Abstract

Maternal mortality and stunting remain major public health challenges in Indonesia, largely due to limited early detection of pregnancy complications and low maternal health literacy during the First 1000 Days of Life. Strengthening maternal knowledge through structured education is essential to improve pregnancy outcomes. This community service program aimed to enhance pregnant women’s knowledge of pregnancy danger signs, completion of six antenatal care (ANC) visits, anemia prevention, balanced nutrition, and early stunting prevention. A community-based participatory approach using a service-learning model was implemented among 39 pregnant women at Pauh Primary Health Center, Padang. Educational activities were conducted through interactive lectures, group discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. Knowledge was assessed using pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed with a paired t-test. The results showed a significant increase in mean knowledge scores from 77.98 ± 16.26 to 86.60 ± 11.18 (p = 0.0002). The proportion of participants with “good” knowledge increased from 66.6% to 76.6%, while those with “poor” knowledge decreased substantially. These findings indicate that interactive and structured maternal health education effectively improves understanding of pregnancy complications and stunting prevention. Continuous implementation through routine maternal classes and stronger family involvement is recommended to sustain behavioral changes and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

Abstract

Nutrition problems among primary school children remain an important public health concern, as they affect growth, learning concentration, and academic performance. Limited understanding of balanced nutrition and inadequate implementation of healthy school food services continue to be challenges in many educational institutions. This community engagement program aimed to improve students’ and teachers’ knowledge of balanced nutrition and to strengthen school food service implementation. Educational sessions were delivered to 59 fifth-grade students through interactive lectures and leaflets covering principles of balanced nutrition, the “Isi Piringku” concept, and food waste reduction. A module was also provided for teachers and the managing foundation to support the implementation and sustainability of the school food service program. Knowledge change was evaluated using pretest–posttest questionnaires. In addition, a qualitative assessment of the school food service implementation was conducted through discussions with teachers and school administrators to identify strengths and areas for improvement. The results indicated a 30% average increase in students’ knowledge about balanced nutrition, accompanied by improvements in their attitudes toward healthy eating practices. The program also enhanced teachers’ awareness of the importance of menu diversity and adherence to nutrition standards for school-aged children. The school principal also expressed commitment to communicating and following up on the recommendations with the foundation. This program contributed to strengthening nutrition literacy and improving the school food service system. The provision of a school food service module and educational materials is expected to support the sustainability of healthy school initiatives at SD Islam Budi Mulia Padang.

Abstract

This community service initiative was carried out to address the persistent issue of underweight or Bawah Garis Merah (BGM) among children under five through a family-centered empowerment approach in Kampung Jua Nan XX Village. The program aimed to strengthen parental capacity in recognizing, preventing, and managing early signs of growth faltering. A participatory method was employed, integrating health education sessions with home visits for families of BGM toddlers. The intervention involved 30 parents and focused on interactive counseling, distribution of educational materials, and growth monitoring. Pre- and post-tests were used to measure improvements in parental knowledge, while anthropometric assessments were conducted for four toddlers identified as BGM and receiving supplementary feeding. The results demonstrated a notable increase in parental understanding of nutrition and growth monitoring, with total correct responses rising from 35 to 58 after the intervention. Among the four toddlers monitored, two showed meaningful improvements in nutritional status following 57 days of supplementary feeding and family support, while the remaining two exhibited minimal changes influenced by irregular health service utilization and limited household resources. These findings highlight that preventing BGM requires a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond food-based interventions and actively involves both parents, particularly in strengthening caregiving practices and increasing health service engagement. The study concludes that family empowerment combined with regular monitoring and contextualized support can serve as an effective model for addressing early childhood undernutrition in community settings.

Abstract

Integrated Service Posts (Posyandu) are community-based primary healthcare services covering all life cycles, including toddlers and women of childbearing age. However, utilization remains suboptimal. In Padang City, toddler visit coverage reached 75.6% in 2023, below the 85% target, mainly due to limited community knowledge and awareness of Posyandu’s role. This study applied a descriptive-analytic approach through participatory educational activities integrated with the Family Oriented Midwifery Education (FOME) program in Parak Laweh Village, Padang City. Interventions included counseling, basic health examinations, growth and development monitoring using the Pre-Screening Development Questionnaire (KPSP), and education on family planning. The target group consisted of mothers with toddlers and couples of childbearing ages. Data were analyzed using univariate methods. Among 143 households, 65.22% of toddlers did not undergo routine monthly growth monitoring, 53.57% of couples of childbearing ages were not family planning participants, and 95.10% had not received prior education on child growth monitoring. Despite this, most toddlers had normal height-for-age and weight-for-age indicators. KPSP results showed that 72.72% of toddlers were developmentally appropriate, while 27.27% were categorized as questionable. Educational interventions improved community awareness and participation in Posyandu activities. However, continued efforts are required to strengthen knowledge, promote routine monitoring, and enhance the utilization of Posyandu services as a key strategy for improving maternal and child health outcomes.

Abstract

Sexual violence among adolescents constitutes a growing public health and human rights concern globally, including within educational settings in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured educational intervention in improving students’ knowledge and awareness of sexual violence at SMA Xaverius Bukittinggi. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–post-test design was conducted in September 2025. Participants completed a baseline assessment, followed by an intervention consisting of lectures, case-based learning, and facilitated discussions, and subsequently a post-intervention evaluation. Outcome measures focused on knowledge of sexual violence typologies, reporting mechanisms, and early detection indicators. Baseline results revealed substantial knowledge gaps across all assessed domains. Post-intervention findings demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ understanding, particularly in recognizing forms of sexual violence, identifying appropriate reporting pathways, and detecting early warning signs. The increase in pretest and post-test scores indicates the effectiveness of the intervention in enhancing both awareness and conceptual comprehension. These findings support the implementation of targeted, school-based educational programs as a practical strategy for sexual violence prevention. Regular and sustained interventions are recommended to reinforce knowledge retention, promote early identification, and foster safer educational environments. Institutionalizing annual programs at SMA Xaverius Bukittinggi may contribute to long-term prevention and student empowerment.

Abstract

Hydrometeorological disasters in the form of floods and flash floods that struck West Sumatra Province from late November to December 2025 caused multidimensional impacts on affected communities, particularly in social conditions, environmental health, education, and psychosocial well-being among vulnerable groups. This study aims to analyze the implementation of an inclusive disaster emergency response community service program and its contribution to strengthening social resilience and environmental health in affected areas. This study employed a rapid response community service approach using rapid assessments, coordination with local governments, and short preparatory training for the implementation team. Program interventions included community-based psychosocial assistance, distribution of 400 hygiene kits, provision of 400 school kits, and brief education on clean and healthy living behaviours (PHBS). The program was implemented by Universitas Andalas in collaboration with Universitas Ekasakti and the community partner Tabik DC in Padang City and Pesisir Selatan Regency. The primary beneficiaries included children, older adults, flood-affected families, and other vulnerable groups, including students with special needs. The results indicate that the program increased children’s participation in psychosocial activities, improved social interaction at the community level, and ensured the distribution of basic hygiene and educational needs to targeted beneficiaries. In addition, local stakeholders demonstrated improved coordination capacity in implementing inclusive emergency response activities. In conclusion, the implementation of an inclusive and collaborative community service model plays a significant role in supporting early post-disaster recovery, particularly in strengthening social resilience and maintaining environmental health among vulnerable populations.
