to consistently apply that belief in challenging learning situations. The development of students' growth mindset was influenced by limited exposure to English, family beliefs, and the emotional climate of the classroom. This study concludes that growth mindset is a dynamic construct that develops through the interaction between individual factors and the learning environment. The findings imply the importance of developing instructional strategies that strengthen students' positive beliefs, enhance perseverance, and create a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages active participation in English language learning.

Abstract

The lack of variation in learning methods and media leads to a decline in student learning motivation towards literacy activities. This condition impacts low student learning outcomes in class and makes the learning process less interesting and less meaningful. This study aims to analyze the design, validity, practicality, and effectiveness of literacy calendar media in Indonesian language learning. This development research uses the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects were third-grade elementary school students. Data collection was carried out through observation, questionnaires, and tests to obtain information on the quality of the media developed and its impact on student learning outcomes. The results of the study indicate that the literacy calendar media meets the criteria of being valid, practical, and effective for use in Indonesian language learning, especially in the material on effective sentences. The use of this media can help students understand the material more easily, increase student engagement in learning activities, and support the improvement of reading and writing skills. The implications of this study indicate that the literacy calendar media can be used as an alternative innovative learning media that supports the strengthening of literacy culture, increases learning motivation, and helps teachers create more active, interesting, and student-centered learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

The low level of English literacy skills, particularly reading and writing skills, remains a challenge in elementary school learning because students still experience difficulties in understanding vocabulary, simple texts, and constructing appropriate sentences. This condition is influenced by the use of learning media that are not yet fully interactive, contextual, and capable of facilitating students’ active involvement in the learning process. This study aims to develop an Augmented Reality-assisted Student Worksheet (LKPD) to improve elementary school students’ English reading and writing skills. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model. The research subjects consisted of material experts, media experts, one fifth-grade teacher, and 16 fifth-grade students as trial subjects. Data were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and tests using validation instruments, user response instruments, and reading and writing ability tests. Data analysis was conducted using qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis, prerequisite tests, paired sample t-test, and N-Gain analysis. The results showed that the Augmented Reality-assisted Student Worksheet met the feasibility criteria based on expert evaluations and obtained positive responses from users. Therefore, the Augmented Reality-assisted Student Worksheet is feasible to be used as an innovative learning medium to support the improvement of English literacy among elementary school students. This study implies the development of technology-based learning media that are more interactive, contextual, and appropriate to the characteristics of elementary school students.

Abstract

Learning practices remain largely focused on memorization and lower-level comprehension, limiting students' ability to analyze, evaluate, and construct ideas critically. This study aimed to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the scientific approach in enhancing elementary school students' literacy skills and HOTS. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The research participants consisted of two fourth-grade classes in an elementary school, comprising 26 students in the experimental group and 26 students in the control group. Data were collected through literacy tests, HOTS tests, and teacher observation sheets. The research instruments were designed to assess students' abilities to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and respond to texts, as well as their abilities to analyze, evaluate, and generate ideas based on the learning materials. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, homogeneity tests, Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), and N-Gain analysis. The findings revealed that the scientific approach was more effective than conventional instruction in improving students' literacy skills and HOTS. The experimental group also demonstrated better learning improvement than the control group. The study concludes that the scientific approach effectively promotes the integrated development of literacy skills and higher-order thinking skills through active, critical, and reflective learning processes. The findings imply the importance of implementing the scientific approach as a pedagogical foundation for creating meaningful Indonesian language learning that supports the development of twenty-first-century competencies.

Abstract

Students' low language skills, particularly in speaking and writing, remain a problem affecting the quality of Indonesian language learning in elementary schools. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in improving students' language skills in Indonesian language learning. This study employed a quantitative approach using classroom action research based on the Kemmis and McTaggart design. The research subjects consisted of 23 students, including 12 male students and 11 female students. The data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation using observation sheets, language skills tests, and learning documentation as the research instruments. The data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis by calculating the mean scores and the percentage of learning mastery to evaluate the achievement of the success indicators in each cycle. The findings showed that the implementation of the PjBL model consistently improved students' language skills in the aspects of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also enhancing students' participation, collaboration, and active engagement throughout the learning process. It can be concluded that the PjBL model is effective in improving students' language skills through project-oriented learning and meaningful learning experiences. The findings of this study imply that the PjBL model can be implemented as an alternative innovative learning approach to improve the quality of Indonesian language learning and to continuously develop students' language skills in elementary schools.

Abstract

Research on speech acts in literary works has predominantly focused on analyzing a single type of speech act, resulting in a limited understanding of the relationship among locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts in constructing communicative meaning. In addition, studies examining the factors underlying the use of speech acts in dialogues between characters remain relatively limited. This study aims to analyze the types of speech acts, namely locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts, and to identify the factors underlying the use of speech acts in Sendiri, a novel by Tere Liye. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a content analysis design. The research subject was the novel Sendiri by Tere Liye, which contained 180 utterances as the research data. The data were collected using the documentation method through reading and note-taking techniques, with a speech act classification guideline and a data analysis sheet as the research instruments. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of data analysis, which consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that Sendiri contains three types of speech acts: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts, with illocutionary speech acts being the most dominant. Therefore, the use of speech acts in the novel not only represents linguistic functions but also reflects the relationship among context, communicative purposes, and interactions between characters. The findings of this study contribute to the development of pragmatic studies and may serve as a reference for language learning and literary appreciation.

Abstract

Feminism and women's experiences in unfair relationships are the main topics of Paris Paloma's song called "Labour." By using feminist stylistics and feminist critical discourse analysis theory established by Sara Mills to analyze the meaning of feminism and gender power relations in the song. Applying qualitative descriptive techniques, song lyrics were examined at the word, phrase, and discourse levels as the main data. The results of the research indicate that men are positioned as the dominating party, while women are portrayed as the group responsible for emotional, household, and reproductive tasks. The song's language challenges listeners to consider patriarchal traditions, gender injustice, and double standards, which are still happening nowadays.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the limited integration of collaborative values in English language learning in elementary schools, which tends to be teacher-centered and utilizes minimal interactive digital media. This condition results in the strengthening of collaborative character not being optimally facilitated through teaching materials. This study aims to analyze the integration and development of collaborative values in bilingual digital storybooks. The study used a Design and Development (D&D) approach with the subjects being the developed bilingual digital storybooks, and involved two Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL) experts and two fifth-grade English teachers as evaluators. Data were collected through document analysis and expert evaluation sheets using a five-point Likert scale. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively through content analysis to identify the values of caring, sharing, and cooperation and their levels of development, and quantitatively descriptively to analyze the results of expert assessments. The results showed that collaborative values have been systematically integrated through narratives, illustrations, and interactive tasks, and developed gradually from developing to advanced levels. Expert assessments also indicated that the storybooks have good quality, relevance, and suitability as learning media. This study concludes that bilingual digital storybooks effectively support English language learning while strengthening collaborative character. These findings have implications for the development of digital learning media that integrate language competencies and character education in elementary schools.
