Abstract

This study aims to examine how da'wah communication plays a role in shaping social change through the lifestyle of "hijrah" youth in Bandung City. The hijrah phenomenon, which has grown among urban youth, not only represents a resurgence of religiosity but also signifies a transformation in values, behavior, and social identity influenced by modern da'wah, especially through digital media. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method on several hijrah communities in Bandung, such as Pemuda Hijrah (Shift) and Shab Alqo. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation of digital da'wah activities. The results show that the hijrah movement among the younger generation in Bandung, particularly through communities like Pemuda Hijrah (Shift) and Shab Alqo, has had a significant impact on positive social change. This change is evident in the increased participation of youth in religious activities, a shift toward a more Islamic lifestyle, and the effective and interactive use of social media as a means of da'wah. Young people involved in hijrah communities tend to avoid promiscuity, be more selective in their entertainment consumption, and actively engage in religious studies, social activities, and the production of digital da'wah content. Moreover, these communities serve as platforms for religious identity expression, strengthen social networks based on Islamic values, and contribute to building a collective awareness to live more meaningful and spiritually and socially responsible lives.

Abstract

In various academic literature studies in Indonesia, identity politics is often equated with the politicization of identity. As a result,  identity politics is less noticed as the politics of recognition or multiculturalism politics for oppressed identity groups. This article aims to show the distinction between identity politics and politicization of identity in the history of democracy in Indonesia, while also showing how identity politics, as the politics of recognition and religious moral values, can support democratization. This study is a philosophical research and therefore uses a philosophical research methodology, with five main methodological elements: Interpretation, internal coherence, holistic, historical continuity, and heuristics. First, this study finds that Identity politics and politicization of identity are two terms in contemporary social philosophy with different meanings. Identity politics is not bad per se, while politicization of identity is harmful per se; second, the answer to the problem of democracy is not to confine religion to the private sphere as in secularism in the West or the depoliticization of Islam in the New Order era in Indonesia, but rather to carry out a double learning process between state and religion, politics and faith, reason and revelation, which is called post-secularism; Third, religious hegemony remains a threat to democracy in Indonesia, but because democracy is not only a system but also an ethos, the moral contribution of religion is greatly needed in forming a healthy democracy. In conclusion, identity politics can support democracy when religion engages in dialogue with public reason and becomes the moral foundation of the democratic ethos. Therefore, this study suggests that religion and state must always engage in a dual learning process and recognize each other's contributions.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the emergence of leftist Islamic thought as articulated by the FNKSDA (Nahdliyyin Front for Natural Resource Sovereignty). The primary focus is to examine the material and historical conditions that enabled the development of this thought. This research employs a qualitative document analysis as its method. In doing so, the researcher drew data from official FNKSDA documents, articles authored by FNKSDA activists, and relevant academic journals accessible to the researcher. I interpreted the collected data using a thematic approach guided by the Historic Materialism framework formulated by Michael Lowy.  Based on the analysis results, the study finds that the material and historical conditions confronted by FNKSDA have significantly shaped its formulation of leftist Islamic thought. The formation of FNKSDA's thought is shaped by three particular conditions: the political-economic landscape of post-Reformasi Indonesia, the internal dynamics of the Nahdlatul Ulama organization, and the broader development of Islamic thought in Indonesia in the post-Reformasi era. The researcher contends that this study offers a valuable contribution to the broader scholarship on Islamic political thought in Indonesia.

Abstract

The rise of religious-based identity politics in Indonesia has significantly influenced local governance, particularly among regional heads who integrate Islamic values into public administration. Conversely, the principle of pluralism—as a cornerstone of democracy—demands inclusivity and equal treatment for all societal groups. This study aims to examine and compare two leadership models of regional heads in Indonesia: one oriented toward Islamic theocracy and the other toward democratic pluralism, with a focus on their respective implications for the development of modern civil society. Employing a qualitative comparative case study approach, the research analyzes two regions with distinct leadership orientations. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and participant observation. The findings reveal that theocratic leadership emphasizes religious values and moral accountability, often enhancing religious identity but risking exclusion and limited civic space. In contrast, pluralist leadership promotes diversity and participatory governance, yet faces challenges in building a cohesive collective identity. The study concludes that effective local governance in a diverse society requires a balanced integration of moral-religious values and inclusive democratic principles to ensure fairness, legitimacy, and sustainability in civil society development.

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth the dynamics of social relations between the Shia Alawiyin and Sunni Alawiyin groups in Palembang City. Despite differences in their schools of thought, these two groups are able to coexist without causing open conflict, a condition rarely studied in the literature on intra-community Muslim relations. The knowledge gap lies in the lack of understanding of how kinship ties function as a determining factor in reducing the potential for sectarian conflict. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving 12 purposively selected participants. Data collection techniques were carried out through participant observation and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using the ethnographic framework of Spradley and McCurdy. The results show that social relations between Shia and Sunni Alawiyin form associative and dissociative patterns. The associative pattern is reflected in the form of cooperation in the fields of trade, da'wah, and involvement in socio-religious activities. The dissociative pattern is characterized by limited failure that does not develop into open conflict. The most important factor in mitigating potential conflict is the strength of kinship ties (jama'ah) among the Alawiyin. Theoretically, these findings contribute to the study of social integration in pluralistic societies, while practically, they emphasize the importance of strengthening family and cultural solidarity in maintaining social harmony.

Abstract

The emergence of Islamic AI applications represents a pivotal transformation in the mediation of daʿwah. Yet, it raises pressing concerns about bias, epistemic validity, and the absence of recognized religious authority. This study examines ChatMu GPT and MuslimAI.ai, two prominent platforms with distinct theological orientations, to evaluate how they address religious questions framed within Indonesia's four indicators of religious moderation across the domains of message of da'wah, such asʿaqīdah (creed), ʿibādah (worship), and muʿāmalah (social ethics). Using qualitative content analysis and drawing on Algorithmic Bias Theory, six prompts were designed to test inclusivity, doctrinal balance, and ethical framing. Findings reveal that ChatMu GPT consistently grounds responses in Muhammadiyah doctrinal sources, producing structured but institutionally aligned guidance, while MuslimAI.ai prioritizes emotional inclusivity and accessibility at the expense of jurisprudential depth. Both exhibit limited transparency of sources and potential algorithmic bias. These results suggest that while Islamic AI can enhance accessibility to religious knowledge, its unsupervised use risks narrowing interpretive diversity. The study recommends hybrid AI models supervised by qualified ʿulamāʾ, trained on pluralistic datasets, and aligned with Islamic ethical principles of ṣidq (truthfulness), amānah (trustworthiness), and maṣlaḥah (public good) to preserve the integrity of digital daʿwah.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the phenomenon of domestic quarrels, both in real life and in cyberspace, which often stem from the failure of households to implement the principle of mu’asyarah bil ma’ruf in marital life. Such neglect frequently results in disputes between spouses. The purpose of this research is to explain the implementation of mu’asyarah bil ma’ruf in domestic life according to Wahbah Zuhaili and to analyze its impact on family harmony. Specifically, this paper addresses two main questions: how the concept of mu’asyarah bil ma’ruf is formulated in Wahbah Zuhaili’s Tafsir al-Munir and how its application influences the quality of marital relationships. This research employs a library research design with documentation as the primary method of data collection. The main source is Wahbah Zuhaili’s Tafsir al-Munir, analyzed using a qualitative approach by interpreting textual data and relating it to relevant references for deeper understanding. The findings reveal that mu’asyarah bil ma’ruf is a fundamental obligation of the husband toward his wife, serving as the cornerstone for establishing a family based on sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah. Without proper fulfillment of rights and obligations, it is impossible for couples to achieve a harmonious and loving household. This research contributes to the field of da’wah and family studies by emphasizing the importance of cultivating a peaceful, compassionate, and morally grounded family environment as the essential foundation for individual and social development.

Abstract

This study argues that the former thugs make an effort to rehabilitate their spoiled identity into a new identity collectively by presenting themselves on the front stage with a religious background. The former thugs change their appearance, spiritual behavior, ideological views, and economic management to create a new impression. This study employs a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological perspective. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis techniques consist of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. This study asks what the former thugs behave in the front stage? How do they navigate their identity to remove the stigma? This study finds that to navigate their identity, former thugs join the Islamic group, they change their nickname to a good nickname that shows their Islamic identity, they use their wealth to support religious activities and use it for something that is in accordance with Islamic teachings. They make these changes with their friends in the Islamic group collectively. This study incorporates Erving Goffman's theory, which posits that people in the West who have spoiled identities navigate their identities individually. In contrast, former thugs in Solo navigate their collective identity.
