ARSHI Veterinary Letters (ARSHI Vet Lett) (e-ISSN 2581-2416) is an open access, peer-reviewed, online journal that publishes original manuscript should be produced from latest scientific results which not last than 5 years in all areas of veterinary sciences. Manuscripts is written in Indonesian or English ARSHI Vet Lett includes a rapidly and briefly updated scientific study with not only limited to reports of case study but also covering all aspects of practical clinical science in veterinary medical services. ARSHI Vet Lett is published by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Bogor Agricultural University (FKH IPB) in collaboration with the Indonesian Veterinary Hospital Association (ARSHI). This journal is published since 2017 (first in mid of the year, volume 1, published in 2 issue i.e. August and November), and next volume will publish 4 (four) times in 1 (one) year, i.e. in February, May, August, and November.

Abstract

Fowl cholera, caused by Pasteurella multocida, remains a major threat to poultry health and productivity. This case study identified the etiological agent associated with clinical disease and gross lesions in laying hens from a commercial farm in Sumedang, West Java, Indonesia. The investigations included necropsy, bacterial culture, Gram staining, and biochemical characterization. Affected birds showed torticollis, conjunctivitis, mild wattle and comb swelling, respiratory rales, reduced feed intake, decreased egg production, greenish-white diarrhea, and lethargy. Necropsy revealed hemorrhagic lesions in the trachea, lungs, and intestinal mucosa, with absent developing ovarian follicles. Culture on blood and chocolate agar produced whitish-gray translucent colonies. Gram staining showed Gram-negative coccobacilli singly or in pairs. Biochemical findings supported the identification of P. multocida. Overall findings were consistent with chronic fowl cholera and underscored the importance of vaccination, biosecurity, and early surveillance to limit economic losses in commercial layer farms.

Abstract

Jejunal intussusception is an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction in dogs and is associated with abnormal motility, enteritis, parasitic infection, and foreign body ingestion. The diagnosis, surgical management, and outcome of a 3-year-old Poodle (5 kg) are described. The dog presented with vomiting, anorexia, weakness, abdominal pain, and foreign body ingestion. Abdominal radiography and hematology supported the diagnosis of intestinal obstruction and inflammatory response. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed jejunojejunal intussusception with congestion and hemorrhage without necrosis or perforation. The segment was reduced and repositioned without bowel resection or anastomosis. The abdominal wall was closed in layers, followed by postoperative therapy and monitoring, with wound healing by day 7 without complications.

Abstract

Inguinal hernia is an uncommon condition in cats, but it may lead to significant complications when the urinary bladder is involved. This report describes a case of right inguinal hernia with urinary bladder lateroflexion in an 8-month-old intact female Domestic Shorthair cat presenting with inguinal swelling and dysuria. During in-hospital observation, no urination occurred for over 12 hours. Physical examination revealed a mass in the right inguinal region. Lateral and ventrodorsal projections confirmed herniation of the urinary bladder into the inguinal canal, with deviation and flexion. Surgical correction was performed by herniorrhaphy, involving repositioning the urinary bladder into the abdominal cavity and closure of the hernial ring. Postoperative evaluation showed stable condition, normal urination, and uncomplicated wound healing.

Abstract

This case report describes the clinical outcome of a dog with cutaneous myiasis treated with topical tobacco leaf infusion (Nicotiana tabacum). An 8-year-old male local dog from Tabanan, Bali, was presented with a foul-smelling open wound at the base of the tail. Physical examination revealed fly larvae within the wound, and cutaneous myiasis was diagnosed. A 2.5% w/v tobacco leaf infusion was prepared by heating 5 g of dried tobacco leaf simplicia in 200 mL of water at 90°C for 30 min, followed by cooling and filtration. The infusion was applied topically at 3–4 drops into the wound twice daily for 10 days. Manual larval extraction and wound suturing were not performed. Larvae emerged from the wound after topical application. Clinical improvement was observed during follow-up, with scab formation on day 7 and complete wound closure by day 14. No adverse clinical signs were reported during the observation period.

Abstract

Bladder stone is one of the most frequently encountered urological disorders in land tortoises kept as pets, closely related to husbandry practices. This retrospective clinic-based study estimated the prevalence of radiographically confirmed bladder stones and explored associated husbandry factors in pet tortoises examined at an exotic animal clinic in Jakarta. Medi-cal records of 42 land tortoises examined between October 4 and December 1, 2025, were reviewed. The extracted data included species, diet, water access, housing system, clinical findings, and radiographic results. Seven tortoises were diagnosed with bladder stones, giving a clinic-based prevalence of 16.7% (7/42). All affected tortoises were Centrochelys sulcata. In univariable exact analyses, species was associated with bladder stone occurrence, whereas diet, water access, and housing showed uncertain associations because of small subgroup sizes and missing data. These findings suggest that C. sulcata presented to exotic animal clinics may warrant routine radiographic screening, but larger multicenter studies are needed to clarify the role of husbandry factors.

Abstract

Pink eye, or infectious keratoconjunctivitis, is a contagious disease that can impair vision and welfare if untreated. This case report describes the diagnosis and management of Pseudomonas aeruginosa-associated infectious keratoconjunctivitis in a sheep in Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A 3-year-old female fat-tailed sheep weighing 30 kg presented with bilateral redness for two days. Clinical examination revealed photophobia, corneal opacity, lacrimation, and conjunctival inflammation. Hematological examination revealed leukocytosis and neutrophilia, indicating an inflammatory reaction. Bacterial culture of a conjunctival swab identified P. aeruginosa, although antibiotic susceptibility testing was not performed. Based on the history, clinical signs, physical examination, hematological findings, and bacteriological confirmation, the sheep was diagnosed with infectious keratoconjunctivitis associated with P. aeruginosa infection and a favorable prognosis. Empirical treatment consisted of intramuscular dihydrostreptomycin sulfate–procaine penicillin G at 0.1 mL/kg body weight, intramuscular vitamin B12 at 0.01 mg/kg body weight, and topical oxytetracycline to both eyes. Improvement occurred two days after treatment, with reduced lacrimation and clearer corneas.

Abstract

Purwoceng (Pimpinella alpina) is a medicinal plant with phytoestrogenic properties that may affect reproductive development. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of purwoceng root extract administered during pregnancy on offspring growth and sexual maturation in rats. The measured parameters were body weight gain in male and female offspring, age at vaginal opening, and estrous cycle length in female offspring. The results demonstrated that maternal administration of purwoceng extract increased body weight gain in offspring and accelerated the onset of puberty, as indicated by earlier vaginal opening, while no significant differences were observed in estrous cycle length. In conclusion, purwoceng root extract exhibits anabolic and estrogenic effects that promote growth and sexual maturation in offspring without disrupting the normal estrous cycle.

Abstract

Digital mast cell tumours (MCTs) in dogs present a surgical challenge because their acral location often limits the achievement of adequate oncologic margins. This report describes the clinical presentation, surgical management, and histopathological confirmation of a digital MCT in an geriatric dog. A 15-year-old mixed-breed female dog weighing 7.6 kg was presented with a mass in the interdigital region of the limb. Clinical examination revealed that the dog remained active, with no obvious abnormalities in posture or gait. Because digital mast cell tumors (MCTs) are difficult to manage surgically owing to limited tissue for adequate margins, surgical excision was selected. Intraoperatively, the mass was found to extend around digit IV, requiring complete excision with digit amputation. Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of a mast cell tumour with infiltrative neoplastic mast cell proliferation. Postoperative management included wound cleansing, modified Robert Jones bandaging, amoxicillin-clavulanate, prednisolone, and topical hypochlorous acid-based wound care

Abstract

Repeat breeding in cattle is failure to establish pregnancy after three or more services or artificial inseminations despite cycling and no abnormalities. This causes losses from reduced conception, repeated insemination, prolonged calving interval, maintenance costs, and calf production. This review evaluates mechanisms and management, emphasizing fertilization failure, embryonic death, and uterine function. Evidence shows that it is multifactorial, involving poor oocyte competence, mistimed insemination, endocrine dysfunction, heat stress, sperm transport failure, subclinical endometritis, impaired embryo–maternal communication, endometrial gene expression, and inadequate receptivity. Management requires precise strategies tailored to the pathway.

Abstract

Sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) are kept as companion animals and may be predisposed to tail injuries due to aggression, self-mutilation, or environmental trauma. This report describes the clinical presentation, surgical management, and postoperative outcomes of tail amputation in a sugar glider with a coccygeal fracture complicated by self-mutilation. A 2-year-old intact male sugar glider presented with reduced appetite, repeated tail biting, and a five-day history of tail injury. Physical examination revealed an open wound with swelling, purulent discharge, pain on palpation, and crepitus. Radiography confirmed a complete transverse fracture of the distal coccygeal vertebra. Tail amputation was performed under anesthesia using 2% lidocaine at 4 mg/kg. The fractured segment was removed, and the skin was closed using simple interrupted sutures. Postoperatively, the patient was administered enrofloxacin, meloxicam, and topical gentamicin. Complete wound closure occurred by postoperative day 7, without complications.
