Abstract

Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia (SEA Teacher) is a project providing opportunity for pre-service teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia. This study presents the experiences of four pre-service English teachers who enrolled in SEA Teacher internship program. The participants were interviewed and the data were analyzed via thematic narrative analysis. Research credibility was enhanced through multiple data sources including interview transcript, lesson plans, and student teachers’ report. The Findings revealed that soft or weak form of task-based language teaching (TBLT) was implemented, varying from those similar to traditional presentation-practice-production (PPP) paradigm, to stronger forms, such as task-supported language teaching. Strong forms of TBLT remained unproven due to students’ linguistic challenge.

Abstract

The use of podcast as a medium of instruction in English classrooms has gained immense interests of L2 researchers and practioners. However, few of the existing studies highligt the use of Podcast to teach Islamic expressions within the context of Indoesian Islamic higher education. To fill this gap, this study aimed at designing Podcast that serves purposes for the teaching of Islamic expressions in English, and documenting the students’ perceptions toward the instructional design. This case study garnered the data from 45 students majoring in the English Department at the State Islamic Institute of (IAIN) Metro, Indonesia. The empirical evidence show that designing the Podcast for the teaching of Islamic expressions in English requires four interplay and systematic steps, namely planning, designing, evaluating, and uploading. The students perceived that their acceptance to the Podcast based learning design was driven by two key factors, namely the moral values embedded in the podcasts addressing Islamic content, and the content delivery fitting the condition of the target audience. This study encapsulates that English teachers pay attention on the content and pedagogical methods when designing a Podcast for the teaching of Islamic expressions in English.

Abstract

Developments in the area of task-based language teaching (TBLT) research have focused on the task implementation factors in that they effectively promote successful language performances. The present study aimed to examine the effect of task repetition on the speaking performances of students who studied English Specific Purposes at an Indonesian Maritime Vocational School. To this end, a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design was applied that involved 43 participants, who were non-randomly selected and considered as two groups of the experimental and control ones. Both groups took a pre-test to ensure their homogeneity in speaking skill. For 12 sessions, the experimental group was engaged in repetitive practice of speaking tasks. Three weeks after the end of the treatment, both groups performed the two post-tests. The results of independent samples t-tests showed that the experimental group significantly outperformed their counterparts in the control group in terms of task complexity on the two post-test phases (p<.05). However, they did not differ significantly in terms of accuracy.
