Abstract

Introduction: Oral Squamous Cell carcinomas (OSCC) are still common, and one of the causes is the human papillomavirus (HPV). OSCC-associated HPV is often detected at an advanced stage due to the low knowledge of dentists about early detection. A good level of knowledge among dentists will help reduce the incidence of OSCC- associated HPV cases. This study aims to determine the level of knowledge of general dentists in Medan City regarding the role of HPV in OSCC, clinical aspects, prognosis, preventive measures for OSCC- associated HPV, and the availability of HPV vaccines in Indonesia. Method: This research is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach; the number of respondents is 99 general dentists in Medan City. The data was collected using an online questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out descriptively and calculated in terms of frequency and percentage through SPSS. Result: The results showed that among the 99 respondents, the level of knowledge about the role of HPV in OSCC was good (98%). The level of knowledge regarding the clinical aspects of OSCC-associated HPV is good (64.6%). The level of knowledge regarding the prognosis of OSCC-associated HPV is adequate (70.7%). The level of knowledge regarding OSCC- associated HPV preventive action is good (79.8%). The level of knowledge regarding the availability of the HPV vaccine in Indonesia is good (67.7%). Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, the level of knowledge of general dentists in Medan City about Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) related to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is good (66.7%).

Abstract

Introduction: Fibrous dysplasia is a benign developmental disorder that affects the craniofacial bones among the mandibular bones and is characterized by enlargement as a result of bone being replaced by abnormal fibrous tissue growth. Two types, monostotic or polyostotic lesions, cause a progressively expanding bone lamp, producing cosmetic deformities and functional impairments. Frequently occurs in the posterior region of the mandible bone and is usually unilateral. The etiology of Fibrous dysplasia is not clear but is usually associated with genetic factors. The diagnosis of this deformity is based on clinical, radiological, and histopathological examination. Case Report: A 16-year-old male patient came to the Oral and Maxillofacial Department at Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung, complaining of a lump in his left lower jaw. The patient complained of a lump that had enlarged in the last 7 years, which caused facial asymmetry. Extraoral examination showed facial asymmetry of the mandibular bone; intraoral examination found a lump with a hard consistency, an elevated vestibule, and no ulceration. Computed tomography (CT) imaging showed a solid mass in the left mandibular area with endosteal scalloping. We planned to remove the hyperplastic bone of the mandible with surgical reshaping. Conclusion: Treatment of this case was challenging because the normal anatomic shape of the mandible bone was hard to achieve. In adolescents, facial asymmetry could occur after surgery because they are still in the growth stage. In this case, we were able to obtain a good prognosis for the patient by removing hyperplastic bone and reconstructing facial deformities

Abstract

Introduction: Nanohybrid composite resin is a restorative material that is often used because of its aesthetics and adequate mechanical properties. One of the mechanical properties of nanohybrid composite resins is diametral tensile strength, which affects the strength of composite resins when receiving chewing loads when used in the oral cavity. The value of the mechanical strength of the composite resin can be influenced by several factors, namely food, drink, and saliva. Human saliva has different pH levels and always interacts with restorative materials in the oral cavity. Objective: To determine the effect of salivary pH variations on the diametral tensile strength of nanohybrid composite resin. Methods: The materials used in the study were nanohybrid composite resin (Filtek Z250 XT, 3MESPE, USA), artificial saliva pH 4, pH 7, and pH 10. The type of research was a true experimental laboratory with a posttest-only control group design, which measured the diametral tensile strength of the nanohybrid composite resin that had been immersed in three treatment groups, namely the group immersed in saliva with pH 4, pH 7, and pH 10, with a total of 27 samples using the Universal Testing Machine (JTM, Taiwan). The results obtained were analyzed for one- way and post-hoc LSD variance. Results: Samples at acidic pH had the lowest average diametral tensile strength (39.09 MPa) compared to neutral pH (57.54 MPa) and alkaline pH (49.13 MPa). Statistical analysis showed significant differences between groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Nanohybrid composite resin at neutral salivary pH has greater diametral tensile strength than at acidic or basic salivary pH

Abstract

Introduction: Cross-infection is the transfer of microorganisms that can occur from individual to individual or to object. Candida albicans is one of the infectious pathogens that can cause cross-infection in dentistry. One example is the manufacture of working models of gypsum material, which can cause cross-infection from patients to dentists or technicians, so it is necessary to control infection by means of    disinfection    of    type    III    gypsum     material     work models. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of soaking type III Gypsum in a 0.5% Sodium hypochlorite and 2% Povidone Iodine solution against the growth of Candida albicans. Methods: A laboratory experiment with a total of 21 samples, consisting of 7 samples for each group. The sample is made of a type III gypsum plate measuring 2 x 1 x 0.5 cm. The sample consisted of 3 groups: treatment 1, treatment 2, and treatment 3. The study used the diffusion method. Gypsum plate type III was contaminated with Candida albicans and then immersed in a solution of sterile distilled water (C), 0.5% sodium hypochlorite (P1), and 2% povidone-iodine (P2). The soaking results were planted in SDA media, incubated for 2x24 hours, and then counted using a colony counter. The data were analyzed using Kruskal- Wallis and Mann-Whitney post hoc analyses. Results: In the Kruskal- Wallis analysis of significance (p), between each group, there was a significant difference (p<0.05). The Mann-Whitney post hoc analysis test showed a correlation between group K and P1 and P2 (p<0.05). Conclusion: 0.5% Sodium Hypochlorite and 2% Povidone Iodine solutions are effective as disinfectants using the immersion method in Type III Gypsum against the growth of Candida albicans.

Abstract

Introduction: Based on the etiology, the cervical lesion is divided into carious and non-carious lesions. Cervical cavity fillings frequently experience failures, which lead to microleakage. Flowable composite resins and RM-GIC are frequently used as restorative materials for cervical cavities. The application of an air abrasion technique before restoration can increase the bond between the restorative material and the tooth structure. Purpose: To determine the effect of the air abrasion technique on the micro-leakage of non-carious cervical lesions with flowable composite resin and RM-GIC. Method: A total of 28 premolar samples were prepared for the cervical cavity. The samples were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 7). Group I: air abrasion technique (AquacareTM Twin, Velopex International, London, UK) with flowable composite resin restoration (Filtek, 3M USA), Group II: air abrasion technique with RM-GIC restoration (Fuji II LC, Japan), Group III: flowable composite resin restoration without air abrasion technique, Group IV: RM-GIC restoration without air abrasion technique. Microleakage was assessed using the dye penetration method and observed using a stereomicroscope (ZEISS Stemi 305, German) with a magnification of 20x. The research data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test. Results: The flowable composite resin restoration group with the air abrasion technique had the lowest microleakage (p<0,05) than other restoration groups. There was no significant difference between the RM-GIC restoration group with air abrasion technique and the RM-GIC     group      without      air      abrasion      technique (p≥0.05). Conclusion: Applying the air abrasion technique before restoration with flowable composite resin restorative material resulted in the lowest microleakage.

Abstract

Introduction: Relapse is a problem that still often occurs and results in a decrease in the success of orthodontic treatment. Bone remodeling is beneficial in orthodontic treatment especially to prevent relapse of treatment results. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts have a very important role during the bone remodeling process. Mangiferin (Mangifera indica Linn) has good biocompatible properties on bone. Mangiferin as an immunomodulator, inhibits osteoclast formation and bone resorption by inhibiting the RANKL pathway and has anti-resorptive properties. Aim: The purpose of this study was to prove that mangiferin (Mangifera indica Linn) has the potential to help the bone remodeling process to prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment. Methods: Standardized mangiferin was made to produce hydrogel with a concentration of 6.25% and 12.5%. The research samples were 36 male Wistar rats (Rattus novergicus) aged 3-4 months with the positive control (nickel-titanium closed coil installed without mangiferin application), and treatment group (nickel-titanium closed coil installed with mangiferin application with concentrations of 6.25% and 12.5%). Installation of ni-ti closed coil spring on maxillary incisors and molars for 10 days. A constant force of 10 gr/mm2 was generated using a ni-ti closed coil spring to move the maxillary first molars mesially. Spring was attached to the first molar and maxillary right incisor using a stainless wire ligature and then released. After removal, mangiferin hydrogel was applied twice a day for 14 days and decapitated on days 1, 3, 5, 7, and 14. Histological examination with hematoxylin and eosin staining to see osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Results: The increase in reactive osteoblasts was higher than osteoclasts indicating post- orthodontic bone remodeling. Both osteoblast and osteoclast profiles were significantly different (p<0.05). Conclusion: Mangiferin (Mangifera indica Linn) has the ability to induce osteoblasts in bone formation and inhibit osteoclast differentiation to accelerate the bone remodeling process to prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment

Abstract

Introduction: Mental retardation, characterized by an index IQ less than 70, causes limitations in motoric skills such as brushing teeth. The inability to brush their teeth will affect their oral health, which can increase various oral diseases; hence, children with mental retardation need affirmative action. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation of the law regarding dental health services for children with mental retardation at SLB C YPAC Semarang. Methods: The method of the research is a qualitative method with a juridical-sociological approach. The data used in the primary data are from interviews with the pediatric dentist, director of the hospital, SLB teachers, principal, and jurist. Secondary data are from literature studies that support the primary data. Result: The existing regulation only gives an obligation for the government to fulfill. If they are not implementing the regulation, there is no reporting mechanism or regulatory sanctions. In practice, the right to obtain socialization or information about the dental health of children with mental retardation, the right to access facilities and paramedics without discrimination, and the right to get affirmative action such as dental team service, communication, visitation hours, a dental chair, and treatment specifically stated in the regulation of the Minister of Health Number 89 of 2015 on dental and oral health efforts are not based on that regulation. Conclusion: Without any sanctions, the existing regulation has not been able to guarantee compliance with the right to dental health for children with mental retardation. Therefore, it is still not sufficient as a basis for compliance with human rights

Abstract

Introduction: The condition of the periodontal tissues can usually be checked by conducting a periodontal screening or examination of the periodontal tissues. From this examination, the health status of the periodontal tissue will be obtained, which can facilitate findings related to periodontal disease. Diet has been reported to be significantly associated with periodontal health. A diet that is known to have a beneficial effect on treating inflammation in the oral cavity is the Mediterranean diet. Aim: This literature review discusses the conclusive results of periodontal status in patients or individuals with a Mediterranean diet obtained from several studies. Review: The clinical parameters measured on examination of the periodontal tissue to obtain periodontal health status were plaque and calculus scores, bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival recession (GR), and clinical attachment level or clinical attachment loss (CAL). Nutritional factors are known to act as sources of interference and modulation. A diet that lacks micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) can exacerbate the inflammatory response of the periodontal tissues. The Mediterranean diet is known to be low in saturated fat and rich in polyphenols, oleocanthal, lycopene, minerals, fiber, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. This diet can provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that can affect the periodontal tissue. Although not very numerous, there are studies examining periodontal tissue and periodontal disease in individuals with a Mediterranean diet. These studies require the health status of the periodontal tissues. Conclusion: Periodontal health status in individuals with a Mediterranean diet based on several studies shows quite good results, where there is a decrease in scores on bleeding on probing (BOP), pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and low plaque index.
