Abstract

Elaborating Critical Thinking Skills in TEFL Methodology subject has become one of the 21st century trends, prioritized in the pedagogic process of language courses. Lecturers as facilitators, motivators, boosters, co-learners and inspirational model are the foundation of innovative creativity to adapt and modify comprehensively, and integrate them in their teaching projects contextually; while, the learners themselves play as the active target of learning agents. This modern TEFL Methodology critically makes use of either authentic texts or real texts that are also confronted by the need to approach texts critically. This was revealed in this research, focused on the learners’ activities that enthusiastically engage critical thinking skills in their learning process. It runs actively, innovatively, creatively, dialogically, democratically and in a critical and interactive atmosphere. The importance of applying critical thinking skills in language learning process can empower learners to maximize the objective of TEFL Methodology learning target both oral and written in accordance with their social context. Learners enter in any task using the target language which contains the elements such as identification, investigation, analysis and problem solving then they must think critically. These kinds of communicative task are commonplace for they engage the learners in authentic communication settings. This is impressive and meaningful for the learners. Thus, recommending success in TEFL Methodology subject – as in life - requires effective use of language practically along with some measure of critical thinking.

Abstract

This paper sought to investigate the relationship/gap between personal and professional identity experienced by a group of elementary school teachers in Sintang, West Borneo. In gathering the data, the researchers used questionnaire and divided it into two parts: close-ended statements in a form of Likert Scale and open-ended questions which asked the opinion of the teachers related to their personal and professional identity. This study employed a qualitative research, using the snowball sampling. The researchers distributed the questionnaire in form of Likert scale and continued it with open-ended questions. The questionnaire was then followed up by individual interview. The questions were posited to identify teachers’ beliefs of their professional and personal identity. The research results reveal that there are five gap points between personal and professional identity within teacher, namely adjusting myself to the work place, trying to be a good parent, class situation and students’ characteristic, cannot be ‘me’ when in the classroom, and professional identity affects personal identity. Recommendations for further research studies are also provided at the end of this paper

This research aimed at improving students’ speaking ability using a short dialogue memorization technique. It was a classroom action research. The study was conducted in a cyclic process, starting from planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. It was implemented in two cycles. The subjects of this research were the elementary level students from Timothy English School, Sintang. The study found out that the implementation of the short dialogue memorization technique has improved the active involvement of the students in class. The students also improved their speaking ability well. In the first cycle, only some students participated in class actively, and most of them were very active in the second cycle. Referring to the data, more than half of the students got higher score in each aspect. Compared with Cycle 1, Cycle 2 was dominated by the students who got a score of 3 in each aspect, while Cycle 1 was dominated by the students who got score 2 and 1. Almost all students passed the criteria of success, 65. Therefore, the teachers were recommended to improve the students’ speaking ability using short dialogue memorization technique.

Abstract

Reading is often perceived as a key activity for helping students learn a new language, not only in the first language but also in the foreign language. Unfortunately, some surveys report that Indonesian people have a low reading habit. Thus, this research develops a reading book which is visually interesting, easy in level, and not too long. The research followed the extensive reading framework as it was said capable of maintaining student’s motivation in reading. This research also adopted bilingualism principles and was packed with local-related topics such as tourism destinations in Pontianak City. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model was chosen as the main methodology because it was believed as the most popular and has been used extensively in R&D research. However, due to time and word count limitations, the current paper only discusses the first three steps of the ADDIE model. Results of the research confirmed earlier reports having documented the participant’s low level of reading motivation. Such a claim was derived from data related to the reading duration and the quantity of books that the students read. Besides, their English competence was also lacking, so a bilingual book might be preferred. The students also revealed that they barely found an English language book containing local culture information. This information then became a starting point for the researcher in designing the reading book. The information allowed the researcher to determine the book content, the vocabulary levels, the length, and its visual appearance.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, teaching and learning activities have changed dramatically. Within the Indonesian context, for example, beginning March 2020, the Indonesian government applied a social distancing policy. The situation forced both students and teachers to study and teach from home as the schools were closed to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. This included how pre-service teachers learnt to teach. Intended to explore pre-service English teachers’ experiences related to their teaching practicum in this pandemic time, this paper focuses on gaining in-depth information related to how the research participants view their experiences during a microteaching class at an Indonesian university. The study involved six pre-service teachers who took the microteaching class. The main data were collected from pre-service teachers through written reflection and from an open-ended questionnaire. In addition, recorded videos of participants’ teaching practices were also used to triangulate the data. Data analysis was qualitatively to see the emerging themes. The findings indicates that teacher candidates in the study view their microteaching experiences as both positive and negative ways. They consider it as a positive experience as they could have high confidence in teaching. It is a negative experience because they did not have experience managingthe  classroom. Despite their mixed experiences, the participants in the study still consider their teaching practice experiences to be useful in preparing their teaching practicum at schools.

Abstract

Presentations that consist of many sentences, causing students to be unable to develop their use of language. They prefer to read rather than to explain the material by using their own words. This will affect the students' speaking skills. Therefore, this study discusses the students' language used in a presentation by using mind mapping. By using a mind mapping strategy, students are not able to write down all the sentences they present. They only write down the important points of the material so they have to try to make their sentences to explain their material. This research was conducted in two cycles. The data obtained were analyzed based on the theory of surface strategy taxonomy and it was explained descriptively qualitatively. The results showed that the grammatical errors made by students in their presentations using the mind mapping strategy were in the category of omission, addition, misformation and misordering. Keywords: Mind mapping; speaking skill; surface strategy taxonomy
