Abstract

This research is a study of improving students’ ability in reading comprehension. The aim was to find out whether the use of Herringbone technique would bring a significant difference in teaching reading comprehension through Recount text, compared with the result before the students being treated. The study was conducted in the tenth grade students of SMA N 4 Pematangsiantar. The research method used was the experimental design, where the Experimental group was the PMIA 3 class, and the PMIA 2 class as the control class. Both of the classes had 34 students in each of it. The data were obtained through pre-test, treatment and post test. The pre-test was held to know the students’ basic ability or score before treatment was given. Meanwhile, the post test was held to know the students’ achievement and significant effect after the students were taught using Herringbone technique. Finding of the research showed that both groups had a significant improvement in their reading ability after being treated and passed the KKM. The Control group, which the pre-test score was 60, made an improvement shown in their post-test score in amount of 70,44. The experimental group, the group which the researcher treated the Herringbone technique to them, had a higher improvement than the control group. The average score of pre-test in this group was about 54,41 where then being improved up to 78,97. The score of t-test (3,981) was higher than t-table (1,668) at the level of significance 5% for two tailed test, so Null Hypothesis is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis is accepted.

Abstract

The study was conducted to analyze the quality of the 2019 English Matriculation objective test for which the quality was not known. This research is quantitative descriptive. This test was followed by 768 students. The research determined by a simple random sampling technique. The percentage of leeway for accuracy is 10% so that the number of samples specified is 90 respondents. The data collection technique in this research is documentation. The analysis technique in this study was carried out by testing the validity, reliability, level of difficulty, distinguishing power, and deceitful effectiveness so that it can be used to describe the quality of the English Matriculation test. The research results obtained in this matter were good, there were only 1 item (2%), 22 items needed to be repaired (44%), and 27 items (54%) were eliminated / removed. The preparation of the English Matriculation test was conducted through a focus group discussion. Evaluation of English matriculation questions should be carried out periodically in order to provide an overview of the quality of the questions. The items that have failed should not be used anymore, and the revised questions should be corrected by looking at the indicators of the cause of the failure. Increasing competency in writing questions can be done by participating in item analysis training or through tutorials on electronic media.Keywords: objective test; test analysis; test quality

Abstract

This study was focused on determine the types of use slang language style. The types of slangs were analyzed from “Charlie’s Angels” movie. Theories used in this research were Sumarsono (2007) about the types of slang language style and Zhou & Fan (2013) about the functions of slang language. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method.This research is the kind of content analysis study based on the way to do qualitative research. The way to collects the data are; downloading movie, watching movie and downloading movie subtitle. The data were from a movie entitled “Charlie’s Angels” in the year of 2019 with action-comedy genre.After conducting the analysis, this study showed that there were four types of slang language style from six types of slang language. They were clipping, creative, uses the existing words and metaphor. Creative was found as the most dominant types of slang language style in the movie with 10 data (40%), metaphor with 7 data (28%), uses the existing words with 5 data (20%) and clipping with 3 data (12%). Finally, the reseacher hopes that this study will be useful for the future improvement of studying literature, especially about slang language style

Abstract

The aim of this research was to improve the students’ vocabulary using wall charts as learning media. This is a classroom action research with two cycles. The procedures of each cycle were planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects of this research were 31 students of Learning Group VII of SMP Negeri 2 Belitang Hilir. The data are obtained quantitatively and qualitatively, namely classroom observation, interview, test scores, and questionnaires. This research showed that the students could improve to memorize the vocabulary and its meaning with the help of wall charts. The teacher also could help them correct the spelling and pronunciation. Moreover, the students’ attitude towards the teaching-learning process improved since wall charts increased the students’ interest in learning English vocabulary. It can be seen that in cycle 1 was 67 meanwhile in cycle 2 was 81.9. The research result also showed that wall chart was a good medium for learning English vocabulary with mean value 4.52.

Abstract

Abstract: Motivation is a paramount aspect in the learning process. It is a drive that encourages students to achieve better learning results. In the process of accomplishing the learning task, students might encounter difficulties that can demotivate them. Therefore, motivation-regulation is needed to maintain students’ motivation in completing the task. Many studies have been done to investigate master students’ academic reading. Yet, little research has explored master students' motivation-regulation in academic reading. This paper sought to investigate the role of motivation-regulation in master students’ academic reading. It employed mixed-method research where the researchers distributed questionnaires and conducted an interview to collect the data. The research took place at the English Education Master’s Program of Sanata Dharma University from February to April in 2020. There were 14 master students involved in this study. The findings showed that there were three roles of motivation-regulation in master students’ academic reading: (1) Students had high self-efficacy in academic reading which enable them to accomplish the academic reading task; (2) they had an intrinsic interest in academic reading which empowered them to maintain their motivation in the process of academic reading; (3) they had positive emotions towards academic reading. The researchers concluded that the students in this study are capable of regulating their motivation in an academic reading task. Abstract

The needs analysis cannot be separated from the development of materials and curriculum design for language learning, especially ESP. The research about ESP, especially the topic of need analysis still needs to be explored. Thus, this research aims to identify language skills needed and develop English teaching materials at Politeknik Gihon. The subjects of this study were 45 ongoing students and six former students. The result of the study revealed the perceptions of the students’ needs for their current studies and future career and how the English material should be designed in this institution. This study contributes in developing the teaching material and proposed a redesigned of ESP course.

Abstract

This study aimed to recognize the problems  faced by the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Jejawi and to determine the  factors that influenced  students’ difficulties in comprehending recount text. This study was a qualitative research. The subject of the study was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Jejawi in academic year of 2019/2020. The techniques of collecting the data were interview and reading comprehension test. To analyses the data, reducing, data displayed, content analysis, and draw conclusion were applied. The result of the study showed that there were 68.7%  students  had difficulties in finding the main idea,  70.15% students had difficulties in understanding vocabulary,  66% students had difficulties in finding reference,  59.3% students had difficulties in finding purpose of the text,  67.24% students had difficulties in finding detail information, and 81.95% students had difficulties in determining the generic structure of the text. Some factors influenced students’ difficulties in comprehending recount text were material that has long passage, limitation of words, learners’ background, and environment.

Abstract

This study focuses on students' errors that occur when asked to write simple present tense to non-English English study program students at a private university in the border area of West Kalimantan. Researchers conducted this research to get an overview of the causes of students making mistakes and errors in writing simple present tense.In analyzing the data, the researchers used qualitative research design to describe the various forms of errors or mistakes students when writing simple present tense. The data analysis in this study was taken from 120 Non-English Study program students.The researchers applied purposive sampling to determine the research subject.Based on the number of sampling of the research, the researchers analyzed 120 worksheets of the students translation task.Researchers found a total of 395 cases. The findings showed that all cases described in this study were categorized as errors. The researchers found that students failed to carry out their knowledge of the simple present tense.The most common errors found in this study, such as the rule of adding extra 's / es', the rule of using 'Tobe' and errors arising from the addition of 'Ving' can be minimized with regular writing practice. Keywords : Errors, Mistakes, Students  writing Products

Abstract

Learning models only emphasize rote thinking, reproductive and looking for the right answer. Many English teachers only emphasize the theoretical aspects, not the actual function, communication skills. This study aims to determine the effect of active learning model learning with Youtube media versus flash card media and students' learning motivation towards student learning outcomes in SMP N 1 Sidoarjo and SMP N 4 Sidoarjo. The study was conducted with a quantitative approach with a factorial design experimental model. The results showed learning outcomes between learning English using active learning models with Youtube media and learning English with flash card media.

Abstract

Abstract: The research’s purpose is to perceive the implication of reading technique use and self-belief  to reading comprehension. This research is conducted to answer the problem do reading technique and self-belief fundamentally implication to college students’ reading comprehension. The problem was answered using alternative hypothesis stating reading technique and self-belief significantly implicate to college students’ reading comprehension. The reasearch used quantitative and research design is correlation. The subject of the reserach was 240 population students of English Education Department of Universitas Islam Madura Pamekasan. The sample was 150 students after being counted by Sloven theory. The sample was taken using simple random sampling with lottery media. The data was taken using questionnaire for reading technique which consisted of 30 points questions to know the frequency of reading technique use, questiannaire for self-belief which consisted of 9 questions for regulated learning and the answers scored using Likert Scale, the reading comprehension test consisted 40 questions were picked up from Longman Pre TOEFL reading test. The data were analyzed using regression formula to answer the reserach problem. Data analysis was counted using SPSS version 11.0. The result showed that reading technique and self-belief fundamentally implicate to the college students’ reading comprehension. It was authenticated by table of regression showing that the value of F is 14.339 (p<0.01). It meant that the data reject nul hypothesis and receive alternative hypothesis. It is substantiated reading technique and self-belief fundamentally to reading comprehension of students university.
