Abstract

Background: University students, as late adolescents transitioning into young adulthood, require adequate nutritional intake to achieve optimal nutritional status. Nutritional knowledge and attitudes play an essential role in shaping healthy eating behaviors; however, previous studies indicate that the majority of students (>70%) still have a limited understanding of daily nutritional requirements. The use of digital-based educational media, such as e-booklets, is considered a promising strategy due to its accessibility, flexibility, and interactive features. Objectives: To analyze the effect of e-booklet based nutrition education on students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding nutritional requirements. Methods: A quasi experimental study with a one-group pre test and post test design was conducted among 60 active undergraduate students from the Fashion Design Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan, selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using pre test and post test questionnaires and analyzed using the paired sample t test and the Wilcoxon test. Results: The results showed an increase in mean knowledge scores by 20.58 points and attitude scores by 7.91 points after the intervention, with a statistically significant effect (p-value = 0.000). These findings indicate that e-booklet based nutrition education significantly improved students’ knowledge and attitudes toward nutritional requirements. Conclusions: E-booklet educational media is effective in enhancing students’ knowledge and attitudes toward nutrition. This approach can be recommended as an innovative alternative in nutrition education and as a practical health promotion strategy for adolescents and young adults. E-booklets can be integrated into school curricula as a more engaging and interactive method of nutrition instruction.

Abstract

Background: Based on the 2023 SKI report, the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women reached 27.7%, with a higher rate of 31.4% among women aged 25-35 years. Anemia in pregnancy is generally managed with Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation. Still, adherence to IFA consumption remains low due to side effects such as nausea and digestive disorders. As an alternative, the Multiple Micronutrient Supplement (MMS) was introduced, which can improve anemia in pregnant women and is 13% more effective than IFA in preventing Low Birth Weight. Objectives: To explore the acceptance of MMS among pregnant women in Kulon Progo District. Methods: Qualitative research with an exploratory case study design. Thirteen informants were selected through purposive sampling, including eight pregnant women as main informants and five supporting informants: two midwives, two pharmacists from Community Health Centers, and one representative from the District Health Office. The study was conducted at the Kulon Progo District Health Office and at the Wates and Samigaluh 2 Primary Health Centers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Atlas.ti. Results: Acceptance of MMS was influenced by knowledge of MMS, consumption experiences (taste, aroma, and side effects), and support from health workers. Some pregnant women stated that they got bored and did not continue consumption. However, consistent involvement of health workers improved acceptance. Conclusions: Acceptance of MMS among pregnant women is influenced by perceptions, product characteristics, and health worker support. Midwives provide education and monitoring, while pharmacists manage MMS stock recording and reporting.

Abstract

Background: Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing among Indonesia’s productive and pre-elderly populations. Cardiometabolic risk factors such as obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia substantially contribute to this burden, accounting for approximately 70-75% of all deaths. The workplace offers a strategic location for promotional and preventive interventions through Worksite Health and Wellness Programs (WHWPs). Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of WHWPs in improving body composition, fitness, and cardiometabolic risk factors among employees. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre–post test was applied to 35 employees aged 30–60 years with BMI ≥25 kg/m². The 12-week intervention included nutrition education and combined cardio and strength training. The variables measured included anthropometry, body composition, fitness, blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol, dietary intake, and nutritional knowledge. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, repeated measures ANOVA, and Friedman’s test. Results: Significant improvements were observed in body composition, with reductions in body fat percentage (from 32.81 to 31.46%; p-value=0.005), subcutaneous fat (from 28.67 to 26.84; p-value=0.042), and an increase in skeletal muscle mass (from 25.70 to 26.45; p-value=0.015). Fitness improved significantly (from 32.39 to 35.80; p-value<0.001). Total cholesterol decreased (from 199.94 to 177.40 mg/dL; p-value=0.003), while blood glucose and blood pressure did not change significantly. Natrium intake decreased (from 3209 to 1740 mg; p-value=0.013) and nutrition knowledge scores increased (from 51.65 to 57.33; p-value=0.006). Conclusions: WHWPs effectively improved body composition and fitness and reduced cardiometabolic risk factors among employees.

Abstract

Background: Adequate nutrition for toddlers aged 3-5 years is essential for optimal growth and development, while improper feeding practices increase the risk of malnutrition and stunting. According to the 2024 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey. Nutrition education for mothers is a key preventive strategy, with short videos considered more engaging and accessible. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of short videos on mothers’ attitudes and behaviors in feeding aged toddlers 3-5 years at Kalirungkut Health Center, Surabaya. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test was applied to 62 mothers of toddlers, selected through simple random sampling. Participants were divided into an intervention group (short videos) and a control group (PowerPoint). Data on attitudes and feeding behaviors were collected using validated questionnaires and analyzed with Paired t-test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: Significant improvements were observed in mothers’ attitudes and behaviors after the short video intervention. Attitude scores increased from 59.71±6.095 to 65.84±3.067 (p-value<0.001), while behavior scores rose from 70.78±3.574 to 78.39±2.679 (p-value<0.001). In the control group, no significant changes were found in either attitudes (p-value=0.43) or behaviors (p-value=0.174). Conclusions: Short video-based nutrition education is more effective than PowerPoint in improving mothers’ attitudes and behaviors in toddler feeding. Short videos are practical, engaging, and highly recommended as tools for community nutrition education and public health promotion.

Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding rate in Indonesia was 68%, which were also lower than the targeted national 80%. One such cause is unpreparedness of pregnant women for breastfeeding. In Batak culture, the Moumbasuri method during pregnancy month seven is regarded as a social, spiritual and psychosocial intervention to support pregnant women, but has not been adequately utilised to reinforce breastfeeding preparation. This type of local wisdom can be incorporated into digital media for better readiness toward exclusive breastfeeding among third trimester pregnant mothers. Objective: To develop and evaluate the Technology for Optimal Readiness (TUKKOT) ASI application, grounded in Mambosuri culture, as an educational tool to enhance readiness for exclusive breastfeeding. Methods: The used Research and Development (R&D) model was based on the structure of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE). It was composed by needs analysis, content design, validation with specialists and implementation (40 pregnant women on the third trimester) and evaluated using Wilcox test. Outcomes: The analysis showed that 57.5% of participants had low knowledge, while 47.5% demonstrated good readiness. The application featuring home, Mambosuri, readiness, and profile sections received an expert feasibility score of 88.9%. After a one month period, a user satisfaction level of 90.8% was achieved. Significant improvements were demonstrated through statistical analysis in knowledge (p-value<0.001), family support (p-value<0.005), and readiness for breastfeeding (p-value<0.001). Conclusion: An effective increase in knowledge, family support, and breastfeeding preparedness among women in the third trimester of pregnancy was achieved through the use of the Mambosuri based TUKKOT ASI application. Embedding local wisdom in digital media is one strategic method to support the success of Indonesia’s exclusive breastfeeding program.

Abstract

Background: Unhealthy dietary patterns are one of the main contributors to the high prevalence of nutritional problems in Indonesia. This issue may stem from low nutrition literacy, including limited understanding of food labeling. Therefore, a nutrition education intervention is needed. It is not only to improve comprehension of food labels but also to promote healthier dietary behaviors. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition education using animated videos in improving food label comprehension among housewives in Padang City. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed to 90 housewives residing in Padang City. Respondents were then divided into control and intervention groups. The intervention group received nutrition education using animated videos on food labeling, which were delivered four times over four consecutive weeks. A paired t-test was conducted to assess pre- and post-intervention differences within each group. Results: The findings indicated an increase of 15.5 points in knowledge and 11.0 points in attitude scores within the intervention group. The T-test results showed a significant difference (p-value<0.001 and p-value<0.001) in both knowledge and attitude in the intervention group, while no significant differences were observed in the control group (p-value=0.160 and p-value =0.160). The N-gain scores were 81.15% for knowledge and 50.23% for attitude, suggesting that the video media was effective in improving knowledge, but less effective in enhancing respondents' attitudes toward food labeling. Conclusions: Nutrition education using animated video media proved to be effective in increasing knowledge and understanding, but was not yet effective in improving food labeling attitudes among housewives in Padang City.
