Abstract

As COVID-19 Pandemic hit the world, many fields of life need to face some changes. One of the affected areas is academic activity. Since the beginning of the outbreak, academic activity has been switched from class meeting to online meeting. There are various reactions towards the change of academic behavior among students. This article is aimed at classifying the emotions carried out in illocutionary acts used by the students of Politeknik Caltex Riau in regards to online learning issue which manifest in their writing. This research is a descriptive qualitative analysis in which data were collected from students’ essay writing under the selected topic. From 30 articles of students’ essay writing, 59 sentences were taken as data source. In analyzing the emotional classification, Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence is used. Together with this theory, Speech Acts Theory by Yule (2000) and Illocutionary Acts Theory by Searle (1997) are used. The result of the study shows that there are four kinds of illocutionary acts used by the students in their writing with expressives appeared to be the most frequent illocutionary acts followed by representatives, directives and commissives respectively. Abstract

Based on the preliminary research, it was found that Junior High School Students of IT Al-Birru Pekanbaru’s speaking skill regarding to recount text was very poor. So, the researcher decided to conduct a Classroom Action Research by using Video Subscribe to improve their speaking skill. It can be stated that the research aims at improving the students of Junior High School of IT Al-Birru Pekanbaru’s speaking skill by using Video Subscribe. The respondents of the research were twenty students of grade VIII.1, Junior High School of IT Al-Birru Pekanbaru. This research was done in a cycle with four meetings and a test. For collecting the data, a test, an observation checklist, field notes, and an interview were distributed. After analyzing the data in cycle I, it was found that the students' speaking ability was improved. It was proved by the students’ speaking criteria score; accent was about 60; grammar was about 74; vocabulary was about 79; fluency was about 72; and comprehension was about 78. So, the average score of students’ speaking ability was 72.4. This students’ speaking improvement was influenced by a factor namely interest. In the other hands, this video subscribe was very interesting media so it could foster the students’ participation and confidence during the process of learning activity especially in speaking regarding to recount text. No more students were inactive. They tended to be focus and active in doing communication such as addressing questions and giving comments.

Abstract

By interviewing four students at the Manajement Study Program in STIE Tribuana, the researcher found that the students face some problems when reading English texts. The problems found were important to be investigated because students’ reading comprehension play an essential part to improve their English ability from reading text. This research was conducted at STIE Tribuana. This research used descriptive quantitative approach. The respondents were divided into two groups: experimental group and comparison group. The experimental group was treated by using PQ4R strategy while comparison group was treated using CSR strategy. Each group consisted of 14 extroverted students and introverted students. The data were collected using reading test (35 items in the form of multiple choice) and personality questionnaire. The result revealed that there was no significant difference between students who use PQ4R and those who use Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on their reading comprehension. The second one was there was no a significant difference between introverted students and extroverted students on their reading comprehension. The last one was that there was no a significant interaction between reading strategy and personality in their effect on students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the significant differences in achievement between the students who are taught speaking by using the Pecha Kucha and those who are taught by using the Picture Series. This study was an experimental research which employed a quasi experimental design of two classes: one as the experimental A group taught using Pecha Kucha, and the other was the experiment B group taught using the Picture Series. Each class had 21 and 20 students. So the total number in the sample were 41 students in second semesters of English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Lancang Kuning University. The instruments was a speaking test. The data from tests were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The result shows that Asym. Sig. (2-tailed)> Significant level that is 0.314 > 0,05, so Ho is accepted in which the students who were taught speaking through Pecha Kucha achieved a similar performance with the students who were taught speaking through Picture Series. This means that there is no significance difference in achievement between the students in both groups. Furthermore, the students were seen to be more active and creative in expressing their ideas.

Abstract

This study explores hypnoteaching method to increase students’ senior high school Pekanbaru motivation in learning English. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design and provide pre-test and post-test to the both control class groups and experimental groups where SMA Handayani students and SMA PGRI students as research participants. The findings showed that 1) low student motivation is one of the causes of low student learning outcomes, 2) a classroom atmosphere to support the learning process is not built yet, 3) teachers do not found yet the right method to increase and keep students learning motivation. Based on the results of the research data processed using the paired-sample t test, there were found significant differences, namely before and after implementing the hypnoteaching method in learning English with alpha results less than 0.05. This study is beneficial in enriching literature in the scope of English education study programs, especially in Indonesia and others adopting English as a foreign language as a matter of applying appropriate and a more effective learning methods.

Abstract

Conflicts of ethnicity and religions that recently occurred in Indonesia portrayed that the concept of tolerance built over the years is getting to be forgotten. Currently, the occurance of polarization results the dispute of having mutual superior feeling among groups. Intolerance does not only occur among inter-religious groups, but also occur between community organizations (ormas), football supporter, political organizations, to the House of Representatives member both national and regional levels. This study aims to find the meaning of tolerance expressed in K. H. A. Hasyim Muzadi speech at the Presidential Palace. The qualitative method is used by using critical discourse analysis approach. Through analysis of clause transitivity and the rules of macro, researchers found macro propositions that contain the meaning of tolerance. Those macro propositions represented in the topics of justice, management of economy, law, and social, protection and freedom in religion, self-integrity and social, economic and law justice, nationalism.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out whether the students commit punctuation errors in their narrative writing or not and to identify the types of errors which are made by the students in terms of Surface Strategy Taxonomy. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The instrument used for collecting the data is writing task in narrative text, consisting of recognition and production task. The data was, then, analyzed based on procedures used in error analysis of the descriptive approach. The results show that a number of students committed erroneous data either in recognition or production task on the use of punctuation marks in terms of omission, addition, substitution, and misplacement.

Abstract

In communication act within facebook, the authors not only expressesed their thoughts and feelings, but also tried to convince readers. These efforts indicated that the author showed their "stance" in the text. In the appraisal system, these related to the aspect of engagement. The engagement aspect describes the author's 'stance' based on the source of the text conveyed by the author. the source of text consisted of internal voice (authorial voice) and external voice (other’s voice). The text type consisted of monoglossic text and heteroglossic texts. This study was aimed to identify the characteristics of language realizations in Indonesian evaluative texts which showed the author's stance from the facebook account. This study used two approaches, namely qualitative and quantitative. Qualitatively, this study used appraisal, semantic, and pragmatic analysis, while quantitatively, this study used corpus analysis to identify the frequency of use of these types of text. The research data was taken from the facebook status of the accounts Kata Kita (KK) and Rakyat Oposisi (RO). From these two accounts, the data showed that both accounts tend to negotiate their messages by being characterized by the use of heteroglossic text types (71.42% for KK and 76.73% for RO). The realization of engagement in the use of Indonesian evaluative text from these two accounts can be seen in the use of: particle ('-lah', 'mah', 'nih'), epistemic adverb ('Sesungguhnya'), demonstrative pronoun ('itu'/ 'ini'), noun ('dasar'), conditional sentences, expectational interjection ('semoga'), excalamation, and the use of survey data and headline texts as alternative voices.

Abstract

TOEFL is a need for college students to continue their study at a well-known university and need to acquire a bachelor's degree. However, COVID-19 led to a primary catastrophe that hit most countries in the world. The implementation of social distancing or distance restrictions imposed by the government has made training and learning carried out, one of which is the usage of an internet interface software solution. This study aims to determine students' perceptions of the application of Zoom-based TOEFL training. Descriptive research by giving online-interview to 44 students who took part in the TOEFL training organized by Language Institute of Business Economics Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Pringsewu. The positive perception of this Zoom-based TOEFL training is the flexibility, the students can manage to do different activities whilst still join in it. The negative perceptions or weaknesses are the ineffective training time, the network disruption, and the different way in explanation.

Abstract

This research aimed at describing the difficulties in online learning faced by the students during the first semester of Academic Year 2020/2021. The method of the research was descriptive quantitative by using online questionnaire with four indicators of learning obstacles for collecting the data. The sample of the research was 35 students of English Education Department of Faculty of Education and Teachers’ Training of Universitas Lancang Kuning. After analyzing the data by using descriptive statistics, it is found that the major difficulty is about the students’ physical constraints indicator. The score was about M=3.11 with “moderate” level. Then, non-social environment indicator was about M=2.57 with “moderate” level. The next difficulty was facility. The mean score was about 2.8 with “moderate” level. The next difficulty was from the educator. The mean score was about 2.13 with “moderate” level. The last difficulty was the students’ psychological constraints. The mean score was about 2.07 with “moderate” level. In conclusion, online learning is better implemented in well preparation. It needs all the elements’ readiness such as students, educators, institution, and also the government. It must include the mental and physical readiness. For organizing the online learning, both students and educator should be supported by facility such as qualified laptop or gadget and also fast internet connection. Besides that, lecturer should have qualified competence in organizing the online class so the students motivate in following the class. The last is about the environment. Having well and comfortable environment basically increases the students and lecturer motivation in conducting the online class.
