Abstract

Early childhood care plays a crucial role in shaping a child's character, health, and future development. In Lambung Bukit Padang City, there are still young mothers who lack knowledge and skills in appropriate parenting, including stimulation of growth and development, nutritional support, and positive behavioral development. This situation can lead to developmental problems in children if left unaddressed. Therefore, this empowerment program is a strategic step to enhance young mothers' capacity through education, training, and mentoring. The goal of this empowerment activity is to increase young mothers' knowledge about healthy, positive, and developmentally stimulating early childhood care patterns. It also trains young mothers' skills in providing balanced nutrition and in stimulating children's motor, cognitive, language, and socio-emotional development. It encourages the creation of a conducive family environment for optimal child growth and development. This activity has four stages: problem analysis, preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The educational component of this program uses presentations, interactive discussions, and the distribution of pocketbooks and leaflets. The results of the T-test indicate a significant difference in mothers' knowledge levels before and after education (p=0.029). The use of various media has been shown to improve mothers' understanding because the material is presented visually and contextually, making it easier to apply in everyday life. Furthermore, mothers should continue to improve their knowledge by establishing peer groups as a learning platform and providing mutual support in early childhood care.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem affecting children’s physical growth and cognitive development. In Pauh District, Padang City, the prevalence of stunting reached 9.75% (213 of 2,184 children under five). This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a cross-generational family empowerment model in improving stunting prevention practices. A quasi-experimental design with a pre–post and post-test approach without a control group was employed using a Community-Based Participatory Approach (CBPA), emphasizing active community involvement in all stages of the intervention. The sample consisted of 21 purposively selected participants, including pregnant women, mothers of children under five, and elderly caregivers. The intervention included health education sessions, group discussions, nutrition and exclusive breastfeeding education, positive parenting practices, and home visits. Data were collected using pre- and post-test questionnaires, observation of caregiving practices, and child development monitoring using the Child Development Card. The results showed an increase in mean knowledge scores of 31.43 among elderly caregivers and 68.57 among mothers. Improvements were also observed in dietary practices, hygiene behaviors, and responsive caregiving, with most children achieving age-appropriate development. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of cross-generational family empowerment into a comprehensive community-based intervention model. Scientifically, these findings highlight the importance of involving multi-generational caregivers in stunting prevention and provide policy implications for developing sustainable family-based promotive and preventive programs.

Abstract

Sungai Pisang, located in Teluk Kabung Selatan Subdistrict, Padang City, Indonesia, is a coastal area with considerable ecotourism potential but faces persistent challenges in household solid waste management. The community generates approximately 2.6 tons of plastic waste each month; however, the absence of temporary waste storage facilities and regular collection services has led to open burning and indiscriminate waste disposal, threatening public health and coastal ecosystems. This community engagement program aimed to strengthen local capacity for sustainable waste management through participatory and educational approaches. The program was implemented from January to December 2025 using a community-based participatory approach involving 30 participants representing women’s groups, youth organizations, the local Waste Management Institution, elementary school teachers, and community leaders. Activities included stakeholder coordination meetings, focus group discussions (FGDs), and community education on household waste segregation. The program improved participants' knowledge and practical skills in waste segregation. FGDs identified two feasible community-based waste management strategies: household composting of organic waste and periodic collection of recyclable inorganic waste. In addition, the Environmental Agency recommended establishing a Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) Waste Processing Facility (TPS3R) as a long-term solution to overcome geographical constraints affecting waste transportation to the Air Dingin landfill. Overall, the program enhanced community awareness, strengthened stakeholder collaboration, and established a foundation for sustainable community-based solid waste management in support of coastal environmental sustainability.

Abstract

The increasing frequency of disasters and environmental degradation in West Sumatra in 2024 has reshaped public perceptions of natural disasters. This study examines the role of disaster narratives in enhancing community knowledge, fostering disaster education values, and facilitating the transmission of these values. A service-learning approach was implemented through a community outreach program at Gandoriah Beach, Pariaman City, West Sumatra. Between May and June 2024, data were collected from 131 respondents representing diverse backgrounds. Participants were surveyed on disaster narrative knowledge, educational values, and value transmission while receiving narrative-based disaster mitigation education. Program outcomes were evaluated using structured and open-ended questionnaires, and the data were analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings indicate that community knowledge of disaster narratives was generally high but unevenly distributed. Disaster education values were evident, with environmental and religious values emerging as the most dominant, whereas social responsibility, empathy, and moral values remained less developed. Disaster narratives also promoted emotional engagement and demonstrated strong potential for broader educational application. Moreover, their function has shifted from simply recounting past experiences to fostering causal understanding, environmental awareness, and preventive action, although community preparedness is still developing. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening narrative-based disaster education grounded in local knowledge and community experience to integrate knowledge, values, and action, thereby improving disaster preparedness, particularly among communities living in ecologically vulnerable coastal areas.

Abstract

The Social Entrepreneurship Assistance Program, implemented through a collaborative partnership between the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Technology Business Incubator of Universitas Andalas, was designed to strengthen the economic independence of vulnerable households through entrepreneurship development. The program involved 350 Beneficiary Families (Keluarga Penerima Manfaat, KPM) across Padang City (150 participants), Pariaman City (100 participants), and Tanah Datar Regency (100 participants), West Sumatra, Indonesia. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), vulnerable communities experience disproportionately high rates of micro-enterprise failure due to inadequate business planning and limited managerial capacity. This community development initiative adopted a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach integrated with a structured business incubation model. The intervention consisted of regional coordination, participant screening, a Training of Trainers (TOT) program for 20 local mentors, and three months of intensive field mentoring. Capacity-building activities emphasized business model development using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) and SWOT analysis, financial literacy and bookkeeping, and productive asset enhancement through financial assistance of IDR 600,000 for each beneficiary family. In addition, a Virtual Expo platform was established to improve product promotion and expand market access. The program achieved a 100% completion rate in business model development, while 85% of participants consistently adopted daily cash bookkeeping practices. These findings indicate that strategic collaboration between university-based technology business incubators and government institutions can effectively enhance entrepreneurial capacity, reduce micro-enterprise risks, and promote sustainable socio-economic empowerment by transforming vulnerable households into resilient and independent entrepreneurs.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the fashion and tailoring industry often encounter managerial and operational challenges that hinder business sustainability and competitiveness. Rumah Jahit Padang, a home-based tailoring enterprise, faced several critical issues, including production bottlenecks, inconsistent service quality, inadequate financial management, and limited digital marketing practices. This community service program aimed to strengthen business governance through the implementation of an integrated management approach. A three-month intervention was conducted using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, involving the business owner and three production staff. The intervention consisted of four key components: Business Model Canvas (BMC) development, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) formulation, financial management improvement, and digital marketing enhancement. Activities included diagnostic assessment, business process mapping, participatory workshops, hands-on mentoring, and post-intervention evaluation. The implementation of the program resulted in substantial improvements in operational and managerial performance. Production errors decreased by 32%, order fulfillment efficiency increased from 65% to 95%, and operational delays were eliminated through standardized workflows. Financial governance improved through the separation of personal and business finances and the adoption of structured bookkeeping practices. Furthermore, digital marketing initiatives expanded customer reach and enhanced the enterprise's online visibility. Overall, the integrated governance intervention successfully strengthened organizational capacity, improved service quality and operational efficiency, reduced business risks, and established a sustainable foundation for long-term MSME growth. The findings demonstrate that a holistic governance model combining strategic planning, operational standardization, financial management, and digital transformation can effectively enhance the competitiveness and resilience of small-scale tailoring enterprises.

Abstract

Digital transformation has become a strategic priority for improving public service delivery, transparency, and community participation in local governance. However, many rural administrative units (nagari) in Indonesia continue to face limitations in digital infrastructure and information management, reducing the accessibility and quality of public services. This community engagement program aimed to develop a local wisdom-based digital information system for Nagari Durian Tinggi to improve public information services, strengthen administrative capacity, and promote participatory governance. The program employed a participatory community engagement approach involving needs assessment, stakeholder consultation, website development using the OpenSID platform, database preparation, capacity-building workshops for nagari officials, and technical assistance for website management and maintenance. Program implementation emphasized the integration of local wisdom into digital content while enhancing the technological competence of local administrators. The program resulted in the establishment of an operational nagari website featuring a comprehensive village profile, public service information, governance data, and community development content. Capacity-building activities improved the digital literacy and technical skills of nagari officials, enabling more effective website management and public information dissemination. The digital platform also increased community access to government information, encouraged public participation in local development, and supported more transparent and efficient public services. Overall, the program demonstrates that a local wisdom-based village information system can strengthen digital governance, improve public service quality, and contribute to sustainable community development in rural areas.
