Abstract

The key determinants in the extension of Islamic values and practices to a particular rural community lies in the specific meticulous strategies in order to result in the expected outcome. This study qualitatively elaborates scrupulous decent strategies in the extension of Islam to the Dayak tribe on Meratus mountain. The strategies proposed are formulated from to field observation where the researcher participated directly in the act of the community and conducted deep interviews with the indigenous people. The data are analyzed using Miles and Hubberman's cyclic data analysis. The validity and credibility of the data are checked through external validity and triangulation of data sources and methods. The effectiveness of extension and communication strategies are discussed through the viewpoint of extension and communication studies. The preaching of Islam to the community relies on religious axioms that are discussed through the viewpoint of religious studies. Meanwhile, an ethnographic approach is used to understand the life of the Meratus Dayak tribe as the target of the extension. The results of this study is expected to reveal opportunities in extending Islamic values into the life of Meratus Dayak tribe as it shows the traditional values of their heritage. Appreciations and harmonious relationship to their culture and tradition determines the success of Islamic religious extension to their community.

Abstract

Education plays a very important role in advancing and developing the life of the nation. The government's commitment to this is manifested through the Single Tuition (UKT) system as one of the management ways to be able to present information that can support all activities in higher education. This research is intended to repeat further about this matter. Based on the above presentation, the author is interested in analyzing the unit cost of students at the university level, especially PTKIN based on moral philosophy perspective. Is the Single Tuition (UKT) fulfilling fairness principle in moral perspective. This study used a type of descriptive research with the population being a study program at of PTKI. The sample was taken with a total sampling technique involving 51 Study Programs. Data was taken with FGD. Rawls basic theory of Justice used in viewing fairness element on tuition cost. The results of the study show that there are difficulties in assessing the degree of need in each study program. The needs of study programs must be different based on the cluster of knowledge and competency requirements in each study program. As a result, it is difficult to determine the true size of UKT in fulfilling a demand on fairness. But with the contract principle, tuition cost has fairness. The implication is that a common perception is needed to meet the principles of clarity and fairness in determined tuition cost.

Abstract

Radicalization in Indonesian higher education has raised significant concerns, with studies highlighting the potential vulnerability of students, particularly in science disciplines. This research examines the factors influencing radicalization among science students in Kalimantan, focusing on their understanding and practice of Islam. Data were collected through surveys and interviews at five universities in Kalimantan, including both public and Islamic institutions, with participants actively engaged in Islamic activities. The study finds that while science students exhibit curiosity about Islam, their limited access to reliable religious literature often leads them to seek information from digital content, requiring strong content-filtering skills. The research also reveals that students are interested in Islamic teachings that promote good character and enhance worship. Their views on religious diversity and tolerance have become more inclusive, though some students still hold rigid interpretations of Islam. The findings suggest that effective Islamic Education courses should align with students’ interests and contemporary issues while fostering a moderate understanding of Islam. The implications for deradicalization include designing curricula that promote critical thinking, tolerance, and national values, alongside mentorship from moderate academics to counteract extremist ideologies. This approach contributes to creating a balanced, inclusive educational environment that resists radicalization.

Abstract

This article examines the reciprocal relationship between the commodification of religion and philanthropic practices at integrated Islamic primary schools within the Integrated Islamic Schools Network (JSIT) in Ponorogo, East Java. Using an ethnographic case study, the research focuses on middle-class Muslim families to understand how religious and philanthropic activities are transformed into commodities. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving middle-class Muslims and educators from the tarbiyah community, affiliated with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). The study reveals that the rise of the Muslim middle class in Ponorogo, reflecting broader national trends, is shaped by political, cultural, and ideological dynamics. A key finding is the transformation of parental philanthropy into a form of “social piety,” where giving is reframed as both religious devotion and social responsibility. Schools and educators actively cultivate this practice by repackaging Islamic values into attractive commodities that align with middle-class aspirations. The study contributes by showing how philanthropy functions not only as an economic resource but also as a cultural and political instrument in shaping Muslim middle-class identity. It advances debates on the commodification of religion and highlights the socio-political role of philanthropy in contemporary Indonesian Islam.

Abstract

This research explores the spiritual expressions of Muslim artists in contemporary paintings. In this era, Muslim artists often pursue art for art's sake, influenced by their background and spirituality. Though these are not always visible, they embed Islamic values into their work. The study uses a qualitative approach, analyzing data through Sayyed Hossein Nasr's spirituality theory and Kuntowijoyo. Findings show that Muslim artists, especially in Yogyakarta, expand their expertise to create appreciated works. About 28.57% focus on religious themes, 28.57% depict the universe, humanity, and religion, and 28.57% focus on the universe and humanity. Artists create with spiritual awareness, guided by their abilities. Those with higher education tend to be more deliberate in their choices. In Yogyakarta, 85.71% is for livelihood, 100% for artistic expression, and 28.57% for socio-political purposes. Driven by various motivations, Muslim artists contribute to society. The government, society, and art figures can collaborate toward a just, prosperous society.

Abstract

This study explores the intersection of Islamic teachings, bioethical principles, and state regulations in addressing women’s reproductive health, focusing on Hadith, MUI fatwas, and Indonesian legal frameworks. The research aims to examine how these three normative authorities—religion, medicine, and law—interact to construct an ethical discourse that safeguards women’s dignity, autonomy, and well-being. The urgency of this study lies in the ongoing tension between traditional religious interpretations and contemporary medical ethics, which increasingly demand a contextualized and humane approach to reproductive health issues such as menstruation, contraception, abortion, and early marriage. Methodologically, this research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach through textual and discourse analysis, utilizing Michel Foucault’s discourse theory as an analytical lens to uncover the dynamics of power and knowledge in regulating women’s bodies. The study systematically examines classical Hadith texts, fatwas issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and national laws related to reproductive health and marriage, integrating them within the framework of modern bioethical principles—beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice. The findings reveal that Islamic bioethics demonstrates a harmonization between moral-religious values and scientific rationality. The study concludes that a holistic bioethical approach, integrating religious, medical, and legal dimensions, is essential for developing a more just, contextually grounded, and ethically coherent framework for women’s reproductive health in Muslim societies, while contributing to global ethical discourse on gender and health.

Abstract

Abstract: This research examines the community responses to religious differences within the Ahmadiyah group in Colo Village, Dawe Subdistrict, Kudus Regency. Using Glock and Stark’s theory of religious response as an analytical framework, this research employs a qualitative approach with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings show that some Ahmadiyah adherents in Colo Village embrace the movement due to limited ideological, doctrinal, and religious understanding, making them more receptive to new teachings. Despite theological differences, social relations between the Muslim majority and the Ahmadiyah minority remain relatively harmonious, characterized by forms of active and passive tolerance. The Ahmadiyah community maintains its existence through participation in local social activities and adaptive integration strategies. This research highlights the complexity of religious diversity and social interaction within a heterogeneous society. Abstract

Abstract: This research explores the role of religion as a social identity marker in Indonesia's multicultural society through fieldwork in South Sumatra, specifically in Palembang and Musi Banyuasin. The current study utilizes a qualitative approach, incorporating in-depth interviews and participatory observation, to investigate the multifaceted nature of religious identity. The analysis reveals a dualistic function of religious identity, serving as a source of spirituality and a catalyst for social cohesion. However, the study also recognizes the potential for religious identity to catalyze exclusivism. Utilizing a combination of philosophical hermeneutics and a sociological perspective, this study highlights the significance of contextual interpretation of religious teachings in fostering inclusive spirituality. The findings indicate that tolerant spiritual expressions contribute to the strengthening of social harmony, as evidenced by increased interfaith engagement and reduced tensions. A model of spirituality-based multiculturalism is proposed as a strategy for improving social integration in Indonesia. Keywords: inclusive spirituality; religious identity; social harmony; multicultural society

Abstract

Khilafah and democracy are two opposing poles according to many researchers. This assessment is actually reductive, because reading the two terms from one side, namely both as systems and forms of government. Democracy, as a system of government, is highly context-dependent, manifesting in various forms such as liberal, direct, or participatory democracy in various societies. Defenders of the caliphate are mistaken in interpreting the word caliphate mentioned in the Qur'an. Meanwhile, the plaintiffs of the caliphate agree with the assumption of the defense group. As a result, the assumption that the caliphate is a system and form of government continues to roll until it covers the original meaning of the caliphate itself. This article will clear the term caliphate from the pile of political tendencies and then reveal its original meaning. For that, the author proposes two problem formulations. First, what is the true meaning of the caliphate ? Second, how to reconcile the caliphate in a political sense with democracy ? In order to dissect the two problem formulations, the author will adopt two analytical knives, namely the thematic interpretation method and Kuntowijoyo's Prophetic Social Science. Thematic interpretation will reveal the basic meaning of the caliphate, while Kuntowijoyo's prophetic social science will synthesize the caliphate and democracy. This research will produce two conclusions. First, the caliphate is not a system and form of state, but rather a divine character that embodies the will to imitate God and personal responsibility for that character. Second, the caliphate manifests itself as an idea and movement based on science, not just doctrine and belief.

Abstract

Islam has a long history in China, yet its intellectual development has often been overshadowed by studies emphasizing politics, ethnicity, and state–religion relations. This article examines the Han Kitab tradition as a distinctive intellectual project through which Muslim scholars in imperial China translated Islamic concepts into the philosophical language of Confucian thought. Rather than treating the Han Kitab as a marginal form of cultural accommodation or religious syncretism, the article argues that it represented a deliberate and systematic effort to articulate Islam within the dominant moral and epistemic framework of Chinese civilization. Focusing on the writings of Wang Daiyu and Liu Zhi, the study analyzes how central Islamic concepts, particularly divine unity (tahḥīd), religious norms (sharīʿa), and moral character (akhlāq), were rearticulated through Confucian categories such as Tian (Heaven), Li (ritual propriety), and Ren (humaneness). Employing a qualitative, literature-based approach, the article draws on leading scholarship on Islam in China to interpret the conceptual strategies developed in major Han Kitab texts. The findings show that translation in the Han Kitab tradition functioned as a form of conceptual mediation rather than theological compromise, by foregrounding ethics, ritual discipline, and moral cultivation, Han Kitab scholars presented Islam as a coherent intellectual and moral tradition capable of participating in the ethical discourse of imperial China. The study contributes to broader discussions of Islamic intellectual history by demonstrating how claims to religious universality have been sustained through translation, interpretation, and engagement with distinct civilizational vocabularies.
