Abstract

This research explores the integration of Javanese cultural and religious values in environmental preservation, focusing on how rituals and traditions in Tajakembang, Cilacap, embody harmony between humans and nature. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study investigates local practices that reflect deep-rooted cultural wisdom and religious teachings promoting environmental care. Findings reveal that Javanese rituals serve as a medium for transmitting environmental ethics, fostering community cohesion, and sustaining natural resources. Javanese cultural and religious values influence environmental preservation by embedding ecological ethics within ritual practices that promote harmony between humans and nature, fostering sustainable behaviors rooted in spiritual and social norms. The study highlights the significance of preserving these traditions amid modernization, offering insights for cultural-based environmental strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the Qur’anic concept of al-falāḥ through an integrative qualitative research design that combines thematic Qur'anic exegesis with a multi-site qualitative field study in four Indonesian Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). While al-falāḥ is widely invoked in Islamic educational discourse, existing studies have often treated it normatively or examined individual verses without developing a comprehensive thematic interpretation connected to lived educational practice. The study first analyses twelve Qur’anic verses containing the root f–l–ḥ using classical exegesis, particularly Tafsīr al-Jalālayn, to identify the principal dimensions of al-falāḥ. It then explores how these Qur’anic meanings are interpreted and enacted within the educational cultures of four pesantren through interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings indicate that al-falāḥ is understood and institutionalized through interconnected dimensions of spiritual integrity, ethical discipline, sustained effort, communal responsibility, and eschatological orientation, although each pesantren embodies these dimensions in distinctive ways. The study suggests that al-falāḥ may be understood as a living and processual Qur’anic concept within the educational contexts examined. Methodologically, it demonstrates how thematic tafsīr can be integrated with qualitative field research to connect classical Qur’anic interpretation with lived religious practice.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of transformative da'wah (Islamic outreach) conducted by the Smart Home Foundation among waste pickers in Makassar. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research explores three main dimensions: the form and process of mentoring, social impact, and the fundamental urgency of transformative da'wah in a marginalized urban context. The findings indicate that transformative da'wah is implemented through three integrated domains. First, religious-social initiatives include charitable programs (e.g., sharing on Fridays), regular Islamic study sessions, and parenting seminars. Second, a holistic educational approach is developed through a Qur'anic literacy program and the establishment of the Dream Islamic School, which covers early childhood education through boarding school. Third, economic empowerment is pursued through social enterprises such as Smart Laundry and private tutoring services. The impact of these initiatives is evident across various dimensions. Beyond these empirical findings, this study advances the scholarship of contemporary da'wah by proposing an integrative model of transformative da'wah that systematically connects religious guidance, holistic education, social empowerment, and economic sustainability within a unified Islamic framework. This model extends the conventional understanding of da'wah from a predominantly normative and ritual activity to a multidimensional paradigm of social transformation, thereby enriching contemporary Islamic thought on da'wah as an instrument of human development and community empowerment. Practically, the findings provide strategic insights for da'wah institutions, NGOs, zakat organizations, and policymakers in designing sustainable, community-based, and empowerment-oriented programs for marginalized populations
