Abstract

Introduction: A bone graft is a bone substitute material that has been widely used in bone grafting. In general, a bone graft can be resorbable and replace normal bone in the healing process within a few months, because in principle the bone graft has the nature of osteoconduction, osteoinduction, and osteogenic. One of the synthetic materials commonly used in the bone graft is hydroxyapatite (HA), which is identical to the crystal structure of hydroxyapatite from the bone. Review: Hydroxyapatite is a synthetic bone graft, which is the most used now due to its osteoconduction, hardness, and acceptability by bone. Hydroxyapatite with a general formula of Ca10(PO4)6OH2 is much similar to an inorganic component of bone matrix. HA is one of the most stable and less-soluble calcium phosphate bioceramics with a Ca/P ratio of 1.67. Synthetic versions of bone apatite have been developed to address the demand for autologous bone graft substitutes. Synthetic HA is stiff and strong, but brittle. Some solutions to this problem are to combine HA with collagen, β-tricalcium phosphate (β- TCP), Calcium phosphate (CaP) Conclusion: Hydroxyapatite is well known for bone regeneration through conduction or by acting as a scaffold for filling of defects from ancient times, but emerging trends of osteoinductive property of HA are much promising for new bone regeneration.

Abstract

Introduction: Poor dental cleaning habits can lead to plaque accumulation. One of the ways to remove plaque is by brushing your teeth. The plaque will appear within one to two days if there are no oral hygiene measures. The lack of motivation on children in maintaining dental hygiene is caused by various factors such as knowledge and behavior in maintaining dental health. Health education for children is usually carried out through preventive and promotive efforts, one of which is Dental Health Education (DHE) as a form of health education. Booklet and flip chart media are usually used in giving health information because they are effective, easier in making, and can be carried everywhere. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of DHE using the booklet and flip chart media to reduce the OHI-S scores before, a week, and a month after counseling is being given. Methods: This study is true experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. Sampling using random sampling method and were statistically analyzed by using Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney test. Results: The results showed a significant difference in the mean score of OHI-S between the booklet and flipchart groups before, after a week, and after a month (p = 0.001) and (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: DHE using flipchart media is more effective in reducing children's OHI-S scores rather than a booklet

Abstract

Introduction: Excessive exposure of the gums, especially more than 3 mm while smiling is known as a gummy smile, caused by multifactorial etiology and managed with various techniques. The prevalence of gummy smiles is 10% of the age of the population between 20 – 30 years and is more common in women than men. This review purpose to discuss the best treatment for the gummy smile in relation to the etiologies of the cases, the indication, and contraindication for each treatment. Review: The etiology of a gummy smile is multifactorial, for example, gingival hyperplasia, changes in the eruption of permanent teeth, excess maxillary growth deficiency, lack of lip support produced by marked depression from the maxilla, and hyperactive and/or asymmetrical movements of the upper lip. A gummy smile can be treated by using several techniques, such as orthodontic surgery, gingivectomy or crown lengthening, botox injection, myotomy of the lip elevator muscles, and surgical lip repositioning. A gummy smile can be a significant esthetic concern for patients. Understanding the etiology can be challenging due to the multiple factors that may be concomitantly involved. Accurate diagnosis and treatment planning are critical for proper management. Conclusion: The therapeutic procedure for the gummy smile condition will depend on the etiology and the sincerity of the case that can remove the excess gingival tissue and remodeling to make an aesthetic approach to smile.

Abstract

Introduction: Currently dental implants are a prosthetic treatment that many patients are interested in replacing missing teeth because they are considered to be more stable in restoring the function of rehabilitation mastication. The success of implant treatment is determined by various factors, one of which is systemic disease. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that is accompanied by hyperglycemia and causes various side effects, and is one of the risk factors that can have an impact on the installation of dental implants. Objective: To evaluate whether dental implants can be installed in patients with DM. Literature review: A literature search was conducted using Pubmed to find research and review articles on the use of implants in patients with DM published until September 2019. Searches were conducted during October 2019. Discussion: Patients with DM are more susceptible to periodontal disease compared to patients without DM. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes are more prone to complications after implant therapy than patients with controlled diabetes. Good glycemic control can increase osseointegration and implant success. Conclusion: Dental implant placement can be done in DM patients with good metabolic control as in patients without DM.

Abstract

Introduction: Polishing after scaling and root planing provides a smoother tooth surface and improves patient convenience. Recently, a novel polishing system using the air-driven high-pressured device is introduced, but the advantage over conventional polishing is still questionable. This article aims to provide a comprehensive literature study regarding dental polishing by comparing the surface roughness after conventional and air polishing systems. To conduct this review, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Studies published before November 29th, 2019 were systematically reviewed under “air-polishing”, “enamel roughness”, “conventional polishing”, “scanning electron microscopy” and “10 years” publication dates files with PubMed and Google Scholar database. Review: Dental polishing assists the removal of dental plaque and stains to achieve healthy periodontal tissue. The air-polishing device cleans the deeper surface with minimal damage on enamel, the efficacy depends on handpiece degree angulation to the enamel surface, time of exposure, and the powder particle size used. The air-driven device takes a shorter working time and is easy to handle compared to conventional polishing. Prophylaxis paste in conventional polishing is abrasive, hence flattening the enamel surface. Conclusion: Both techniques show efficacy in polishing procedures, nevertheless air polishing provides a smoother surface compared to conventional devices.

Abstract

Introduction: Tooth mobility is the most often experienced by people with a periodontal disease where one of the treatments that can be done to stabilize teeth with mobility is by splinting fibers composite. This literature review will explain the use of fiber composite splints in the tooth with mobility due to periodontal disease. Review: Splinting is a treatment for teeth with mobility that vary in options. Removable or permanent splints can be made of composite materials, acrylic, wire, or a combination of composite materials with fiber. The various form of splinting treatments has their advantages and disadvantages. Splinting with fiber composites is carried out using 2 techniques, namely extra coronal and intracoronary depending on the patient's dental condition. The extra coronal splinting technique is usually performed by placing the composite fiber directly without tooth preparation. The intra-coronal splinting technique requires horizontal preparations that are interconnected with a width of 2-3 mm and a depth of 1-2 mm. In anterior teeth, preparation is usually done in the middle to one-third of the incisal area of the tooth, whereas in posterior teeth it is usually done on the occlusal surface. Splinting with fiber composites has been developed in the field of dentistry which aims to improve tooth stability because it has almost the same strength as metal, is non-corrosive, easy to apply, smooth surface that is translucent, and radiolucent, and has good aesthetic properties. Conclusion: The use of fiber composite splinting is the best choice in terms of advantages and aesthetic factors, as well as accelerating tissue healing response.
