Abstract

Background: Child malnutrition is a global challenge in Indonesia, specifically in Mataram City, primarily attributed to the low coverage of exclusive breastfeeding. One potential strategy to address this challenge is increasing health knowledge through health promotion media, such as conventional and digital booklet. Objectives: This study aims to implement interventions using both conventional and digital booklet media, compare the two types of booklet, and determine which type is more accepted by the community. Methods: A pre-experimental method with a cross-sectional design was conducted using a one-group pretest-posttest approach comprising 96 mothers with infants aged 6 to 24 months in the Cakranegara and Ampenan Puskesmas areas. Data were collected using questionnaires to assess maternal knowledge and attitude both before and after the intervention. The differences in knowledge and attitude were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Test. Results: The results showed that the intervention of digital booklet did not produce a statistically significant difference in the enhancement of knowledge or attitude among the respondents (p-value>0.05). Conversely, the intervention of conventional booklet showed a statistically significant difference in attitude (p-value<0.05), and no significant difference was observed in knowledge (p-value>0.05). Conclusions: The intervention of conventional booklet produced a greater increase in knowledge and attitude compared to digital booklet. Therefore, it can be concluded that conventional booklet is more accepted by the community than digital.

Abstract

Background: As the role of dietitians in clinical and operational settings continues to expand, administrative and management skills have become increasingly important. Therefore, the Skills Enhancement for the Excellent Dietitians (S.E.E.D) training module was developed to strengthen dietitians’ management competencies. Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the newly developed Skills Enhancement for the Excellent Dietitians (S.E.E.D) training module through participants’ perception-based assessment of management skills development, guided by the ADDIE framework. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in April 2021 to evaluate S.E.E.D training module using a structured questionnaire. Fifteen government dietitians (U41 and U44) with at least two years of work experience were purposively selected. The module was evaluated using a government assessment form covering five aspects: (i) content, (ii) implementation, (iii) technical and methodology, (iv) benefits, and (v) facilitator effectiveness. Results: Participants reported high satisfaction across all aspects, with mean scores for training content ranging from 4.9 to 5.0. Implementation scores varied between 4.7 and 4.9, with Session 3 (Managing Challenging Behavior) receiving the highest rating (4.9 ± 0.27), while Session 4 (Motivation) had the lowest (4.5 ± 0.33). Most participants indicated being “Very satisfied” or “Satisfied” with the training techniques used. Conclusions: The S.E.E.D training module was well received by participants and demonstrated a high level of satisfaction, aligning with the evaluation objectives. These results provide a strong foundation for further improvement of the module before wider implementation.

Abstract

Background: School-age children in Aceh are vulnerable to malnutrition, with 24.1% experiencing stunting and 12.3% exhibiting wasting, primarily due to unbalanced diets, skipping breakfast, and unhealthy snacking habits. Objectives: This study evaluates the impact of a School-Based Nutrition Program on nutritional status, anaemia, nutrition knowledge, and Clean and Healthy Behaviour (CHB) among elementary students in Pidie District, Aceh. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre–post study was conducted among 290 elementary students as part of the School-Based Nutrition Program, which included thrice-weekly meal provision, nutrition education, and CHB promotion. Nutritional status (BMI-for-age, height-for-age), anemia (hemoglobin levels), nutrition knowledge, and CHB practices (interviews) were assessed. Data were analyzed using chi-square and t-tests at a 95% confidence level. Results: Anemia prevalence decreased by 4.4%, stunting by 2.0%, and overweight by 4.9%. The height-for-age z-score slightly improved from -1.84±0.93 to -1.78±0.91. Students also showed better nutrition knowledge and CHB practices. While the program had no significant impact on reducing anemia, stunting, and BMI-for-age (p-value=0.120; p-value=0.887; p-value=0.148), it significantly improved nutrition knowledge and CHB behavior (p-value=0.015; and p-value=0.012). Conclusions: The School Based Nutrition Program effectively improved nutrition knowledge and Clean and Healthy Living Behaviour (CHLB). However, the short-term implementation did not yet lead to measurable improvements in nutritional and anemia status. To enhance future program outcomes, structured monitoring is crucial to ensure food adequacy, food safety, and the effective integration of nutrition education.

Abstract

Introduction: In Indonesia, especially in urban areas, lifestyle and environmental changes contribute to a triple burden of nutritional problems among adolescents, where undernutrition (9.8%) coexists with increasing cases of overweight and obesity (8.6%). This condition reflects a growing imbalance between adolescents’ eating patterns and body perception. Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationship between body image and eating patterns among adolescents with normal, overweight, and obese nutritional status. Methods: A cross-sectional study was applied in this study and data were analyzed using the Chi-square test by comparing observed and expected frequencies. The data collected included the  nutritional status as the dependent variable, body image, socioeconomic factors, and eating patterns as independent variables. The study was conducted in two selected public high schools in Padang City, involving 1,299 population students aged 15–18 years, with a total sample of 377 respondents were selected. Data collection was conducted from August 2024 to March 2025. Results: Results showed that 33.7% of students experienced either undernutrition or overnutrition, 64.5% had poor eating behaviors, and 42.2% reported a negative body image. There were significant associations between eating patterns (p-value=0.049; POR=1.63) and body image (p-value=0.001; POR=29.2) with nutritional status among high school students in Padang City. Conclusion: Understanding the relationship between eating patterns, body image, and nutritional status is essential for developing effective school-based interventions and health promotion strategies.

Abstract

Background: Young people, especially at boarding schools, generate a large amount of food waste that may be addressed through targeted and persuasive education strategies based on context. Objectives: This study aimed to develop and evaluate nudging posters to reduce food waste behavior among adolescents. Methods: A descriptive design was used to assess the validity and reliability of four posters. Three expert panelists provided feedback to the researchers to determine the validity of the posters' content. To assess poster reliability, 60 adolescents rated the posters using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed in Excel for Aiken's V analysis and in SPSS version 25 for Spearman’s correlation and Cronbach's alpha (CCA). Results: According to the validity test, Posters 2 and 4 had the highest Aiken’s V value (0.889) for color harmony, layout, and content flow. The most valid components were the contextually appropriate and scientifically accurate content. The least valid components were the completeness of content and how well the message was emphasized (Aiken’s V=0.444 to 0.666). Language was generally the weakest component, but its validity improved when using a style that matched adolescent characteristics. Reliability analysis confirmed that the evaluation instruments were valid and reliable. Posters 1, 2, and 4 showed significant item correlations (p-value<0.05) with Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.983, indicating excellent internal consistency. Poster 3 contained one invalid item, though this did not affect overall reliability. Conclusions: The study concluded that the developed posters are valid and reliable as a form of nudging media. They demonstrate potential as effective educational tools to influence teenagers’ behavior and reduce food waste in boarding school settings.

Abstract

Background: Children’s nutrition knowledge is closely associated with dietary consumption patterns and susceptibility to infections, both of which influence nutritional status. Structured educational interventions, such as the Gerakan Edukasi dan Pemberian Pangan Bergizi untuk Siswa (GENIUS) program, represents one strategy to improve nutrition knowledge among school-aged children. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate changes in elementary school students’ nutrition knowledge after participating in the nutrition education component of the GENIUS Program. Methods: The GENIUS Program is a school-based intervention consisting of nutrition education (thematic materials and healthy snack-related materials) and the provision of nutritious snacks (20 sessions) for elementary school children. The program was initiated by the National Food Agency (Badan Pangan Nasional [BAPANAS]) and its implementation, monitoring, and evaluation were coordinated by the Indonesian Association of Higher Education Institutions in Nutrition (Asosiasi Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi Gizi Indonesia [AIPGI]) in collaboration with local universities in the program areas. This quantitative study used a secondary data design based on the implementation of the GENIUS Program conducted from October to November 2023 in three public elementary schools in Binjai City, North Sumatra. The researchers were also involved in data collection. A total of 205 students in grades 4–6 were included in the study. Pre- and Post-test knowledge data were collected using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test (for normally distributed data) or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (for non-normally distributed data), as well as the Kruskal–Wallis test. Results: The findings showed a significant increase in nutrition knowledge scores before and after the intervention (p-value<0.05). In addition, there were significant differences in knowledge improvement among schools (p-value=0.008). Further post-hoc analysis indicated that some schools achieved greater improvements in knowledge scores than others. Conclusions: The GENIUS Program was effective in improving nutrition knowledge among elementary school students, although the magnitude of improvement varied across schools.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a global nutrition issue marked by excess body fat and elevated risk of non-communicable diseases. Tele-nutrition counselling has emerged as an alternative strategy to improve dietary behaviour alongside physical activity. Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the effects of tele-nutrition counselling on diet quality and body fat percentage in obese adults. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control-group design was used with 56 adults selected through purposive sampling, allocated to a control group (exercise) and an intervention group (tele-nutrition counselling + exercise). Both groups received an 8-week physical activity program, while counselling was only given to the intervention group. Diet quality was assessed using a 2×24-hour recall and body fat percentage by BIA OMRON. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon, Paired T-Test, Mann-Whitney, and Independent T-Test. Results: The intervention had an effect on diet quality (p-value=0.038) and body fat percentage (p-value=0.03) in the intervention group. There was no effect on diet quality (p-value=0.556) or percent body fat (p-value=0.448) in the control group. There was a difference in effect on diet quality (p-value=0.038) and no difference in effect on body fat percent (p-value=0.091) in both groups. Conclusions: The intervention affected diet quality and body fat percent in the intervention group but not in the control group. Although the intervention successfully improved diet quality, its impact on body fat percentage was not observed among groups, suggesting that improving eating behaviour needs to be accompanied by other intervention components, such as increased physical activity and a longer program duration.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a crucial stage for stunting prevention. Adequate nutritional intake, healthy lifestyle practices, and digital-based nutrition education are essential to support optimal growth and to break the intergenerational cycle of stunting. Objectives: To develop and test the feasibility and effectiveness of the Eduzire application in improving adolescent nutrition knowledge scores as part of an early prevention strategy for stunting. Methods: This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate (4D model). Sixty high school students in Deli Serdang were involved, consisting of 25 in the trial stage and 35 in the implementation stage. Instruments included needs analysis, nutrition knowledge tests, expert validation, and satisfaction analysis. Results: The analysis at the Define stage showed respondents’ average nutrition knowledge was 57% (low); 92% had never used a nutrition education app, 88% did not know how to calculate nutritional status, and 91.7% wanted an application that could assess dietary intake and provide nutrition education. The design stage developed features such as Z-score calculation, individual nutrient requirements, daily intake records, balanced nutrition, anemia and stunting materials, and online consultation with nutrition experts. The development stage validation by experts showed feasibility scores of 82% and 84%, whereas the Disseminate stage demonstrated a 24% increase in nutrition knowledge and 90% user satisfaction. Conclusions: The Eduzire application serves as a nutrition education medium with the potential to enhance adolescents’ nutrition knowledge as an effort to prevent stunting from school age.

Abstract

Background: Stunting constitutes a protracted alimentary dysregulation precipitating irrevocable diminutions in corporeal architecture, cognitive faculty, and prospective productivity. Numerous stratagems subsist to forestall stunting, among which the participatory stewardship of Posyandu cadres and mothers of toddlers is particularly consequential, especially through the augmentation of epistemic comprehension and dispositional orientation via pedagogic instruments, namely E-Booklets. Objectives: This study evaluates the effectiveness of an E-Booklet in optimizing the knowledge and attitudes of cadres and mothers of toddlers within the Kampung Baru Health Center working area. Methods: A quasi-experimental investigation employing a pre-test and post-test schema was undertaken in Medan from May to July 2025. By means of purposive sampling, 60 participants (30 cadres and 30 mothers) were enlisted. Empirical datasets were elicited through standardized questionnaires. The interventional procedure comprised the circulation of an educational E-Booklet via WhatsApp, subsequently accompanied by virtual deliberative sessions spanning a biweekly interval. The compiled data were examined utilizing paired t-tests at a significance criterion of 0.05. Results: The results showed that the use of E-Booklets significantly increased the knowledge of cadres and mothers of toddlers regarding stunting, but did not significantly affect attitudes. The knowledge score also showed a prominent spike (n=30); the results rose from 83.58±9.70 to 89.91±9.77, summarizing the mean slightly at 6.33±6.97 (p-value<0.001). In mothers of toddlers (n=30), there was no such increase in the metric, which went from 74.58 to 79.41, an average rise of 4.8±7.30 (p-value=0.001). Conclusions: The utilization of E-Booklets substantially augments knowledge pertaining to stunting, yet does not exert a statistically significant influence upon the attitudes of cadres or mothers.

Abstract

Background:  The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Indonesia remains high, with 27.7% reported in the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey. This condition is influenced by low levels of knowledge and awareness, inadequate attitudes toward prevention, and limited family support. Dalihan Na Tolu, a Batak cultural philosophy that emphasises the roles of hula-hula (providing guidance and advice), dongan tubu (ensuring vigilance and mutual supervision), and boru (offering practical and tangible support), has been incorporated into the AToluCare application as a culturally grounded educational and supportive innovation. Objectives: : To analyze the effect of the AToluCare application with a Batak cultural approach in improving knowledge, attitudes, and Dalihan Na Tolu support for anemia prevention among pregnant women. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design was conducted in Humbang Hasundutan District. Ninety pregnant women were selected through multistage sampling. The intervention involved using the AToluCare application for one month. Valid and reliable questionnaires were used to measure knowledge, attitudes, and Dalihan Na Tolu support. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Most participants were aged 20–35 years (58.89%), had higher education (75.56%), were employed (70.00%), had parity ≤2 (61.11%), and attended antenatal care regularly (64.44%). Significant improvements were observed in mean scores of knowledge (11.28±2.76 to 16.10±2.40; p-value=0.001), attitudes (39.97±6.86 to 43.22±4.19; p-value=0.008), and Dalihan Na Tolu support (34.12±6.23 to 40.47±5.45; p-value=0.001). Conclusions:The AToluCare application, which incorporates a Batak cultural approach, has been shown to effectively improve knowledge, attitudes, and family support related to anemia prevention among pregnant women. Integrating this application into existing healthcare programs may offer a sustainable, culturally grounded strategy for reducing anemia during pregnancy.
