Abstract

This article aims to delineate the weakness of Osman Bakr's notions who claims that al-Ghazali regarded Aristotle to have tawhidic belief. This opinion may lead to different views because it leads to confusion concerning this great figure of ×ujjat al-Islâm. In al-Ghazali’s various works, the author does not find such a claim. He merely classified the philosophers with their backgrounds, without showing any belief of their monotheistic principles. In addition, the author also refutes Osman's opinion, which says that if a Muslim recognizes Confucius's prophethood, he will not contradict to any Islamic teachings. This opinion seems to invite readers to acknowledge his prophethood even as a Muslim intellectual. These two figures are often the objects of study by number of researchers in the fields of philosophy and religion. However, a Muslim scholar must be able to place them according to their role and contribution critically and carefully. The author concludes that the above-mentioned claims are baseless and inaccurate arguments, so they deserve to be rejected. Number of works by those two figures do not show the arguments of the claim. In this article, the author applies the analytical text and descriptive analysis method by analysing the main sources that are relevant to the context of the issue.

Abstract

Ahmad Amin is renown for his reformist ideas. His thought covers a wide range of issues. Nonetheless, little has been done to study his perspective on Sufism. This paper is aimed at filling that gap. As a historian, sociologist and philosopher, Amin has many to offer concerning how Sufism should be treated. The paper argues that like many reformists, Amin is reluctant to accept certain –notably philosophical- aspects of Sufism and regard them as baseless, useless and ahistorical. These should be abandoned as they serve nothing for the Muslim community. His intellectual project is designed to dirent Sufism as a moral –that is Ghazalian- system. But he at the same time also proposes –like Ibn Khaldun- that Sufism should be treated as a means of realising commong good (maslahah) instead of acquiring personal sanctity (karamah). Hence, his critique of Sufism is based on the synthesis between Ghazalian form of paradigm with that of Khaldunian system of thought. While Amin has not paid enough attention to Sufism in his studies, deeper look at his world-view reveals that his interest to this spiritual dimension of Islam is unrivalled

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has hampered the process of character building and has an impact on the moral decadence of students in schools. The lack of monitoring of the competence of educators in the online system causes a decrease in the character of students. This is due to the lack of exemplary in thinking, ethics, speaking, and acting obtained by students. It is important to instill character education in students so that they have characters based on religious values such as in Islamic boarding schools. This research aims to examine the existence of Islamic boarding schools in implementing character education in the pandemic era with the object Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor (PMDG) for Girls 1 Mantingan Ngawi, East Java. This research is a literature study with the type of research is qualitatively, while the method is descriptive analytic. The results show that PMDG for Girls 1 is able to show its existence in implementing character education even in the pandemic era. This can be seen from the effectiveness of the dormitory system that can support face-to-face learning as an effort to internalize character education in Islamic boarding schools. This can be achieved by applying the discipline health protocol in the Pesantren environment before starting face-to-face learning. In addition, it is also supported by various Pesantren disciplines such as prohibiting students from leaving campus except in very emergency conditions and accompanied by special officers.

Abstract

Madrasah education has become a major concern for Singapore government due to the characteristic of Singapore as a secular, modern and pluralist state, coupled with the government’s deep-seated anxiety whether the Islamic school graduates can contribute to national economy and integrate into national cohesion. This article aims at exploring the challenges and reform of madrasah education within the secular, modern and multicultural state. Collecting data from official documents and websites, literature review, and interviews, this study is qualitative in which some data and relevant literatures have been presented and analyzed. It finds that madrasah education has constantly been perceived in a negative nuance due to its ineffective contribution to the knowledge-based economy. The orthodox and conservative education system in the Islamic institution of education is also viewed to hinder Singapore’s racial and religious cohesion. These then force Muslims to reform the Muslim school by changing orientation, revamping the system, improving quality, instilling national cohesion and fundraising. This study implies that reformation in Islamic education would be successful by innovatively negotiating the pressures that national politics and rule present and appealing to the identity and aspiration of local society.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the use of the ma'na-yi harfi ‎(Indicative Meaning) and ma'na-yi ismi ‎(Nominal Meaning)‎ concept of ‎Badiuzzaman Said Nursi in preventing hoaxes caused by new media abuse. The approach offered ‎by Nursi is important because it can be considered as the basis of Islamic media communication ‎in which moral values in media are prioritized over only material aspects. New media ‎characterized by openness and freedom, in a certain condition, enable the hoax to spread. Hoax ‎often occurs because the media does not prioritize morality values but leads to materially self and ‎group fulfillment. Using the qualitative method with library data in the form of Said Nursi's ‎Risale-i Nûr, we explore Nursi's views related to ma'na-yi ismi and ma'na-yi harfi in the media ‎field. We then use his view as a basis for analyzing media hoaxes. The result is that the ma’na-yi ‎ismi perspective tends to be a worldly material orientation in which communication phenomena, ‎such as events, news, and information themselves, are understood based on the visible social ‎contexts where media practitioners are working and oriented to fulfill self-desires. Meanwhile, in ‎the ma'na-yi harfi perspective, the communication phenomenon is interpreted, constructed, and ‎displayed with self-consideration (individual or collective self), but it is built in the full ‎awareness that phenomena belong to the absolute Ruler (God), and humans as the giver of ‎meaning to those phenomena must translate the greatness of God in them. The phenomenon of ‎communication is considered a part of the greatness of God in the universe so the hoaxes and ‎negative messages can be avoided. The ma’na-yi harfi perspective can be considered as a solution ‎to solve the social problems of hoaxes.

Abstract

Lately, pesantren are faced with negative stigmas that are associated as the central understanding of fundamental Islam and become the root for the emergence of radical movements in the name of Islam. This radicalism movement is considered less in line with the moderate Islamic ideology of the archipelago. So that the existence of the pesantren seems to be "the accused". This article aims to show that pesantren as the center of the radicalism movement is not entirely correct. Through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the caregivers of the Assalaam Modern Islamic Boarding School (PPMI) and literature study. This paper ultimately shows that the Assalaam Modern Islamic Boarding School is one of the pesantren with a democratic pattern of parenting in the teaching aspect, strict (authoritarian) on the reward aspect, and uses a persuasive approach in the persuasion process. Until now, the phenomenon of religious radicalism in the Islamic Modern Islamic Boarding School in Assalaam has not been found, because the implementation of democratic parenting is still effective. Also, the teaching of monotheism and morals which is accompanied by strict supervision among the santri actually acts as a "vaccine" for religious radicalism itself. Especially with the busy pattern of the students in various activities, both intra and extra-curricular, the space for the spread of radicalism is increasingly narrowing.

Abstract

After the peaceful agreement signed by the Indonesian government with the government of Aceh, special autonomy was granted for Aceh and provided additional space for the two governments to improve the relations. Islamic law was fully effected after the assignment of Law No. 22 of 1999 concerning Regional Autonomy and amended by Law No. 11 of 2006 concerning the Law of the Government of Aceh, which provides a legal basis for the Privileges and Application of Islamic Law in Aceh. This research aims at analyzing the history and current existence of Islamic law in Indonesia and its contradiction with human rights. As an effort to enforce Sharia law, the regional government, besides pouring it into regional regulations or what is called Qanun, also forms institutions tasked with ensuring the proper implementation of Islamic Sharia law in Aceh. The research used normative legal research with a statute approach. The data are taken from secondary data. The results found that there were no human rights violations in applying Islamic law in Aceh.
